Air Products inaugure un centre d’essais dernier cri en Allemagne et établit ainsi de nouveaux standards en matière de cryo-broyage

Air Products, producteur de gaz industriels et leader reconnu en cryo-broyage, est fier d’annoncer l’ouverture en Allemagne d’un centre d’essais et de démonstration à la pointe de la technologie, équipé de son tout nouveau cryo-broyeur ultra fin PolarFit™.

Des démonstrations à échelle industrielle du procédé de cryo-broyage permettent aux visiteurs de constater de visu les bénéfices d’une telle technologie. Le site est également doté de tous les moyens d’analyses nécessaires et d’un classificateur pneumatique qui atteste de la capacité du broyeur à offrir une distribution précise des tailles de particules.

Le cryo-broyage consiste à broyer à froid des matériaux en employant de l’azote liquide. Ses atouts sont de mieux en mieux connus des industriels de la chimie, de la pharmacie et de l’agro- alimentaire chez qui l’on observe une demande croissante pour une granulométrie fine aussi bien que pour des broyeurs offrant le plus fort rendement possible pour le coût le plus bas.

Le cryo-broyeur ultra fin PolarFit™ d’Air Products installé sur le site de Bobingen permet de produire une poudre homogène de grande qualité en combinant différentes techniques de broyage telles que l’impact, l’attrition et la collision particule contre particule. Les matériaux difficiles à broyer comme les élastomères thermosplastiques, peuvent désormais l’être à des granulométries plus fines que cela n’était possible jusqu’ici avec un équipement classique. Le broyeur produit avec régularité des grains mesurant entre 45 et 250 microns (ou entre 60 et 325 US mesh), et même dans certains cas inférieurs à 10 microns. La distance rotor-stator du broyeur, facile à ajuster, offre une grande flexibilité dans le choix de la taille des particules, pour une granulométrie fine à ultra-fine. Un usage judicieux de l’azote liquide permet de contrer la chaleur engendrée par le processus de broyage et de préserver la qualité du produit en minimisant, voire supprimant les dommages thermiques. Les clients peuvent ainsi optimiser leurs taux de production tout en réduisant leurs coûts opérationnels.

L’expérience d’Air Products dans le broyage fin s’étend aussi au domaine de la classification pneumatique. La capacité à classer des matériaux cryo-broyés constitue un atout supplémentaire pour des sociétés qui cherchent à obtenir une distribution granulométrique précise pour leur produit. Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective, October 1, 2011, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly service charges for merchant customers in North America. The pricing adjustments include increases of:

– 5 to 10% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid argon, liquid and bulk hydrogen; and;

– 3 to 5% for monthly service charges.

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

The revised prices will offset higher operating costs and increased input costs. Air Products is taking aggressive actions internally to mitigate rising costs by reinvesting to improve efficiencies and maintain reliable supply.

Der Industriegasehersteller Air Products eröffnet als anerkannter Marktführer bei Kaltvermahlungen eine hochmoderne Test- und Versuchsanlage für kryogene Vermahlung für den europäischen Markt. Im Herzen der Testanlage in Bobingen steht die neu entwickelte PolarFit™ Mühle für extra feines Vermahlen.

Der Vorteil der Anlage für Testvermahlungen ist, dass Kunden aus erster Hand den Nutzen der kryogenen Vermahlung erfahren. Multitalent PolarFit™ Mühle

Die PolarFit™ Mühle von Air Products liefert dank einer Kombination von Zerkleinerungsverfahren wie Aufprall, Abrieb und Teilchen-Teilchen-Kollision eine gleichbleibend hohe Produktqualität. Schwer zu vermahlende Materialien, wie thermoplastische Elastomere, können in kleinere Partikelgrößen zerkleinert werden, als es bisher mit herkömmlichen Mühlen möglich war. Mit dieser Mühle lassen sich gleichmäßige Korngrößen von 45 bis 240 Mikrometer und in einigen Fällen sogar Partikelgrößen von gerade einmal zehn Mikrometer erzielen. Der einfach einstellbare Mahlspalt bietet zudem Flexibilität bei der Wahl der Partikelgröße von grob bis extrem fein. Durch den effizienten Einsatz von Flüssigstickstoff wird die entstehende Wärme aus dem Mahlvorgang entfernt. Dies verhindert oder reduziert Hitzeschäden, was die Produktqualität optimiert. Mit diesem Verfahren können Kunden die Produktionsraten maximieren und gleichzeitig die operativen Gesamtkosten minimieren.

Dank Air Products’ Erfahrung in der Feinvermahlung wird zudem der Bereich des Trennverfahrens erweitert. Air Products Introduces New PolarFit™
Ultra-Fine-Grinding Mill at PTX Canada

Air Products (NYSE:APD), a recognized leader in cryogenic grinding, will introduce its new PolarFit™ ultra-fine-grinding mill at PTX Canada in Toronto from June 21-23.

