The technique, cryogenic condensation, uses the low-temperature and refrigeration properties of liquid nitrogen to condense out gaseous VOCs from vent streams before they can escape into the atmosphere. This pollution control technology helps companies meet emission standards by achieving nearly 100 percent solvent recovery while also bringing operational advantages to their production processes.

Air Products’ Oscar Beteta, cryogenic applications engineer, will explain how liquid nitrogen has helped companies control emissions of VOCs for well over 30 years. The webinar will cover the principle of condensation, which is the driving mechanism for controlling this process; how liquid nitrogen is incorporated into the condensation process; and the benefits and challenges of using this technique.

In addition, Beteta will introduce Air Products’ proprietary Cryo-Condap® technology for recovering solvents, which essentially employs an indirect method of heat transfer using a buffering fluid to optimize temperature control and avoid freezing issues. Working in collaboration with Herco Kühltechnik GmbH, a German company specializing in cryogenic refrigeration equipment, the company has developed sizing and modeling software for the complex analysis needed to custom-design systems that minimize nitrogen consumption and maximize energy efficiency. Over the last 25 years, Air Products’ Cryo-Condap technology has been applied across a diverse range of industries with more than 150 systems installed worldwide.

To join the free webinar, “Controlling VOC Emissions with Liquid Nitrogen,” on February 4 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. (EST), register at www.airproducts.com/VOCwebinar. Air Products has 13 liquid CO2 production plants in the U.S., and had recently announced another planned liquid CO2 agreement and facility with 400 tpd of production in Iowa. In June, Air Products expanded its portfolio of industrial gases offerings in North America by acquiring EPCO Carbon Dioxide Products, Inc. of Monroe, Louisiana. The acquisition immediately vaulted Air Products to a position amongst the leaders in the North American liquid CO2 market and also made Air Products a more fully-integrated supplier of bulk industrial gases by increasing its competitive offering.

Liquid CO2, which Air Products already offers in its other geographic regions around the world, is an important product in markets Air Products currently serves with other merchant industrial gases including for food, beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, oilfield services, and metals fabrication applications.
The acquisition also includes Louisiana Leasing, Ltd. of Illinois, an affiliated company that owns liquid CO2 distribution assets that are solely leased to EPCO, and immediately vaults Air Products to a position amongst the leaders in the North American liquid CO2 market. The purchase price is not being disclosed.

“This acquisition is a good fit with our North American Merchant Gases set of core competencies. It also gives us immediate scale in a market that will allow us to capture additional sales of existing products by being able to offer an expanded product portfolio to existing and new customer accounts,” said Nelson Squires, vice president and general manager – North America Merchant Gases at Air Products. “We are pleased to be acquiring a company that demonstrated continued growth through the economic challenges of the past several years. EPCO’s geographic footprint overlaps nicely with our existing infrastructure such that we expect both cost and revenue synergy benefits.”

With this acquisition, Air Products adds liquid CO2 to its North American offerings through EPCO’s 12 CO2 purification and liquefaction plants located predominantly in the central portion of the United States. Liquid CO2, which Air Products already offers in its other geographic regions around the world, is an important product in markets Air Products currently serves with other merchant industrial gases including the Food, Beverage, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Oil Field Services, and Metals Fabrication markets.

“Not only does this acquisition make Air Products a fully-integrated supplier of bulk industrial process gases, but a combined offering of liquid nitrogen and liquid CO2 is expected to strengthen our sales of liquid nitrogen in markets we already serve. Simply put, it increases our competitive offering with customers who require a broader portfolio of gases,” said Squires.

EPCO, established in 1987, had revenues of approximately $60 million in 2012 and was the largest North American independent liquid CO2 company. With approximately 170 employees, EPCO focused on the production and distribution of liquid CO2 for the Food and Beverage, Oil Field Services, and Chemicals markets.

A propos d’Air Products
The Air Products Gas Converter is available for free download from global Apple® iTunes® Stores for use on iPhone®, iPad®, and iPod® touch devices. The new app enables users to quickly convert weight and volume measures for industrial gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, argon, hydrogen, helium, and carbon dioxide, as well as LNG/methane.

“Air Products developed the new app as a value-added tool for anyone who frequently uses units of measure that differ from those used by the industrial gas industry, giving them the ability to convert from one unit of measure to another, especially weights and volumes,” said Steve Ruoff, Metals Processing industry manager at Air Products. “We wanted a convenient tool that takes advantage of the digital technology everyone is using today and can be built upon in the future.”

When converting between liquid and gaseous units, the Gas Converter accounts for the unique properties of each industrial gas, particularly molecular weight and density. For LNG, the tool converts flow rates—including Diesel Gallon Equivalents—and allows the user to specify values for a number of variables.

