Air Products Fills 100th Helium ISO Container at Doe Canyon

Air Products (NYSE: APD), a global leader in helium production, recently reached a milestone at its newest helium production facility in Colorado by filling its 100th helium ISO container. Air Products’ Doe Canyon plant is the only one in the world extracting helium from a gas stream composed primarily of carbon dioxide (CO2). The helium from this facility strengthens and diversifies Air Products’ helium supply chain to further enable the reliable delivery of product for its customers around the world.

“We are very pleased with the operational performance of our Doe Canyon helium plant, which is one-of-a-kind and sets a new standard by producing helium from a naturally occurring carbon dioxide stream. We will continue to make the investments necessary to maintain the leading market position in this industry that we have established and enhanced over many decades,” said Walter Nelson, vice president and general manager – Global Helium at Air Products. “This facility could not have been achieved without the cooperation of our site host. They allowed us to move forward with this outside-the-box thinking to helium production.” The site host is Kinder Morgan CO2 Company, acting for and on behalf of the Doe Canyon Deep Unit, in its capacity as Unit Operator.

Much of the helium produced in the United States today comes from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) system. The BLM system is in decline, however, and eventually that storage supply will be depleted. At the same time, the world’s demand for helium is likely to continue to grow, requiring additional new sources of helium.

“This is not just another liquid helium plant. By using cutting-edge technology, combined with world class operations, we’re able to recover helium from CO2. It is one more step, in a series of steps, Air Products has taken to be the most reliable helium supplier in the world,” said Corning Painter, Air Products’ executive vice president - Industrial Gases.

Most of the helium produced today is a by-product of natural gas (methane) processing. However, not all natural gas fields contain helium and, in fact, very few gas fields have high enough helium concentrations to make it economical for extraction. In this case, the naturally-occurring gas is composed primarily of carbon dioxide, and it contains high enough concentrations of helium to make extraction economical. The Doe Canyon plant is expected to produce up to 230 million cubic feet of helium per year, which can replace more than 15 percent of the current BLM reserve helium supply as that system declines.

Air Products’ Colorado facility uses a new technology process to produce pure helium from the carbon dioxide stream. Air Products extracts the helium from the gas stream and returns the carbon dioxide to Kinder Morgan CO2 for its intended enhanced oil recovery (EOR) use. Kinder Morgan CO2, supplies this carbon dioxide to the Permian Basin in West Texas, where it is used for EOR.

Helium is used in many unique and valued applications including: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); lifting for high altitude scientific research balloons, blimps and party balloons; fiber optics and semiconductor manufacturing; metallurgy; breathing atmospheres for deep diving or unique blood gas medical mixtures; analytical chemistry; pressurizing and purging pipes, vessels, and other critical equipment; leak detection; and other advanced applications.

Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective March 1, 2016, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly service charges for merchant customers in North America. The pricing adjustments include increases of:

Up to 20% for liquid argon
Up to 15% for liquid and bulk hydrogen
Up to 10% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid and bulk helium, and liquid carbon dioxide

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on specific situations.

These adjustments are in response to the cost impact associated with the significant slowdown in the steel market, and increasing operational and delivery costs associated with specific regional supply and demand imbalances in order to meet customer needs. In addition to covering increases in operating expenses, Air Products continues to make significant investments aimed at improving the reliability, security, safety, and the efficiency of its operations.

Doppelsieg in Katar: Air Products errichtet Heliumanlage für RasGas und erhält langfristigen Liefervertrag

Air Products (NYSE: APD) verzeichnet zwei Erfolge im Heliumsektor, die die Marktführerschaft des Unternehmens unterstreichen: Zum einen wird Air Products die RasGas Company Ltd (RasGas) mit der Ausrüstung für eine neue Helium-3-Anlage am Standort Ras Laffan Industrial City, Katar, versorgen. Zum anderen erhält Air Products auch den Zuschlag für die langfristige Heliumversorgung aus der Helium-3-Anlage, die voraussichtlich bis zu 0,4 Bscf (Billion Standard Cubic Feet) flüssiges Helium pro Jahr produzieren wird. Mit dem Produktionsbeginn 2018 sichert sich das Unternehmen seine Position als weltweit größter kommerzieller Heliumanbieter.

„Das sind zwei große Errungenschaften für unser Unternehmen. Air Products hat eine bestehende Geschäftsbeziehung mit RasGas in anderen Segmenten sowie eine gemeinsame Erfolgsgeschichte in Katar: Hierbei sorgte Air Products für die Technologie und das Equipment zur Erdgasverflüssigung sowie für Helium-Extraktionsanalgen für alle 14 Flüssigerdgas-Leitungen (LNG) von RasGas und Qatargas. Air Products dankzij nieuwe projecten in Qatar grootste leverancier van helium ter wereld

Air Products, leverancier van industriële gassen, heeft vandaag bekendgemaakt dat het bedrijf twee nieuwe, grote projecten voor de productie van helium heeft binnengehaald. Air Products zal de installaties leveren voor de nieuwe Helium 3 fabriek van RasGas Company Ltd., die gebouwd wordt op het Barzan-complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar. Daarnaast heeft Air Products het langlopende contract voor de productie en levering van de helium vanaf de nieuwe fabriek gewonnen. Naar verwachting zal de fabriek per jaar zo’n 15 miljoen liter vloeibare helium produceren. Als de productie in de nieuwe fabriek in 2018 van start gaat, wordt Air Products de grootste, commerciële leverancier van helium ter wereld.

“De twee nieuwe contracten zijn belangrijke mijlpalen voor ons bedrijf”, zei Walter Nelson, vice-president en general manager Global Helium bij Air Products. “Het contract voor de levering van de installaties voor de nieuwe fabriek is een bewijs van het vertrouwen van Rasgas in Air Products als leverancier van technologie en equipment voor de productie en processing van gas en helium. Maar net zo belangrijk is het lange termijn contract voor de levering van helium vanaf de nieuwe fabriek. Daardoor kunnen we al onze klanten de komende jaren een betrouwbare levering van helium garanderen.”