Air Products’ new PolarFit ultra-fine-grinding mill provides a cost-effective way to reduce hard-to-grind materials to smaller particle sizes than can be achieved with conventional impact mills. This flexible grinding system can generate consistent yields of particles between 45 and 250 microns (60 and 325 mesh), and in some cases as small as 10 microns. Now available globally in a range of sizes to match individual customer needs, the mill is ideal for cryogenic size reduction of a wide range of materials, including pigments, plastics, powder coatings, thermoplastic elastomers, waxes, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, spices and other food products.

“The PolarFit ultra-fine-grinding mill offers advanced technology to manufacturers who now may be able to grind product to finer particle sizes, with more uniform particle distribution and higher yields in their target range, than they could before with conventional grinding systems,” said Kimberly King, principal industry engineer for North America Merchant Gases at Air Products. “This can open up opportunities for new applications in a variety of markets.”

Air Products’ ultra-fine-grinding mill uses a combination of size reduction mechanisms, including impact, attrition and particle-particle collision, to achieve much smaller particle sizes than other mills. The mill has an easily adjustable grinding gap, which allows the production of particle sizes from ultra-fine to coarse, eliminating the need for other types of grinding equipment. Through its efficient use of liquid nitrogen, the Air Products mill can produce ultra-fine particle sizes, more uniform particle distribution and higher yields of particles in target range; improve product quality due to minimal or no heat damage; reduce waste and recycling; and lower production costs.

Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective October 1, 2010, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly service charges for merchant customers in North America as follows:

4-8% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid argon, liquid and bulk hydrogen;
5-10% for liquid and bulk helium; and
3-5% for monthly service charges.

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

The revised prices will offset higher operating costs and increased input costs. We are taking aggressive actions internally to mitigate rising costs by reinvesting to improve efficiencies and maintain reliable supply.

Helium is severely impacted by the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) cost increase for crude helium announced last month.

Air Products breidt range Pharma grade gassen uit met CO2

Air Products, leverancier van gassen en chemicaliën voor diverse markten, heeft haar range van Pharma Grade gassen uitgebreid met kooldioxide (CO2). De Pharma grade gassen zijn gassen van zeer hoge zuiverheid en kwaliteit voor de toepassing in de farmaceutische, cosmetische en veterinaire industrie. Kooldioxide wordt in deze bedrijfstakken vooral gebruikt om de groei van culturen te stimuleren en voor superkritische extracties en chemische synthese. In dezelfde range zijn ook stikstof en zuurstof leverbaar. Alle gassen in de Pharma Grade range zijn leverbaar in 50 liter cilinders en in cilinderpakketten met twaalf 50 liter cilinders.

Net als de andere Pharma Grade gassen wordt de CO2 geproduceerd en geanalyseerd volgens de GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) deel II, zodat ze volledig voldoen aan de specificaties zoals vastgelegd in de Europese Farmacopee. Het productieproces is samen met het analytische systeem volledig gevalideerd. De Pharma grade gassen voldoen trouwens ook aan de zuiverheidseisen van de Amerikaanse en Japanse Farmacopees.

De complete traceerbaarheid van de producten tot aan de grondstoffen toe, wordt gegarandeerd door een uniek identificatienummer voor elke cilinder en een daaraan gekoppeld analysecertificaat. Dit inspectie-batchnummer maakt het mogelijk om elk analysecertificaat online op te zoeken op APDirect®, de serviceportal van Air Products. Elk certificaat wordt uitgegeven en ondertekend door een gekwalificeerde medewerker van Air Products.

Net zoals de zuurstof en stikstof wordt de Pharma grade CO2 geleverd in speciale cilinders en cilinderpakketten, die zijn voorzien van een ‘residual pressure valve (RPV)’, een restdrukventiel, dat ervoor zorgt dat er geen gasresten in het systeem terugstromen. Daardoor wordt een constante, hoge kwaliteit gegarandeerd en is het risico van besmetting door externe bronnen geëlimineerd. Door de farmaceutische gassen van Air Products te gebruiken, kan de klant zijn aandacht helemaal vestigen op de optimalisatie van zijn eigen werk- en productieprocessen; in de wetenschap dat zijn gassen en apparatuur volledig aan alle wettelijke bepalingen en de hoogste kwaliteitseisen voldoen.

Air Products to Build New ASU at Granite City, Illinois

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced the signing of a new long-term oxygen and nitrogen supply agreement, and that it will build a new air separation unit (ASU) and refurbish its existing ASU and liquefier at its facility in Granite City, Illinois. The new facility, planned to be onstream in the second quarter of 2012, will provide additional capacity for meeting both on-site customer demand for gases and merchant liquid products in the region.

“Air Products has been producing industrial gases at Granite City since the 1950s. This new investment will expand our capability to serve current customers and provide significant modernization of our operations there. It represents another step in our commitment to existing customers in that area, and strengthens Air Products’ ability to supply merchant liquid products to customers in the Midwest market,” said Wilbur Mok, vice president–Tonnage Gases North America for Air Products.