In the past, Air Products has provided printed weight/volume conversion charts on business cards and currently provides interactive conversion tools on the company’s website. With the addition of the Gas Converter mobile app, users can quickly and easily access the tool anytime, anywhere.

Up to 10% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid and bulk hydrogen and liquid carbon dioxide

Up to 20% for liquid argon and bulk carbon monoxide

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

The global helium supply shortfall has caused us to address each customer price change on an individual basis.

The revised prices will offset higher operating costs and increased input costs. Air Products is taking aggressive actions internally to mitigate rising costs by reinvesting to improve efficiencies and maintain reliable supply.
This was just one of the messages delivered by Air Products’ (NYSE: APD) PRISM Membrane Group director of operations and technology Charlie Page in his opening session keynote speech today at the 22nd Annual North American Membrane Society (NAMS) Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“Membranes as a technology have been known for a long time, but their use as a commercial product in gas separations has only been fairly recent. Developments in polymer sciences dating back many years led to discoveries of synthetic materials mimicking natural membranes that were capable of performing interesting industrial separations,” Page told the audience.

Page delivered a retrospective synopsis of the evolution of the commercialization of membrane technology into the industrial sector in his address. With 30 years experience, he began work in this area much earlier and joined Air Products’ membrane business via a 1991 technology acquisition. Page continued as global membrane product owner before assuming commercial responsibility for Air Products’ PRISM Membranes Group in 2000 and became program director in 2008.

Page said he was honored to give the keynote address. “This type of opportunity is a real honor when you consider the long list of distinguished membrane experts who have given keynote talks in the past,” he said.

In looking both back to the past and ahead to the future of membrane technology, Page noted that Air Products has spent many years working with aerospace and transportation industries in making the transport of people and materials safer for the world. “Perhaps our most important market segment in today’s business is in aerospace, specifically OBIGGS (On Board Inert Gas Generating System). Inerting of fuel tanks for the prevention of fire and explosions has taken a long time to develop. Today, we supply membranes for both military and commercial passenger aircraft. Almost all new production aircraft are being equipped with membranes. OBIGGS will be a key market for many applications for many years requiring large numbers of high performance membranes,” Page said.

He added that it is not just planes, but also trains that Air Products has played a role with safe travel. “In fact, Air Products membranes have even provided oxygen enriched air that is used on high altitude trains in Tibet to partially offset the decreased cabin pressure and ensure passenger safety,” he said.

In looking forward, Page also noted that Air Products’ development of ceramic membranes for oxygen production, with much support from the United States Department of Energy, is a potential game changing enabler for clean energy production. “We need to keep finding new technologies that will address the pressing needs of a world with increasingly depleted resources,” he said.

With more than 500 of the large process gas systems installed, and over 100 thousand nitrogen and air dehydration membranes shipped to customers across many applications, Page said he takes great pride in the reliable and long-term stable performance these units have displayed. “By long term, we mean years, not hours or days. We are also quite proud that we have maintained a ’green’ factory with respect to our environmental impact,” he said.

Air Products is the worldwide leader in production of gas separation and purification membranes. Membrane technology is used to separate and purify gases. Membrane modules contain thousands of hollow fibers to provide high processing capacity in a compact unit. Membranes are often used to produce nitrogen from compressed air; for hydrogen recovery and purification; for ratio adjustment to balance a mix of gases; air and gas dehydration to remove water, which can impact compressed gas performance; and natural gas treatment for removal of impurities.

Nitrogen membrane demand is driven by product needs from the chemical production, food processing, liquefied natural gas, oil and gas, transportation, and mining industries. Hydrogen membranes are used in chemical, refining, and biofuels processes. Dehydration membranes are used in compressed air systems and for high pressure requirements such as natural gas dehydration. Air Products' PRISM® membranes have been used to produce gases to inert fuel tanks aboard aircraft; for use in coal mine methane recovery operations in China; to enrich oxygen for passengers on the world's longest and highest highland railway, the Qinghai-Tibet railway; and to produce nitrogen for blanketing chemical, methanol, and liquefied gas shipments around the globe.

Air Products' PRISM® line of gas generation systems supplied generated nitrogen and oxygen to more than 1,500 customers in over 30 countries worldwide. More information on PRISM(R) membrane systems can be found at www.airproducts.com/membranes.

Air Products (NYSE:APD) provides atmospheric, process and specialty gases; performance materials; equipment; and technology.

A propos d’Air Products :

This flexible grinding system can generate consistent yields of particles between 45 and 250 microns (60 and 325 mesh), and in some cases as small as 10 microns. Now available globally in a range of sizes to match individual customer needs, the mill is ideal for cryogenic size reduction of a wide range of materials, including pigments, plastics, powder coatings, thermoplastic elastomers, waxes, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, spices and other food products.