Air Products werkt al lange tijd samen met RasGas in diverse andere markten en bedrijfstakken. Ook in Qatar heeft Air Products samen met Rasgas al een aantal succesvolle projecten afgerond. Air Products leverde aan RasGas en Qatargas bijvoorbeeld al technologie voor het vloeibaar maken van aardgas, de belangrijkste installaties voor liquefactie en installaties voor het onttrekken van helium aan LNG. Ook bouwde Air Products in Ras Laffan een grote luchtscheidingsfabriek (ASU) voor Oryx GTL.

Air Products is al meer dan vijftig jaar actief in het Midden-Oosten. Het bedrijf bouwde in de vijftiger jaren de allereerste ASU in de regio en levert al meer dan 50 jaar industriële gassen aan klanten in de regio. Het hoofdkantoor voor de activiteiten in het Midden-Oosten is gevestigd in Dubai. De activiteiten in de regio zijn de laatste jaren in een stroomversnelling geraakt omdat verschillende bedrijven een beroep deden op Air Products voor de bouw van luchtscheidings- en waterstoffabrieken. In april 2015 kondigde het bedrijf aan, het grootste complex voor de productie van industriële gassen ter wereld in Jazan (Saudi-Arabië) te bouwen en te exploiteren. Air Products werkt daarbij nauw samen met de Abdullah Hashim Group en ACWA Power.

Het contract voor de levering van helium uit de nieuwe Helium 3 fabriek is een volgende stap in het proces dat Air Products recentelijk in gang heeft gezet om een betrouwbare levering van helium aan haar klanten te kunnen garanderen. Air Products heeft tijdens recente veilingen een substantiële hoeveelheid helium uit de reserves van het United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) toegewezen gekregen. Bovendien startte Air Products in augustus met de verkoop van helium, die met behulp van een eigen innovatieve technologie gewonnen wordt uit een natuurlijke bron in Colorado, die koolstofdioxide uitstoot.

Air Products heeft al veel nieuwe technologie ontwikkeld voor de winning, productie, distributie en opslag van helium, die tegenwoordig veelvuldig in de heliumindustrie gebruikt wordt. Het bedrijf exploiteert vele heliuminstallaties over de hele wereld.

Air Products Building Helium Plant for RasGas; Wins Long-Term Helium Supply Contract

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced two big helium market wins that demonstrate the company’s industry leadership. Air Products will supply to RasGas Company Ltd (RasGas), the helium licensor package equipment for the new Helium 3 plant to be located at the Barzan facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar. Additionally, Air Products won the award for the long-term helium supply from the Helium 3 plant which is expected to produce up to 0.4 Bsf/annum of liquid helium, and in achieving this, the company will again be the world’s largest commercial supplier of helium when the plant begins production in 2018.

The equipment win to build the helium plant demonstrates RasGas’ confidence in Air Products as a global supplier of high technology gas processing equipment and helium technology. Air Products has an existing relationship with RasGas in other business and markets, and a successful history of accomplishments in Qatar. Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective October 1, 2015, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly service charges for merchant customers in North America. The pricing adjustments include increases of:

Up to 20% for liquid argon and liquid carbon dioxide
Up to 15% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid and bulk hydrogen
Up to 10% for liquid and bulk helium
Up to 10% for tank monthly service charges

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on specific situations.

These price adjustments are in response to rising costs and will also support continued investments to improve the reliability, security, safety, and efficiency of operations.

Air Products Holds Grand Opening at Its Doe Canyon Helium Plant

Air Products (NYSE: APD), a global leader in helium production, today held a grand opening at its new Doe Canyon helium production facility in Colorado. The Doe Canyon helium plant is the only one in the world extracting helium from a gas stream composed primarily of carbon dioxide (CO2). The helium from this new facility further diversifies Air Products’ supply chain to ensure a reliable and stable supply of product for its customers.

“Today celebrates an accomplishment that has not been achieved before. We are capturing an important molecule—that being helium—from a naturally occurring stream of carbon dioxide provided by this site’s host Kinder Morgan, who I would like to thank for their cooperation with this venture,” said Seifi Ghasemi, Air Products’ chairman, president and chief executive officer. “In doing so, our company takes another step forward to maintain the leading position we have earned in this industry and to help to ensure Air Products continues to build on the helium market leadership established and enhanced over many decades.”

Much of the helium produced in the United States today comes from the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) system, however, the BLM system is in decline, and eventually that storage supply will be depleted. At the same time, the world’s demand for helium is likely to continue to grow and is why new sources of helium are needed. The purified helium at the new Colorado facility will be liquefied on-site for subsequent delivery to Air Products’ customers. The plant is expected to produce up to 230 million standard cubic feet of helium per year, replacing more than 15 percent of the current BLM reserve helium supply as that system declines.

“People often talk about ‘thinking outside-the-box’, and that is really the case in this instance. This is not just another liquid helium plant, we’re using cutting edge technology to extract and produce helium that would have otherwise been lost. Bringing the Doe Canyon helium plant on-stream is just one more step in a series of steps that we’ve taken in order to become the most reliable supplier of helium to our customers around the world,” said Corning Painter, Air Products’ executive vice president and general manager of Industrial Gases.

Most of the helium produced around the world is a by-product of natural gas (methane) processing. However, not all natural gas fields contain helium, and in fact very few gas fields have high enough helium concentrations to make it economical for extraction. In this case, the natural gas is composed of primarily CO2, and it contains high enough concentrations of helium to make it economical for extraction.

Air Products’ Colorado facility will use a new technology process to produce pure helium from the CO2 stream. Kinder Morgan, operator of the Doe Canyon Unit, supplies this CO2 to the Permian Basin in West Texas, where the CO2 is used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Air Products will extract the helium and return the CO2 to Kinder Morgan for its intended EOR use.