The new 500-ton-per-day ASU, planned to be onstream in 2012, in combination with the existing, refurbished ASU and liquefier, will add capability to serve both the on-site customer and the merchant market. Total argon capacity for the site will also increase as a result of this project.

AIR PRODUCTS ENRICHIT SON OFFRE AVEC LE CO2 PHARMA

Air Products, présent au salon FORUM LABO & BIOTECH (stand C90), enrichit aujourd’hui sa gamme Pharma de gaz comprimés haute qualité spécialement conçue pour les industries pharmaceutiques, cosmétiques et vétérinaires en ajoutant le CO2 à l’azote -disponible depuis 2007- et à l’O2 -lancé en 2008. Ces différents gaz sont proposés en bouteilles de 50L, 20L et cadres (12x50L).

Les bénéfices de ce passage de 150 à 200 bars ? Plus de mélange gazeux dans une bouteille signifie moins de bouteilles stockées (gain de place), de manipulation (puisque que chaque bouteille dure plus longtemps) et donc de commandes comme de livraisons, réduisant du même coup les frais logistiques ainsi que l’empreinte carbone.

Non content d’économiser ainsi du temps, de l’espace et de l’argent, l’utilisateur gagne de surcroît en fiabilité ! Gasmengsels van Air Products voortaan twee keer zo lang houdbaar

Air Products, leverancier van gassen en chemicaliën voor diverse markten, heeft bekendgemaakt dat veel van zijn kalibratiemengsels voor gebruik bij analytische toepassingen voortaan twee keer zo lang houdbaar zijn. Daarmee gaat de houdbaarheid van vijf naar tien jaar. Air Products heeft met deze ontwikkeling een nieuwe norm gezet voor de Europese gasindustrie.

De verdubbeling in houdbaarheid is te danken aan de technologische ontwikkelingen op het gebied van productie en cilinderbehandeling. De voordelen spreken voor zich: langere houdbaarheid biedt extra zekerheid aan de vele gebruikers van de gassen, waartoe onder andere de farmaceutische, chemische en petrochemische industrie behoren, en laboratoria en klanten op het gebied van milieubeheer.

Veel van de gasmengsels van Air Products bevatten meer dan 100 componenten, waaronder argon, helium, kooldioxide, zuurstof, edelgassen en vele (gehalogeneerde) koolwaterstoffen. Ze worden geleverd met een analysecertificaat van Air Products, en tien jaar garantie.

Gary Yates, Air Products European Product Manager voor de analytische markt, vertelt: "Dit is een doorbraak voor de gassenindustrie. Bedrijven die heel specifieke gasmengsels gebruiken bij kalibratie of andere vormen van kwaliteitscontrole kunnen ervan op aan dat het mengsel een tiental jaren in stabiele staat blijft. Die betrouwbaarheid koesteren we."

Voorheen werd de stabiliteit van gasmengsels voor een periode van maximaal vijf jaar gegarandeerd, afhankelijk van de gebruikte componenten en hun concentratie.

Yates vervolgt: "Het is van belang dat gasmengsels niet langer worden gebruikt dan aangegeven. De kwaliteit van mengsels gaat nu eenmaal achteruit na verloop van tijd. Dat zou kunnen resulteren in onnauwkeurige kalibratie, waarop tijdrovende en kostbare herbewerking volgt. Dankzij de lange houdbaarheidsgarantie van Air Products is dubbel werk niet nodig."

Yates geeft aan dat de langere houdbaarheid met name van pas komt als bedrijven een klein volume gas verwachten te gebruiken. Hij legt uit: "Bij kalibratie van analytische toepassingen wordt maar een klein beetje gas gebruikt. Een langere houdbaarheid is daarom met name interessant voor kleine gebruikers die niet vaak kalibraties verrichten. Maar het is natuurlijk ook voor gebruikers van grotere volumes heel prettig om te weten dat hun kalibratiemengsels aanzienlijk langer goed blijven."

AIR PRODUCTS DOUBLE LA DUREE DE CONSERVATION DES MELANGES GAZEUX

Ses recherches sur les process de production des gaz et de traitement de ses bouteilles ont permis à Air Products d’établir une nouvelle norme pour l’industrie gazière européenne : le Groupe a fait passer de 5 à 10 ans la durée de conservation de nombreux mélanges gazeux à vocation analytique. Premiers bénéficiaires de cette avancée technologique majeure : les laboratoires d’analyse et de contrôle Qualité (industrie pharmaceutique, chimique et pétrochimique, contrôle environnemental) utilisant des mélanges de gaz très variés mais en petite quantité pour chaque calibration ou effectuant des analyses peu fréquentes

Jusqu’à maintenant, la stabilité des mélanges de gaz était garantie pour une période maximale de 5 ans en fonction de la nature et de la concentration de leurs composants. Mais Air Products est dorénavant en mesure d’offrir à ses clients un certificat d’analyse avec une garantie de 10 ans pour un grand nombre de mélanges gazeux de plus de 100 composants (dont l’argon, l’hélium, le dioxyde de carbone, l’oxygène, des gaz rares et de nombreux hydrocarbures et gaz halogénés).