“The PolarFit ultra-fine-grinding mill offers advanced technology to manufacturers who now may be able to grind product to finer particle sizes, with more uniform particle distribution and higher yields in their target range, than they could before with conventional grinding systems,” said Kimberly King, principal industry engineer for North America Merchant Gases at Air Products. “This can open up opportunities for new applications in a variety of markets.”

Air Products’ ultra-fine-grinding mill uses a combination of size reduction mechanisms, including impact, attrition and particle-particle collision, to achieve much smaller particle sizes than other mills. The mill has an easily adjustable grinding gap, which allows the production of particle sizes from ultra-fine to coarse, eliminating the need for other types of grinding equipment. Through its efficient use of liquid nitrogen, the Air Products mill can produce ultra-fine particle sizes, more uniform particle distribution and higher yields of particles in target range; improve product quality due to minimal or no heat damage; reduce waste and recycling; and lower production costs.

“Air Products’ ultra-fine-grinding mill uses the cooling power of liquid nitrogen to remove heat produced in the grinding process by controlling the temperature of the product or mill,” explained King. “The mill’s higher efficiency helps customers achieve a lower nitrogen-to-product ratio than can be achieved with other mills, further reducing their operating costs.”

Air Products has over 40 years of experience in applying cryogenics to grinding applications. The company provides ongoing technical support from its experienced staff and a reliable gas supply in a variety of modes to meet each customer’s requirements. With state-of-the-art trial facilities in Asia, Europe and the United States, Air Products can test a customer’s product to help them determine the feasibility and benefits of using the ultra-fine-grinding mill.

Media Contacts:
Theo Snijders
Wisse Kommunikatie
Tel: +31 26 443 1523
Email: theo.snijders@wisse-worldcom.nl

Expertenportal rund um technische Gase - Air Products startet Info-Kampagne „Understanding your business“

DAir Products hat die europaweite Kommunikationskampagne „Understanding your business“ („Wir verstehen Ihr Geschäft“) gestartet.

A propos d’Air Products :

A propos d’Air Products :

A propos d’Air Products :
Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced plans to build a new world-scale air separation unit (ASU) at its La Porte, Texas industrial gases facility. The energy efficient ASU will replace older assets at the site and provide benefits to customers through higher-reliability pipeline oxygen and nitrogen supply, and enhanced production of merchant and electronics products including argon and xenon. The new ASU is to be on-stream in October 2011.

“This world-scale ASU at La Porte will serve customers across Air Products’ three major business areas of Tonnage Gases, Merchant Gases and Electronics and increase supply security and reliability. It will deliver significant productivity gains through decreased energy consumption and operating costs and supports the company’s sustainability goals,” said Stephen Jones, senior vice president and general manager–Tonnage Gases, Equipment and Energy at Air Products.

The new La Porte ASU will ensure the long-term operational viability and customer supply security of one of Air Products’ key liquid argon sources for the North American market. Argon is used primarily for welding, electronics, steel and metals processing applications. The plant also will expand Air Products’ xenon production capacity and improve customer supply security and reliability. Xenon continues to grow as a key material used in the etching steps of semiconductor manufacturing, and the additional volume will support growth in the emerging technologies of plasma display and other lighting applications which depend on xenon’s special properties.

The La Porte ASU is part of Air Products’ extensive Gulf Coast network of industrial gas facilities, pipelines and distribution assets. In addition to its oxygen, nitrogen and argon businesses, Air Products has the leading hydrogen position in the region comprised of numerous production facilities and over 450 miles of pipelines reaching from the Houston Ship Channel in Texas to Lake Charles, Louisiana, and from the city of Plaquemine, Louisiana to Chalmette, east of New Orleans.

Air Products (NYSE:APD) serves customers in industrial, energy, technology and healthcare markets worldwide with a unique portfolio of atmospheric gases, process and specialty gases, performance materials, and equipment and services. Founded in 1940, Air Products has built leading positions in key growth markets such as semiconductor materials, refinery hydrogen, home healthcare services, natural gas liquefaction, and advanced coatings and adhesives. The company is recognized for its innovative culture, operational excellence and commitment to safety and the environment.
Effective October 1, 2009, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE:APD) will increase pricing and monthly service charges as follows for merchant customers in North America for the following products:

liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid argon, liquid and bulk hydrogen by 4% to 8%; and

liquid and bulk helium by 5% to 10%.

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

This pricing initiative is in response to higher operating costs related to running plants with significantly lower product demand, in addition to both higher energy costs and overall increases associated with the production and distribution of merchant gas products.