Pouťové balonky mohou být nebezpečné, prodejci je plní třaskavým vodíkem

Začala sezóna poutí a kromě stále modernějších atrakcí, houpaček a kolotočů k nim neodmyslitelně patří také pouťové balonky. Pamětníkům už sotva někdo uvěří, že se ještě před třiceti lety obyčejným lehkým plynem nafouknutý balonek prodával za pár korun, dnes je to dvacetkrát i čtyřicetkrát tolik. Ani vysoká cena však nemusí být zárukou bezpečí a odborníci varují před balonky, které jsou plněné třaskavým vodíkem: mohou explodovat a způsobit vážné zranění.

Stále častěji se totiž vyskytují případy, kdy prodejci, ve snaze ušetřit pár korun, plní balonky namísto bezpečného helia výbušným vodíkem. Přitom bezpečného helia, které se pro plnění v baloncích prodává pod obchodním názvem Balloonium, je na trhu dostatek.

„V posledním roce zájem o Balloonium mezi provozovateli stánků poklesl téměř o čtvrtinu. Vzhledem k tomu, že balonků se rozhodně méně neprodává, vysvětlujeme si to tím, že obchodníci používají k jejich plnění místo helia i vodík,“ tvrdí Ing. Roman Král, manažer pro maloobchod ze společnosti Air Products, což je jeden z největších světových výrobců a dodavatelů technických plynů.

O tom, že se radost z balonku může ve zlomku sekundy proměnit ve zděšení a bolest, svědčí několik případů z minulosti. Dvanáctileté dívce ze severní Moravy doma vybuchl nafukovací balonek zakoupený v tržnici a způsobil jí popáleniny obličeje a krku. Mediálně známý byl případ německých turistů, kteří si v Děčíně koupili dva pouťové balonky naplněné vodíkem. Ty jim ovšem v autě po 100 metrech jízdy explodovaly, poničily vůz a jedné z cestujících rána trvale poškodila sluch. Následující žaloba o odškodné skončila až u Ústavního soudu.

S popáleninami způsobenými balonky naplněnými výbušnými plyny se ve své praxi setkala MUDr. Zuzana Kapounková z kliniky popáleninové medicíny Fakultní nemocnice Královské Vinohrady. „Nejhorší jsou popáleniny v oblasti obličeje a rukou, k nimž nejčastěji dochází při explozi balonku v uzavřeném prostoru. Taková zranění pak mohou mít trvalé následky,“ řekla MUDr. Zuzana Kapounková.

Povinnost plnit balonky heliem stanoví zvláštní technický předpis TPG 401 01, o kterém někteří prodejci začali tvrdit, že byl ke konci loňského roku zrušen, takže podle jejich výkladu teď mohou balonky plnit vodíkem zcela legálně.

„Z nedávného sdělení Českého plynárenského svazu adresovaného České asociaci technických plynů však vyplývá, že předpis TPG 401 01 týkající se použití technických plynů pro plnění balonků je zrušen pouze podmínečně, a to až do doby vydání ČSN 07 8304 doplněné o ustanovení řešící tuto problematiku. V současné době je tedy původní předpis stále platný,“ vysvětluje Jiří Chmel, konzultant České asociace technických plynů, který se dlouhodobě podílí na řešení požární bezpečnosti v oblasti problematiky plynů.

Kontrolou prodejců balonků se dlouhodobě zabývá Česká obchodní inspekce. „V letošním roce jsme v rámci pražské Matějské poutě zkontrolovali tři prodejce balonků, tedy všechny, kteří se v čase kontroly na pouti nacházeli. Výsledky kontrol byly v pořádky – všechny balonky byly plněné heliem. Teď nastává období regionálních poutí a také na nich se ve zvýšené míře zaměříme na to, čím prodejci plní balonky,“ říká mluvčí ČOI Jiří Fröhlich.

V každém případě všichni oslovení odborníci zákazníkům doporučují, aby se při nákupu balonků vždy ujistili, jakým plynem balonky naplnil. A v případě, že si nejsou jisti, aby takové balonky rozhodně neuchovávali v uzavřeném prostoru.

Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective October 1, 2014, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly service charges for merchant customers in North America. The pricing adjustments include increases of:

Up to 15% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid and bulk hydrogen, helium and bulk carbon monoxide
Up to 20% for liquid carbon dioxide
Up to 25% for liquid argon

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

The price adjustments are in response to several factors including supply and demand imbalances which drive-up production and product distribution costs, increases in operating expenses for natural gas and electrical power, plant maintenance, and employee labor and benefits. Additionally, Air Products continues to make significant investment in infrastructure, technologies, and productivity programs aimed at improving the reliability, safety, and cost efficiency of its operations.

Air Products and MATHESON Helium Production Begins in Wyoming

Air Products (NYSE: APD) and Matheson Tri-Gas, Inc. (MATHESON), a member of the Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (TNSC) group, today announced that production operations have begun with the filling and shipping of the first two 11,000 gallon helium ISO containers from their jointly-owned liquid helium production plant near Big Piney, Wyoming. The plant is designed to produce 200 million standard cubic feet of helium per year initially, with expectations for future expansion to 400 million standard cubic feet per year.

The Big Piney helium facility purifies and liquefies a helium feedgas stream that is supplied by Denbury Resources’ Riley Ridge gas processing plant. The Denbury plant processes a raw gas stream produced from the LaBarge Field in Wyoming, one of the largest helium-rich gas fields in the United States. The LaBarge Field is believed to contain sufficient helium reserves to support production for decades.

“This plant is beginning production operations at a good time as both suppliers and manufacturing end-users of helium are still recovering from a global helium supply shortage. Big Piney alone won’t solve the supply issue, but it will help to provide additional helium at this critical time. Going forward, the Big Piney plant will further diversify our helium source portfolio in our efforts to reliably serve our customers,” said Walter Nelson, general manager - Worldwide Helium at Air Products.

Śnieg można wyprodukować nawet na Saharze!