Selon Gary Yates - Product Manager pour le marché analytique chez Air Products -« Ceci constitue une réelle percée pour l’industrie gazière. Les sociétés utilisant des mélanges de gaz très spécifiques pour la calibration ou des applications de contrôle Qualité savent en effet maintenant qu’elles peuvent utiliser leurs mélanges en toute sérénité jusqu’à 10 ans après leur achat, sans jamais douter de leur stabilité. » Il ajoute : « Il est important de ne pas employer les mélanges gazeux au-delà de leur date limite de stockage car tous finissent par se détériorer dans le temps. Toujours selon Gary, « Cette prolongation du temps de stockage est particulièrement intéressante pour les sociétés appelées à ne consommer que de petits volumes. Air Products to Build New World-Scale Air Separation Unit in Texas

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced plans to build a new world-scale air separation unit (ASU) at its La Porte, Texas industrial gases facility. The energy efficient ASU will replace older assets at the site and provide benefits to customers through higher-reliability pipeline oxygen and nitrogen supply, and enhanced production of merchant and electronics products including argon and xenon. The new ASU is to be on-stream in October 2011.

“This world-scale ASU at La Porte will serve customers across Air Products’ three major business areas of Tonnage Gases, Merchant Gases and Electronics and increase supply security and reliability. The new La Porte ASU will ensure the long-term operational viability and customer supply security of one of Air Products’ key liquid argon sources for the North American market. Argon is used primarily for welding, electronics, steel and metals processing applications. Xenon continues to grow as a key material used in the etching steps of semiconductor manufacturing, and the additional volume will support growth in the emerging technologies of plasma display and other lighting applications which depend on xenon’s special properties.

Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective October 1, 2009, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE:APD) will increase pricing and monthly service charges as follows for merchant customers in North America for the following products:

liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid argon, liquid and bulk hydrogen by 4% to 8%; and
liquid and bulk helium by 5% to 10%.

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

This pricing initiative is in response to higher operating costs related to running plants with significantly lower product demand, in addition to both higher energy costs and overall increases associated with the production and distribution of merchant gas products.

El servicio CryoEase de Carburos Metalicos una solucion para el suministro de gases

Carburos Metálicos, Grupo Air Products, cuenta con el servicio CryoEase® para el suministro de gases como el nitrógeno, oxígeno, argón o dióxido de carbono, entre otros. Gracias a este servicio se puede instalar un depósito compacto que proporciona el gas a la presión adecuada y de forma ininterrumpida, incluso durante la recarga de los depósitos.

Al utilizarse un solo depósito en vez de los habituales bloques de botellas, se consigue una reducción del espacio necesario. Por poner un ejemplo, un pequeño depósito de líquido puede contener el equivalente a 16 botellas a alta presión ocupando un espacio más reducido. Asimismo, al instalarse un sólo depósito se mejora la seguridad y eficacia, ya que el gas se canaliza directamente al punto de utilización, se evita el riesgo de contaminación cruzada al ser recipientes de uso exclusivo, y las entregas, que disminuyen respecto a las botellas, no requieren de la intervención ni manipulación por parte del cliente.

Otra de las ventajas del sistema CryoEase^® es su amplia gama de depósitos que van de los 25 a los 2.000 litros al igual que su fácil instalación. Air Products Announces Investments in Europe

Today, Air Products announced that it is capitalizing on its recent investment in Eastern Europe with several announcements in the region.

Air Products has signed a contract with Alcoa, in Russia, to supply nitrogen to Alcoa’s aluminum plant in Samara. As part of the agreement, Air Products will install two high purity nitrogen generators, and will take over the existing generator on the site. The new generators will be on-stream in 2009.

Russia is an important growth market for Air Products, where the company is involved in projects in the Moscow region and now in the Samara region.

As the largest supplier of technical and industrial gases in Poland, Air Products is further strengthening its leadership position in the Polish market with the announcement today that it will build a state-of-the-art cylinder filling depot in Warsaw, Poland. The construction is due to start in 2009 and the depot is due to be operational in 2010. The depot will use the latest technology to fill over 3,000 cylinders per day at a pressure of 200 bar, which is the standard cylinder pressure currently used in Poland. A 200 bar cylinder holds a greater quantity of gas than 150 bar cylinders, which translates into cost reduction for the users, as less frequent fillings are needed, and in turn reduces transport and storage costs.

The depot will be equipped to fill cylinders with all types of medical gases, technical gases, including argon, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and mixtures, and Linx™ gases, the most technically-advanced range of welding gases available in Poland, as well as modified atmospheric packaging (MAP) gases for the food industry.