NOTE: This release may contain forward-looking statements.

Today, Air Products announced that it is capitalizing on its recent investment in Eastern Europe with several announcements in the region.

Air Products has signed a contract with Alcoa, in Russia, to supply nitrogen to Alcoa’s aluminum plant in Samara. As part of the agreement, Air Products will install two high purity nitrogen generators, and will take over the existing generator on the site. The new generators will be on-stream in 2009.

Russia is an important growth market for Air Products, where the company is involved in projects in the Moscow region and now in the Samara region.

As the largest supplier of technical and industrial gases in Poland, Air Products is further strengthening its leadership position in the Polish market with the announcement today that it will build a state-of-the-art cylinder filling depot in Warsaw, Poland. The construction is due to start in 2009 and the depot is due to be operational in 2010. The depot will use the latest technology to fill over 3,000 cylinders per day at a pressure of 200 bar, which is the standard cylinder pressure currently used in Poland. A 200 bar cylinder holds a greater quantity of gas than 150 bar cylinders, which translates into cost reduction for the users, as less frequent fillings are needed, and in turn reduces transport and storage costs.

The depot will be equipped to fill cylinders with all types of medical gases, technical gases, including argon, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and mixtures, and Linx™ gases, the most technically-advanced range of welding gases available in Poland, as well as modified atmospheric packaging (MAP) gases for the food industry.

This is the second technical gas filling depot to be built by Air Products in Poland, following the opening of the depot in Kędzierzyn-Koźle in 2005.

In Slovakia, Air Products’ new high purity hydrogen plant, in Novaky, is now on-stream. The plant will bring on additional hydrogen capacity to customers in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary. It complements the company’s existing facility in Litvinov, Czech Republic, and will support key industries such as glass, metals and food.

Erwin Zwicky, President Air Products Europe, said: “Central and Eastern Europe is a key region for us, as it is showing an impressive growth rate. The investments we are making show our determination to build on the successful acquisition of BOC Gazy we made in 2007, which positions us as the number one industrial gas provider in Poland. Our presence in Central Europe is growing, and we now operate two hydrogen plants in the region – in Litvinov, Czech Republic and Novaky, Slovakia, allowing us to serve customers across the entire region.”

Společnost Air Products (NYSE: ADP) dodává svým zákazníkům z oblasti průmyslu, energetiky a zdravotnictví širokou paletu výrobků a služeb, především technické, procesní a speciální plyny, chemikálie a související technologická zařízení.

Nejvýznamnější zákazníci společnosti Air Products jsou z oboru strojírenství (svařování a tepelné dělení kovů), metalurgie (tavení a tepelné zpracování kovů), sklářského a petrochemického průmyslu, gumárenství, potravinářství, výroby a distribuce nápojů, zdravotnictví, analytických laboratoří a elektronického průmyslu. O brat společnosti Air Products v České a Slovenské republice (obě země tvoří společnou obchodní jednotku) dosáhl v loňském roce 1,5 miliardy CZK.

With its assurance of ultra-high purity, this premium hydrogen gas product will have applications in a wide range of industries – in particular, it will improve analytical accuracy and offer lower levels of detection in laboratory applications for the environmental management, pharmaceutical and petrochemical sectors.

Gary Yates, Air Products’ European Product Manager Analytical and Laboratories, said:
“This is the purest hydrogen gas product currently available in the UK – containing less than 20 ppb of water, less than 100 ppb of oxygen and less than 10 ppb of total hydrocarbons making it perfect for analytical applications.”

BIP® technology was originally developed by Air Products in 1993 and since then has been successfully used to supply pure helium, nitrogen and argon. The technology encompasses an internal purifier and patented valve design to deliver ultra-high purity gas to the user. The main benefits of the technology include improved analytical accuracy, lower levels of detection and enhanced cost efficiency, due to extended column life and the added convenience of not having to use separate purifiers at the point of use. These benefits are now being extended to hydrogen BIP® cylinders for the first time.

For companies involved in environmental emissions control, for example, the new hydrogen BIP® cylinders can be used as a carrier gas in gas chromatography, where it is especially important that critical impurities are kept as low as possible to ensure that industrial processes stay within specified emissions limits. Where Flame Ionisation Detectors (FID) are used, the ultra-high purity hydrogen BIP® will bring further performance benefits such as reduced baseline noise and improved accuracy.

Gary Yates concluded:
“For those involved in the most critical analytical applications, it is reassuring to know that this is the purest hydrogen available, delivering improved accuracy and the lowest possible limits of detection.”

The new hydrogen BIP® gases are part of Air Products’ Experis range of specialty gases and gas handling equipment and they have been endorsed by the Research Institute of Chromatography in Belgium.