Firma Air Products, największy dostawca gazów technicznych w Polsce, od lat wspiera organizatorów zimowych zawodów sportowych na świecie dostarczając gazy techniczne do produkcji śniegu oraz technologię służącą do mrożenia rozbiegu skoczni narciarskich. Dzięki tej współpracy udało się dotychczas przeprowadzić liczne imprezy zimowe w niekoniecznie zimowych warunkach.

W sytuacji, gdy brakuje wystarczającej ilości śniegu lub, kiedy pogoda nie sprzyja utrzymaniu się odpowiedniej ilości naturalnej pokrywy śnieżnej, może zachodzić potrzeba wyprodukowania śniegu. Janusz Paździora, specjalista Air Products ds. kriogeniki radzi jak można tego dokonać.

„Do wyprodukowania śniegu niezbędne są trzy składniki: woda, sprężone powietrze oraz ciekły azot. Jeżeli są dostępne, wówczas śnieg można wyprodukować nawet na Saharze! Oczywiście na pustyni utrzyma się on krócej, niż w strefie umiarkowanej. Jednak przy temperaturze powietrza wynoszącej 16-17 stopni Celsjusza oraz standardowej temperaturze śniegu wynoszącej około -8 stopni Celsjusza, powinien się on utrzymać dwa lub trzy dni. Jeżeli organizatorzy zawodów dysponują odpowiednią infrastrukturą, wtedy śnieg może być produkowany na bieżąco” – mówi Janusz Paździora.

Co ważne, śnieg produkowany przy pomocy takiej technologii nie zawiera żadnych chemikaliów, jest więc identyczny z naturalnym. Sam proces produkcji śniegu polega na podawaniu przez dysze bardzo zimnego gazu (ciekłego azotu o temperaturze -196 stopni) do mieszanki sprężonego powietrza i wody. W zależności od dobranych parametrów, a konkretnie ciśnienia sprężonego powietrza, można uzyskać śnieg o bardzo małych kryształkach, twardy i wytrzymały, który idealnie nadaje się do uprawiania narciarstwa. Wydajność tej technologii sięga nawet 100 m3 śniegu na godzinę.

„Istnieje też technologia służąca do zamrażania rozbiegu skoczni narciarskich. System do spryskiwania torów na zimno również wykorzystuje ciekły azot o temperaturze -196 stopni Celsjusza. Urządzenie zostało opracowane przez Air Products w 2007 roku, kiedy dodatnie temperatury zagrażały organizacji Pucharu Świata w Zakopanem. Dzięki niemu nawet przy niesprzyjających warunkach pogodowych kibice mogą cieszyć się tą spektakularna dyscypliną. W ostatnich latach nasza firma kilkakrotnie wspierała organizatorów Pucharu Świata w skokach narciarskich. Ostatnio dostarczyliśmy ciekły azot oraz technologię Air Products do zamrażania torów na potrzeby konkursu skoków narciarskich mi in. w Wiśle 16 stycznia i w Zakopanem 18-19 stycznia br.” – dodaje Janusz Paździora.

Air Products friert Skisprungschanzen für FIS-Weltcup in Polen ein

Air Products, der größte Anbieter von Industriegasen in Polen, unterstützt die Organisatoren des FIS-Weltcup-Skispringens bei den Wettkämpfen im polnischen Wisła und Zakopane. Die Temperaturen in Wisła sind kürzlich über Null Grad Celsius angestiegen, was den Weltcup am 16. Januar 2014 möglicherweise verhindert hätte. Die Experten von Air Products haben daher flüssigen Stickstoff und ein selbst entwickeltes kryogenes Eindüssystem eingesetzt, um die Sprungschanze in Wisła für den Weltcup künstlich einzufrieren. Air Products gefriert ebenfalls die Schanze in Zakopane, damit der Weltcup dort ab Samstag, 18. Januar, stattfinden kann.

Um eine Sprungschanze wettkampftauglich zu machen, benötigen die Spezialisten von Air Products rund zwei Tage. Dabei setzen sie etwa 1.000 Liter flüssigen Stickstoff im Air Products-kryogenes Eindüssystem ein. Auch an den Wettkampftagen halten sie sich bereit, für den Fall, dass die Temperaturen wieder über den Gefrierpunkt steigen.

„Wir schätzen die Hilfe von Air Products beim Einfrieren der Schanze Wisła für den Skisprung-Weltcup. Unserem polnischen Ski-Team drücken wir die Daumen“, kommentiert Andrzej Wąsowicz, Präsident des Weltcup-Organisationskomitees in Wisła.

Für das kryogene Eindüssystem verwendet Air Products flüssigen Stickstoff mit einer Temperatur von -196 Grad Celsius, um eine Sprungschanze zu frosten. Das System entwickelte Air Products 2007, als ein FIS-Weltcup-Skispringen in Zakopane ebenfalls durch zu hohe Temperaturen gefährdet war. Zu dieser Zeit versorgte Air Products die Weltcup-Organisatoren auch mit Flüssigstickstofftanks und organisierte das Einfrieren der Schanze. Nach dem Wettkampf wurde Air Products mit der Auszeichnung „Bester Förderer des Skisprung-Weltcups“ geehrt.

Air Products "Thinks Outside-the-Box" in Obtaining New Helium Source

At a time when both suppliers and manufacturing end-users of helium continue to face a critical supply shortage, Air Products (NYSE: APD), a global leader in helium production, continues to take actions to improve future supply reliability for its customers by “thinking outside-the-box” to develop new source opportunities. Air Products today announced a new project targeting the extraction of helium from a naturally occurring underground carbon dioxide (CO2) gas source that is being processed by Kinder Morgan CO2 Company, LP at a facility in Doe Canyon, Colorado. Helium production at Doe Canyon is expected to begin in the spring of 2015.

The project will use a new technology process cycle to produce pure helium from the CO2 stream that contains recoverable amounts of helium. Kinder Morgan supplies this CO2 to the Permian Basin in West Texas where the CO2 is used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Air Products will extract the helium and return the CO2 stream to Kinder Morgan for its intended EOR use. The purified helium will be liquefied on-site for subsequent delivery to Air Products’ customers.