This is the second technical gas filling depot to be built by Air Products in Poland, following the opening of the depot in Kędzierzyn-Koźle in 2005.

In Slovakia, Air Products’ new high purity hydrogen plant, in Novaky, is now on-stream. The plant will bring on additional hydrogen capacity to customers in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary. It complements the company’s existing facility in Litvinov, Czech Republic, and will support key industries such as glass, metals and food.

Plnící stanice technických plynů společnosti Air Products v Děčíně dokončena

Nadnárodní společnost Air Products, největší světový dodavatel průmyslových a vysoce čistých technických plynů a souvisejícího technologického vybavení, obdržela dnes povolení k provozu na novou plnicí stanici technických plynů, kterou postavila ve svém areálu v Děčíně, Rozbělesy.

Nová investice v objemu několika desítek milionů korun zvýší kapacitu původní plnicí stanice na dvojnásobek a umožní plnit plyn do tlakových lahví jak pod tlakem 200, tak i 300 barů (30MPa). Původní plnicí stanice bude přebudována na plnění tlakových lahví kyslíkem pro zdravotnické účely, v objemu od 2 do 50 litrů.

Z technických plynů jsou v Děčíně do tlakových lahví plněny kyslík, dusík, argon, kysličník uhličitý a jejich směsi. Žádný z nich není ani hořlavý ani výbušný. Tyto plyny jsou vyráběny v závodu Air Products v Litvínově a do Děčína jsou dováženy v cisternách. V prostorách plnicí stanice jsou tyto plyny skladovány v kapalném skupenství v zásobnících při teplotách v rozmezí mínus 175 až mínus 180 stupňů Celsia. Plyny v kapalném skupenství zabírají řádově stokrát menší objem než ve skupenství plynném. Zásobníky na jejich skladování (takzvané kryogenní zásobníky) dodala děčínská firma Chart Ferox, která sídlí ve stejné průmyslové zóně jako Air Products.

Zajímavou částí technologie jsou velké tepelné výměníky, ve kterých se před plněním do lahví plyn ze zásobníků ohřívá a přechází ze skupenství kapalného do plynného. Tepelné výměníky odvádějí chlad z plynu do okolního prostředí, při čemž se v okolí tepelných výměníků tvoří při zemi dobře viditelná mlha.

Tlakové lahve včetně technologií, do kterých jsou technické plyny v Děčíně plněny, představují technologickou špičku v oboru. Průmyslové plyny určené například pro sváření jsou plněny do tlakových lahví INTEGRA, které mají ve své hlavici zabudovány redukční ventil, rychlospojku a měřič tlaku. Jejich předností je i plnění pod tlakem 300 bar. Díky těmto technologiím a parametrům jsou lahve INTEGRA vysoce bezpečné, ekonomické a snadno se s nimi manipuluje, protože jsou o 50 cm nižší a o 24% lehčí než klasické lahve plněné pod tlakem 200 bar.

Air Products Launches a New Standard in Hydrogen Purity

Air Products is setting a new standard in hydrogen purity by launching the first hydrogen gas product to be supplied in the UK with its unique BIP® technology. With its assurance of ultra-high purity, this premium hydrogen gas product will have applications in a wide range of industries – in particular, it will improve analytical accuracy and offer lower levels of detection in laboratory applications for the environmental management, pharmaceutical and petrochemical sectors.

Gary Yates, Air Products’ European Product Manager Analytical and Laboratories, said:
“This is the purest hydrogen gas product currently available in the UK – containing less than 20 ppb of water, less than 100 ppb of oxygen and less than 10 ppb of total hydrocarbons making it perfect for analytical applications.”

BIP® technology was originally developed by Air Products in 1993 and since then has been successfully used to supply pure helium, nitrogen and argon. The technology encompasses an internal purifier and patented valve design to deliver ultra-high purity gas to the user. The main benefits of the technology include improved analytical accuracy, lower levels of detection and enhanced cost efficiency, due to extended column life and the added convenience of not having to use separate purifiers at the point of use. These benefits are now being extended to hydrogen BIP® cylinders for the first time.

For companies involved in environmental emissions control, for example, the new hydrogen BIP® cylinders can be used as a carrier gas in gas chromatography, where it is especially important that critical impurities are kept as low as possible to ensure that industrial processes stay within specified emissions limits. Air Products Reaches Microbulk Solutions Milestone with 10,000th Installation

Air Products (NYSE: APD) achieved a milestone in May with the 10,000th customer installation of its innovative Microbulk Solutions for small volume industrial gas customers. The installation of Microbulk Solutions at a customer manufacturing facility located in Georgia marked the achievement of the global product offering first introduced in the United States in 2005, and offered in Europe prior to 1990. Microbulk Solutions is a novel gas supply and services option that provides the most technically-advanced and cost-effective alternative to traditional cylinder gas packaging in the marketplace.