“This is an innovative project and we see this as an opportunity to leverage our proprietary technology for future CO2 on-purpose helium extraction projects. This is a critical step in finding new sources of helium at a time when there is a global shortage,” said Walter Nelson, director - Helium Sourcing at Air Products. “Many people are aware that helium is a by-product of natural gas processing; however, not all natural gas fields contain helium in high enough concentrations to make it economical for extraction. Combine that with the fact that the existing Bureau of Land Management (BLM) helium reserve is a finite supply, and it becomes quite clear that it is essential to always be looking for novel ways to secure more helium. This project demonstrates our commitment to our customers.”

Once onstream, the Doe Canyon helium plant would be the only one in the world extracting helium from a gas stream composed primarily of CO2. Air Products’ Doe Canyon helium plant is expected to produce up to 230 million standard cubic feet per year, replacing more than 15% of the current BLM reserve helium supply as that system declines. “Doe Canyon alone won’t provide the full answer to the supply issue, but it is a positive step in the right direction,” Nelson said.

Earlier this month Air Products applauded the United States’ government for passing vital legislation for the continuation of helium supply from the BLM reserve in Amarillo, Texas, which currently provides 30 percent of the world’s helium. The continued supply from the BLM reserve provides a bridge for new helium projects like Doe Canyon to be developed and brought onstream. Another new project is Air Products’ jointly-owned liquid helium production plant near Big Piney, Wyoming, which is designed to process natural gas from the Riley Ridge Field, one of the largest helium-rich natural gas fields in the U.S. The Riley Ridge field is believed to contain sufficient helium reserves to support production for decades.

Air Products, a global leader in helium production, while pleased with the BLM supply continuation, cautioned that the helium shortage still remains. “There will be no increase in the amount of helium molecules being produced by the BLM as a result of this legislation. The legislation maintains the status quo in terms of helium availability. However, we are just pleased that the legislation’s passing prevented a difficult supply situation from getting any worse,” said Walter Nelson, director of Helium Sourcing at Air Products.

The continued supply from the BLM reserve also provides a bridge for new helium projects to be developed and brought onstream. One such project is Air Products’ new, jointly-owned liquid helium production plant near Big Piney, Wyoming, which is scheduled to be onstream later this year. The facility will process natural gas from the Riley Ridge Field, one of the largest helium-rich natural gas fields in the United States. The Riley Ridge field is believed to contain sufficient helium reserves to support production for decades. Air Products also continues to take actions to improve future helium supply reliability for its customers by looking for other helium source opportunities to participate in as a buyer, an investor and an operator.

Additionally, Air Products encourages all users of helium to review their operations for ways to conserve or recycle helium. “We have worked with several customers and will do so with others interested in looking for ways to conserve or reduce the amount of helium used in their operations. In fact, we consistently review our own use for ways to save,” said Van Sloun. In 2011 Air Products was presented an “Innovation for Growth” award from Royal Philips Electronics for its work together with Philips to significantly reduce the amount of helium used at Philips’ Latham, New York manufacturing facility.

Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective October 1, 2013, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly charges for merchant customers in North America. The pricing adjustments include increases of:

Up to 12% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, and liquid carbon dioxide.
Up to 20% for liquid argon, liquid and bulk hydrogen, and bulk carbon monoxide.
Liquid and bulk helium pricing adjustments will be determined on a contract by contract basis.

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

The revised prices are in response to various factors, including supply and demand imbalances, that are driving up production and delivery costs, and increases in operating expenses such as employee labor and benefits, natural gas and energy, and maintenance. Air Products continues to make significant investments in infrastructure, technologies, and productivity programs aimed at improving the reliability, safety, and cost efficiency of its operations.

Air Products Helium Director Testifies Before Senate on Pending Helium Bill

Air Products (NYSE: APD) director of Helium Sourcing and Supply Chain, Walter Nelson, testified today before the United States Senate on pending S. 783, the Helium Stewardship Act of 2013, to reform and reauthorize private helium sales from the federal helium reservoir. Nelson told the Senate that Air Products, the global leader in helium production, supports the proposed bill because it accomplishes the goals of maximizing the return to the United States taxpayer, ensuring the reliability of supply for end users, honoring contract and property rights, and it does this without disrupting the helium supply chains.

“The world helium markets are in a state of transition and uncertainty, and the world’s current largest supply – the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) reservoir – is in decline. Significant new sources are coming online, but there have been repeated delays. Shortages are creating tremendous volatility in the spot markets,” Nelson told the Senate. “This is not the type of environment to experiment with wholesale, untested changes in the world’s most stable source of supply – the BLM Reserve. This environment calls for level-headed reforms that are phased in incrementally. That is exactly the approach you have taken. Your bill would ensure that taxpayers get a fair market price for the government’s helium, while preserving much of the stability that has benefited consumers and high-tech manufacturers across the country.”

Der US-amerikanische Industriegasespezialist und führende Heliumproduzent Air Products unternimmt weitere Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung der Versorgungssicherheit seiner Kunden mit Helium. Das Unternehmen unterzeichnete gemeinsam mit der russischen Gazprom Export LLC eine Absichtserklärung, die den langfristigen Plan zum Heliumbezug von Gazprom bestätigt.

Gazprom beabsichtigt die Erschließung der umfangreichen Erdgasressourcen in Ostsibirien und plant die Errichtung einer großen Heliumfördereinrichtung für die heliumhaltigen Erdgasvorkommen in der Region von Blagoveshchensk ab 2018. Neben dem Bezug von Helium, benennt die Absichtserklärung auch
Air Products’ Interesse, mit Gazprom in den Bereichen Logistik, Technologie und Produktion im Rahmen dieses Projektes zusammenzuarbeiten.

Porozumienie to potwierdza długoterminowe plany Air Products dotyczące zakupu helu od Gazpromu.