“Microbulk delivery service and on-site storage and blending systems are very popular and have reached the 10,000th installation because the offering brings the advantages of bulk supply to operations with less than traditional bulk delivery volumes. At the 10,000th installation, Microbulk was the answer for our customer’s argon needs for vacuum furnaces. Microbulk tank trucks provide fast fills into storage tanks that are designed to offer customers a range of flexible supply options. New Pharma Grade Gases Ensure Full Compliance

A new range of high grade compressed gases, developed by Air Products especially for the pharmaceutical industry, is helping manufacturers to achieve compliance and improve efficiency.

The recent introduction of directives 2004/27/EC and 2004/28/EC (amendments of former directives 2001/83/EC and 2001/82/EC), concerning the use of Active Product Ingredients (API) for human and veterinary use, requires manufacturers to provide an assurance of quality and traceability at every stage of the production process – from research and development, through to production and analysis. As part of this requirement, manufacturers must use high grade specialty gases, which have been produced according to ‘Good Manufacturing Practice’ (GMP) part II.

By upgrading their gas supplies to ensure compliance, some pharmaceutical companies are finding that they have an opportunity to improve process efficiency.

Lieve de Paepe, Air Products’ European Product Manager Analytical and Laboratories, explains:
“By choosing high grade gas products that come with a fully traceable Certificate of Analysis and compliant with the European Pharmacopoeia, manufacturers are finding that they can minimise the need for internal controls and improve efficiency.”

The first of the new range, Air Products’ Pharma grade Nitrogen is produced using analytical methods and analytical equipment specified in the corresponding monograph of the European Pharmacopoeia. Other gases, including carbon dioxide and oxygen, will be produced in the same way. In each case, the Certificates of Analysis are signed by a qualified person and the production process and analytical system are fully validated. The aim is to delegate the responsibility for a traceable Pharma grade gas to the gas supplier and release pharmaceutical companies from additional analysis requirements.

Air Products Forms Joint Venture with CNOOC Oil Base Group Ltd. to Serve China's Fast-Growing Fujian Province

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced that it has formed a joint venture with CNOOC Oil Base Group Ltd., which is a wholly owned subsidiary of China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), one of the largest state-owned oil companies and the leading offshore oil and gas producer in the country.

The joint venture will build and operate an air separation unit (ASU) and liquefier in Putian, Fujian Province, to produce liquid oxygen, nitrogen and argon by using cold energy from liquefied natural gas (LNG). It is the first application of LNG cold energy at an ASU plant in China.

Air Products will also build and operate the associated storage and distribution operations at the ASU plant to supply the liquid products to the local market in Fujian Province, a fast growing marketplace for industrial gases.

"This is the first use of cold energy to make industrial gas products in China. We find Air Products is the best partner for this effort because it is a leader in the LNG industry and has a proven track record in ASU plant design and in reliable and safe operation," said Mr. Meng Liming, general manager of CNOOC Oil Base Group Ltd. Fujian Province plays a significant role in the dynamic pan-Pearl River Delta economic region. In 2006, it ranked ninth in the country for its industrial output. The electronics and petrochemical industries have become emerging pillars of Fujian's economy, and contributed nearly half of the total production value of Fujian's industry.

Air Products Completes Purchase of BOC Gazy from Linde

Air Products (NYSE:APD) announced today that it has completed the acquisition of the industrial gas business of BOC Gazy Sp z o.o. from The Linde Group for 370 million euros or about $503 million. With this transaction, Air Products is now the leading industrial gas supplier in Central Europe’s fastest growing economy.

Air Products announced on January 8 its intention to acquire the BOC Gazy business and has since received clearance from the European and Polish regulatory authorities.

Air Products Announces Pricing Actions for North American Merchant Gas Customers

Air Products' Membrane Manufacturing Facility Expanding to Meet Growing Demand

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced that it is doubling manufacturing capacity at its PRISM® membrane production plant in St. Louis, Mo. The 25,000 square foot building expansion project, expected to be on-stream in the summer of 2007, will provide the additional capacity to meet membrane product demand from several major market applications. Air Products currently produces approximately 20,000 membrane modules per year at the location.

The St. Louis facility produces advanced proprietary hollow fiber membranes which separate mixtures of gases by permeating molecules through membrane fibers at varied rates. For example, the PRISM membranes can separate compressed air -- oxygen from nitrogen -- to produce an inert nitrogen gas with 95 to 99.5 percent purity. In addition to generating nitrogen from compressed air, Air Products' membranes are also used to dry air and natural gas, and to recover for reuse industrial process gases such as hydrogen. Air Products' PRISM membranes have a wide array of applications ranging from producing gases to inert fuel tanks aboard aircraft, to use in coal mine methane recovery operations in China, for use in enriching oxygen for passengers on the world's longest and highest highland railway -- the Qinghai-Tibet railway, and to produce nitrogen for blanketing chemical, methanol and liquefied gas shipments around the globe.