Zamiarem Gazpromu jest rozpoczęcie w 2018 roku eksploatacji swoich największych złóż gazu ziemnego zlokalizowanych we Wschodniej Syberii oraz produkcji helu na dużą skalę ze złóż zlokalizowanych w rejonie błagowieszczeńskim. Poza intencją zakupu helu, porozumienie określa także zainteresowanie firmy Air Products współpracą z Gazpromem w ramach tego projektu w zakresie logistyki, technologii i produkcji.

Air Products Signs MOU with Gazprom for Russian Helium Project

Air Products (NYSE: APD), the global leader in helium production, continues to take actions to improve future helium supply reliability for its customers. Today Air Products announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Russia-based Gazprom Export LLC that confirms Air Products’ long-term plans to purchase helium from Gazprom.

Gazprom intends to start development of its major natural gas resources in Eastern Siberia and plans to implement large-scale helium production from the helium-rich gas feedstock in the Blagoveshchensk region beginning in 2018. Beyond the purchase of helium, the MOU also indicates Air Products’ interest in working with Gazprom on logistical, technical, and production facets of the overall project.

“Our focus on reliable helium supply to our customers is priority one for Air Products and working with Gazprom would further diversify our helium source portfolio. This MOU is the latest in a series of actions we have taken to better position ourselves in meeting increasing customer helium demand. We will continue to look for other helium source opportunities where we can participate as a buyer, an investor, and operator,” said John Van Sloun, general manager – Worldwide Helium at Air Products.

While the known supplies are sufficient to meet demand for more than 100 years, and with advances in exploration and drilling, chances are that we may find even more, this finite resource must be managed," is the message Walter Nelson, director of Helium sourcing at Air Products (NYSE: APD) delivered at the European Industrial Gas Association (EIGA) Symposium in Brussels, Belgium.

Air Products is one of the largest helium refiners in the United States and a leading supplier globally. There has been much discussion recently about the tightness in the market and the availability of helium. Nelson's presentation discussed all aspects of the helium business: where helium comes from; its uses and market demand; availability and distribution; supply shortage; and conservation and recycling efforts. Most importantly, Nelson presented the key actions necessary to maintain and increase helium supply for today and tomorrow.

The importance of an available helium supply to society is easily demonstrated by its many uses. The largest end-user market segments for helium are the health industry with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MRI manufacturing, and the semi-conductor industry. Scientific research, and traditional uses such as cutting and welding, balloons and lifting applications, diving gas mixtures and analytical and leak detection, are several other end-uses for the noble gas.

Addressing tightness in the helium market, Nelson said that we are seeing a shortage of helium supply resulting from limits in natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) production as well as some existing production plant disruptions around the globe. There are no naturally-occurring underground reservoirs of pure helium. Helium is a byproduct of natural gas production.

"The current shortage in the helium market is unprecedented. Investments by the energy sector are necessary to develop and employ helium recovery with natural gas processing where there is helium present," he said. "Not all natural gas fields are alike. Part of the decline in helium production is due to companies focusing their natural gas drilling efforts on natural gas that is rich in liquids rather than 'dry gas' which typically has more helium."

One additional key factor of looming impact to helium supply is legislation currently being considered by the United States (U.S.) Congress related to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) helium reservoir, which currently supplies 30% of the global helium demand. "U.S. legislators undoubtedly need to pass legislation soon to extend the BLM operations and preserve the availability of this important source of supply. Unless, this legislation passes and BLM has renewed authority to continue to operate the federal reservoir, all of the helium that remains in the reserve would be inaccessible. The impact on the U.S. and the world in terms of helium availability would be chaotic. Renewed or new legislation granting the BLM the authority it needs to continue to supply helium would bridge the time period necessary for new announced natural gas and helium production plants to come onstream," Nelson said.

The new sources of helium to come onstream Nelson was referring to include: a new natural gas facility to supply a new Wyoming helium plant, in which Air Products has an ownership interest; an LNG and helium project in Qatar; and additional LNG and helium production expected in Algeria. All these projects are targeted to be onstream in 2013. "Only after these three new helium sources are operational and existing plants are again running at normal rates will the global helium supply begin to fully stabilize. This is why the U.S. legislation to continue BLM supply is so critical to so many industries," Nelson said.

Nelson also touched on steps that end-users and manufacturers must take to help conserve helium at the point of use, and encouraged them to make the investments necessary to recover and recycle helium where practical.

"Provided we do all these things, and they are all attainable, we should have more than sufficient quantities of helium available for end-users and manufacturers for years to come," Nelson concluded.

Air Products presenta soluciones para hacer frente a la posible escasez en el suministro de helio

"Igual que ocurre con los combustibles fósiles, el helio es un recurso limitado. Dado que las fuentes actuales garantizan poder satisfacer la demanda de helio durante los próximos 100 años, y teniendo en cuenta que los avances en la exploración y perforación podrían llevar al encuentro de nuevas fuentes de gas, es importante saber gestionar un recurso limitado como el helio", ha afirmado Walter Nelson, director de helio en Air Products, en el simposio de la Asociación Europea de Gases Industriales (EIGA) celebrado recientemente en Bruselas.

Air Products, empresa matriz de la española Carburos Metálicos, es uno de los principales refinadores de helio en Estados Unidos y proveedor líder a nivel mundial. La intervención de Walter Nelson ha dado respuesta a las numerosas cuestiones surgidas recientemente sobre la posible escasez de helio. El responsable de Air Products en este campo ha centrado su discurso en los principales aspectos del negocio del helio, como sus fuentes de origen, usos, demanda del mercado, disponibilidad y distribución, suministro, conservación y esfuerzos de reciclaje. Asimismo, Nelson ha presentado las acciones clave que se deben llevar a cabo para mantener y aumentar el suministro de helio presente y futuro.

La importancia de contar con fuentes disponibles de helio para satisfacer las necesidades de la sociedad se hacen patentes debido a los múltiples usos de este gas. Los principales consumidores finales de helio se encuentran en la industria médica, ya que dicho gas se utiliza en la producción y proyección de resonancias magnéticas, así como en la industria de semiconductores. Otros usos que se dan actualmente a este gas noble son la investigación científica, el corte y la soldadura, aplicaciones relacionadas con globos, o mezclas de gases para buceo, análisis y detección de fugas.