New Reporting Guidelines Put Pressure On Solvent-Using Industries, Says Air Products

New environmental reporting guidelines, published by the Department of Food and Rural Affairs, will add to pressure on solvent-using industries to maximise the efficiency of emissions control systems, says Air Products.

The proposed guidelines, based on identified key performance indicators, are set out in a consultation paper and companies have been asked to respond by 19 th September 2005. The guidelines are intended to help businesses to report on their environmental impact but, if they are not widely adopted, further regulation may follow.

As one of the 25 direct key performance indicators, all emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) should now be reported by UK businesses, regardless of whether they are listed as public companies. This means more businesses will need to report on their environmental impact for the first time.

Luc Rijnbeek, Commercial Manager Environmental Cryogenics, comments:

"Many solvent-using industries in the chemicals and pharmaceuticals sectors are reviewing their existing emissions control systems - looking for ways to minimise solvent consumption and reduce emissions levels.

"These new reporting guidelines will further add to this pressure and will encourage companies to look for technologies that will enable them to meet legislative targets. Cryogenic emissions control technology is a highly efficient solution and flexible enough to operate even at low gas flow rates, below 300 Nm³/h."

Cryogenic condensation technology has been used to recover solvent emissions from process gas streams since the early 1980s and has achieved recognition for its efficiency and its suitability for major scale applications, where large volumes of solvents are used.

Since then the technology has evolved and the new generation systems operate more flexibly, even where there are very low flow rates and a relatively high solvent loading. Using these new systems it is even possible to recover the solvents from the waste gas stream in a pure form so they can be reused or resold, so enhancing their overall sustainability.

Luc Rijnbeek comments:

"Today's cryogenic emissions recovery systems are designed to meet the needs of each individual plant. For some the original cryogenic condensation technology, which was built to cope with high volumes, is the most appropriate, but where flexibility and high concentrations at low flow rates are a consideration, the new cryogenic systems will optimise efficiency."

Solvent-using industries are also preparing to meet the new emissions limits established as part of the EU Solvent Emissions Directive, which they will need to comply with fully by the end of October 2007. These industries can apply for the reduction scheme, which will enable them to reduce emissions levels over a pre-agreed extended time period, but the deadline for these applications is the end of October 2005.

Air Products Institutes Bulk Industrial Gas Price Increases

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE:APD) is instituting the following initiatives:

Effective July 15, 2005, Air Products will increase pricing on liquid/bulk oxygen, nitrogen, argon, hydrogen and helium 5 to 25% as contracts allow. These price increases are primarily related to production, feedstock and distribution cost increases.
Also effective July 15, 2005, Air Products will increase the amount of its hazardous materials (hazmat) charge to $20 per delivery. This hazmat increase reflects the additional costs and investments related to enhanced security and compliance activities.
Air Products instituted an argon recovery charge of $3.00 per 1000 scf, effective June 15, 2005, to cover the significant additional cost increases it has experienced to produce argon as a result of softening steel production and in an effort to meet continued strong demand.

Air Products Announces Surcharge For L/B Oxygen, Nitrogen, And Argon Customers And Price Increase For Hydrogen, Helium Customers

Effective March 15, 2005, Air Products (NYSE:APD) will institute a surcharge of $.30 per 1000 standard cubic feet on liquid/bulk oxygen, nitrogen and argon. This surcharge is required to offset extraordinary increases in power, natural gas, coal, diesel fuel and distribution costs associated with merchant oxygen, nitrogen and argon production and distribution.

In addition, hydrogen and helium product pricing will increase by ten percent for merchant customers in North America, and discounts on monthly charges for hydrogen and helium tube trailers will be eliminated. The helium and hydrogen product price increase is necessary to recover continued escalation of feedstock and distribution costs while allowing Air Products to maintain its high standard of safe and reliable customer service and supply.

Air Products is also advising its hydrogen customers that in response to natural gas volatility, supply contracts will be restructured to enhance their ability to more effectively recover increases in natural gas cost.

EU-Wide Pollution Inventory Puts Focus on Emissions Control, Says Air Products

The publication of a new EU-wide pollution inventory, which allows industries to compare their environmental performance, is encouraging more chemical and pharmaceutical businesses to prioritise emissions control, says Air Products.

The pollution inventory or European Pollutant Emission Register was published earlier this year in response to the 1996 EU Directive on integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC). It is designed to help businesses from a wide range of industry sectors to benchmark their performance in pollution prevention.

The inventory focuses on a number of specific emissions, such as chlorinated solvents, a high proportion of which are produced by industries in France and the UK. It also identifies the UK as one of the main sources of VOC emissions including benzene, hydrogen cyanide, dichloroethane and non-methane volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Diana Raine, business manager for cryogenic applications, Air Products explains:

"In the past, in the absence of comparative data, there has been a tendency for UK companies to believe that they are doing more than their counterparts in the EU to minimise air pollution.