En respuesta a la creciente preocupación en el mercado del helio, Nelson ha afirmado que la situación actual de escasez de helio se debe principalmente a los límites existentes en las fuentes de gas natural y en la producción de gas natural licuado, así como a las interrupciones realizadas a nivel mundial en distintas plantas de producción. La realidad es que no existen reservas subterráneas de helio puro ya que éste es un subproducto de la producción de gas natural.

"La escasez actual que vive el mercado del helio no tiene precedentes. Por este motivo son fundamentales las inversiones en el sector energético que permitan desarrollar y utilizar nuevas técnicas para recuperar el helio que se encuentra en los procesos donde se utiliza gas natural", afirmó Walter Nelson. "No todos los ámbitos del gas natural son iguales. Así, parte de la disminución en la producción de helio se debe a que los esfuerzos empleados por las compañías para obtener gas natural se centran en el propio gas natural, rico en líquidos, en lugar de hacerlo en "gases secos", que suelen contener más helio."

Un factor clave que tiene un impacto inminente en el suministro de helio es la legislación que está valorando actualmente el Congreso de los Estados Unidos, y que está relacionada con las reservas de helio de la Oficina Nacional de Gestión de Tierras (BLM). Ésta suministra actualmente el 30% de la demanda global de este gas. "Los legisladores estadounidenses necesitan aprobar lo antes posible estas leyes para poder ampliar las acciones de la Oficina Nacional de Gestión de Tierras y garantizar así la disponibilidad de esta importante fuente de suministro. Si, por el contrario, no se aprueba esta legislación y la BLM renueva su autoridad para seguir gestionando las reservas federales, todo el helio existente en la reserva permanecerá inaccesible." En palabras de Nelson, "el impacto en los Estados Unidos y en el mundo entero, en términos de disponibilidad de helio, será caótico. Una legislación renovada o nueva que conceda a la BLM la autoridad correspondiente para seguir suministrando helio permitiría contar con el periodo de tiempo necesario para encontrar las nuevas plantas de producción de gas natural y helio anunciadas."

Las nuevas fuentes de helio a las que se ha referido Nelson incluyen: nuevas instalaciones para suministrar gas natural a la planta de helio existente en el Estado de Wyoming, y de la que Air Products es propietaria; un proyecto de gas natural licuado y de helio en Qatar, y una nueva planta de producción de helio y gas natural licuado en Algeria. Se espera que todos estos proyectos estén operativos a lo largo de 2013. "Sólo después de que estas nuevas fuentes de helio estén operativas y que las plantas existentes recuperen sus niveles habituales de producción, el suministro mundial de helio empezará a estabilizarse completamente. Por este motivo es fundamental para muchos sectores que la legislación de los Estados Unidos permita a la BLM continuar suministrando helio", dijo Nelson.

Nelson también ha detallado los pasos que deben seguir tanto los fabricantes como los usuarios finales para contribuir a la conservación del helio en los puntos de uso, al tiempo que los ha animado a realizar las inversiones necesarias para recuperar y reciclar helio dónde sea posible.

"Si realizamos todas estas acciones, y todas ellas son asequibles, deberíamos contar con reservas de helio suficientes para cubrir durante los próximos años la demanda tanto de usuarios finales como de fabricantes", concluyó Nelson.

"Genau wie fossile Brennstoffe ist auch Helium eine begrenzte Ressource. Zwar reichen die bekannten Vorkommen voraussichtlich noch rund 100 Jahre und Fortschritte bei den Erkundungsmöglichkeiten erschließen möglicherweise weitere Quellen, aber dennoch ist klar, dass man den Verbrauch dieses Rohstoffes systematisch managen muss," mahnte Walter Nelson, Verantwortlicher für Heliumbeschaffung beim Industriegase Hersteller Air Products, während seines Vortrags beim Symposium der European Industrial Gases Association (EIGA) in Brüssel.

Der Industriegaseshersteller Air Products ist einer der größten Veredler von Helium in den USA und einer der führenden Lieferanten weltweit. In jüngster Zeit waren mögliche Engpässe bei der Versorgung mit Helium in aller Munde. Walter Nelson beleuchtete in seinem Vortrag alle Facetten des Marktes für Helium, wie etwa die weltweiten Vorkommen, Verwendungsgebiete und Nachfrage, Verfügbarkeit und Versorgung, Versorgungsengpässe sowie Einspar- und Recyclingmöglichkeiten. Zudem erläuterte Nelson die notwendigen Maßnahmen, um die Versorgung mit Helium auch in Zukunft sicher zu stellen.

Heliumverwendung in zahlreichen Branchen

Die Relevanz dieses Rohstoffes wird deutlich, wenn man die zahlreichen Einsatzgebiete betrachtet. Einer der größten Abnehmer ist die Gesundheitsindustrie, die Helium vor allem zur Herstellung und dem Betrieb von Magnetresonanztomographen benötigt, sowie die Halbleiterindustrie. Darüber hinaus wird Helium traditionell in der Metallverarbeitung zum Schweißen und Schneiden verwendet. Weitere Einsatzgebiete sind Ballons und Hebeinstrumente, Gasgemische für Taucher, Analyse- und Leck-Detektionsanwednungen.

Ursachen für Versorgungsengpässe

Im Hinblick auf Versorgungsengpässe im Markt für Helium nannte Nelson mehrere Ursachen, so etwa die begrenzten Produktionskapazitäten von Erdgas und Flüssigerdgas sowie Betriebsunterbrechungen an Heliumproduktionsstandorten weltweit. Hintergrund ist, dass Helium in der Natur nicht in Reinform vorkommt, sondern in der Regel als Nebenprodukt in der Erdgasproduktion anfällt.