"This inventory shows that in fact the UK could be a primary source of some emissions and closer control may be necessary to ensure we meet any future emissions reduction targets which may be imposed."

The pollution inventory is just part of an overall tightening of environmental legislation designed to minimise pollution and specifically, reduce air emissions. In response, Air Products has developed a state of the art cryogenic VOC recovery solution, called Air Products ExStream™ which is efficient, compact and highly adaptable – capable of recovering even complex VOCs at low gas flow rates, below 300 Nm³/h.

Syngenta Invests in ExStream™ Emissions Control Solution

On Thursday 8th July, the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire officially presented the Queen's Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2004, to Air Products Special Gases Group, for its BIP® technology, at a ceremony held in Crewe.

The award celebrates a revolutionary innovation, as the BIP® technology is the first real change made in industrial gas cylinder technology for 100 years. It's Time to Prioritise Air Emissions Control, Says Air Products

Despite a sharp increase in applications for Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) permits at the end of last year, some smaller installations, coming under such regulations for the first time, are failing to prioritise air pollution prevention, warns Air Products.

Around 5000 installations are due to fall under the IPPC regime, sector by sector, between now and 2007 and a flood of applications for permits from the organic chemicals process industry was received at the end of last year. This sector includes many solvent-using processes, typically operated by chemicals and pharmaceutical industry manufacturers.

While this legislative requirement to prevent air pollution and minimise solvent emissions to air is not new to most major installations, which were previously affected by PPC, the broader remit of IPPC means some smaller installations are affected for the first time.

Diana Raine, business manager for cryogenic applications at Air Products, said:

"Deadlines for IPPC permit applications affecting solvent-using industries are leading to an increase in enquiries about cryogenic solvent recovery systems, which operate to near zero emissions and comply with the toughest European emissions limits.

"However, most of these enquiries are from major installations seeking to update current abatement systems in order to stay one step ahead of tightening emissions legislation.

"We are concerned that some solvent-using industries, particularly smaller installations falling under IPPC for the first time may be taking a piecemeal approach to readiness for IPPC and may not be prioritising air pollution prevention early enough."

In addition to the roll-out of the IPPC regulations, solvent-using industries will also be aware that further specific legislation is likely to bring reductions of complex emissions including volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

"As legislation tightens, forward thinking environmental managers need to ensure that air pollution prevention is prioritised and considered as part of a holistic plan for IPPC readiness.

"Cryogenic solvent recovery systems operate to near zero emissions and are now more compact and flexible than before, capable of operating at lower gas flow rates, below 300 Nm3/h. This makes them an ideal, long term solution for smaller installations. It can also improve the installation's sustainability, by recovering VOCs which can be reused on site."

Rising Cost of Waste Drives Interest in Sustainable Solvent Recovery, Says Air Products

With landfill costs due to rise from the start of April 2004, the UK chemical and pharmaceutical industries are turning to the latest cryogenic methods of emissions control, capable of enhanced sustainability, in order to drive efficiency, according to Air Products.

In the past many chemicals and pharmaceutical businesses have relied on traditional emission abatement technologies, which work by a process of adsorption onto activated carbon, in order to manage the recovery of harmful solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, one significant drawback of such systems is the need to dispose of the VOC contaminated carbon materials at designated landfill sites.

From 1st April 2004 the cost of 'active waste' disposal is rising from £11 per tonne to £15 per tonne - an increase of 36% and are expected to rise further by 2010. According to Air Products, this increase in costs, is prompting many businesses to review their emissions control systems.

Diana Raine, business manager for cryogenic applications at Air Products, said:

"This hike in Landfill tax costs represents another cost burden for the UK chemicals and pharmaceutical industries, which will impact on their competitiveness.

"In readiness, many businesses are reviewing emissions control systems and where possible are adopting more sustainable solutions, such as cryogenic systems, capable of reusing recovered solvents."

Cryogenic solvent recovery technology is suitable for use across a range of manufacturing processes and such systems are now more compact and capable of recovering even the most complex VOCs at low gas flow rates. The systems can also be adapted quickly and easily on site to allow for changes in gas flows.

However, to date, only relatively few companies have found ways of reusing recovered solvents. Diana Raine explains:

"Pharmaceuticals and chemicals businesses are often required to go into production as quickly as possible - for example, as soon as a new drug has been sponsored. At this stage little thought is given to how waste substances may be reused. However, where the reuse of recovered solvent has gone ahead some companies have been able to achieve major savings, significantly reducing their solvent consumption.

"In terms of sustainability, cryogenic solvent recovery systems are an ideal solution. Not only can manufacturers reuse the recovered solvent as part of their own processes, they can also choose to sell the recovered solvent elsewhere if they prefer. In addition, the liquid nitrogen used as part of the cryogenic freezing process can itself be recovered and reused elsewhere on site to ensure an inert process environment."