"Der jüngsten Mangel an Helium ist beispiellos. Was notwendig wäre, sind Investitionen des Energiesektors, um die Gewinnung von Helium während der Erdgasproduktion weiter auszubauen, da hier Helium ungenutzt anfällt. Natürlich gleicht nicht jedes Erdgasfeld dem anderen. Ein Grund für den Engpass ist der Fokus vieler Unternehmen auf so genanntes ‚nasses Erdgas', wobei ‚Trockengas' üblicherweise mehr Helium enthält", erläuterte Nelson die derzeitige Situation am Heliummarkt.

Ein weiterer Einflussfaktor ist eine ausstehende Gesetzesvorlage des US-amerikanischen Kongresses. Diese bezieht sich auf das Helium-Reservoir des Bureau of Land Management (BLM), das derzeit rund 30 Prozent des weltweiten Heliumsbedarfs deckt: "Von der Verabschiedung des Gesetzes hängt der Erhalt und die Ausweitung der bereitgestellten Heliummengen ab. Falls es nicht zur Verabschiedung des Gesetzes käme, mit dem das BLM wieder über das Reservoir verfügte, stünde das dort vorgehaltene Helium nicht zur Verfügung. Die Auswirkungen auf den amerikanischen und den weltweiten Markt wären enorm. Eine Erneuerung des Gesetzes, dass dem BLM die Verfügungsrechte zusichert, würde den Zeitraum überbrücken, bis die angekündigten neuen Erdgas- und Heliumsproduktionsstätten in Betrieb genommen werden," so Nelson.

Wege zur Stabilisierung der Versorgungssituation

Bei den angekündigten neuen Produktionsstätten handelt es sich um eine Anlage in Wyoming, an der Air Products Anteile hält, sowie um Projekte zur Erdgasverflüssigung und Heliumproduktion in Qatar und Algerien, die jeweils in 2013 in Betrieb genommen werden sollen. "Erst mit dem Produktionsbeginn an diesen drei neuen Standorten und der Produktion der ursprünglichen Kapazitätsmengen an den bestehenden Standorten wird sich die weltweite Versorgungssituation stabilisieren. Aus diesem Grund ist die ausstehende Entscheidung zum Helium-Reservoir des BLM ein so wichtiger Faktor für zahlreiche Industrien," erklärte Nelson.

Nelson sprach zudem die Rolle der Verbraucher und Industrieabnehmer an, die ebenfalls einen Beitrag zu Einsparungen von Helium leisten könnten. Er ermutigte diese, in entsprechende Maßnahmen zur Einsparung und dem Recycling von Helium zu investieren, falls dies technisch und vom Betriebsablauf sinnvoll realisierbar sei: "Vorausgesetzt, wir setzen all dies um, wäre Helium für Anwender und die Industrie auf lange Zeit in ausreichender Menge verfügbar," sagte Nelson abschließend.

Air Products pleit voor zorgvuldige omgang met beschikbaar helium

Net als bij de fossiele brandstoffen is de wereldwijde voorraad helium beperkt. "Hoewel de nu bekende voorraden toereikend zijn om aan de vraag in de komende honderd jaar te voldoen en we dankzij nieuwe technologieën voor winning en exploratie waarschijnlijk nog wel op nieuwe voorraden zullen stuiten, moet de beschikbare hoeveelheid helium wel goed worden beheerd", zei Walter Nelson tijdens een symposium van de European Industrial Gas Association (EIGA) afgelopen week in Brussel. Nelson is verantwoordelijk voor de helium-activiteiten van Air Products.

Air Products is een van de grootste producenten van helium in Amerika en wereldwijd een van de belangrijkste leveranciers. Er is al enige tijd veel discussie over de krappe markt en de beschikbaarheid van helium. In zijn presentatie ging Nelson in op alle aspecten van de handel in helium: waar helium vandaan komt; hoe de vraag zich ontwikkelt en waarvoor het edelgas gebruikt wordt; de beschikbaarheid en de distributie; het tekort aan helium en de pogingen die ondernomen worden om zo zuinig mogelijk met het gas om te gaan en waar mogelijk te recyclen. Nelson behandelde echter ook de belangrijkste maatregelen die genomen moeten worden om de productie en levering van helium nu en in de komende jaren op peil te houden.

Het belang van een goede beschikbaarheid van helium voor de maatschappij kan eenvoudig toegelicht worden door een opsomming van de gebruiksdoeleinden. De belangrijkste afzetmarkt voor helium is de gezondheidszorg, waar het gas wordt toegepast in MRI-scanners en bij de productie van MRI-apparatuur. Ook in de semi-conductor industrie wordt helium veel gebruikt. Andere markten zijn wetenschappelijk onderzoek, analyse, lekdetectie en traditionele toepassingen als lasersnijden, lassen, ballonnen en gasmengsels voor duikers.

Nelson vertelde dat het tekort op de heliummarkt vooral te wijten is aan de daling van de productie van aardgas en liquefied natural gas (LNG), maar ook omdat wereldwijd verschillende fabrieken stilgelegd zijn, waar helium geproduceerd werd. Er bestaan geen ondergrondse voorraden van puur helium; helium wordt gewonnen als bijproduct bij de productie van aardgas.

"Het huidige tekort aan helium is zonder precedent", merkte Nelson op. "Energiebedrijven moeten bij de winning van aardgas investeren in de productie van helium om de levering van helium op gang te houden en zelfs uit te breiden. Dat kan niet altijd, want niet alle gasvelden zijn hetzelfde. Een deel van de daling in de productie van helium is te wijten aan het feit dat de gasbedrijven zich bij de winning van aardgas nu vooral richten op 'nat' aardgas, dat rijk is aan hogere koolwaterstoffen en dat eerder vloeibaar wordt. 'Droog' gas dat over het algemeen meer helium bevat, bestaat met name uit methaan en ethaan en is uit commercieel oogpunt minder interessant.

Een ander belangrijk aspect, dat een negatieve impact op de wereldwijde levering van helium kan hebben, is wetgeving waarover momenteel in de USA wordt gesproken. Die heeft betrekking op het heliumreservoir dat nu nog onder beheer van het Bureau of Land Management (BLM) valt en dat momenteel 30 procent van alle helium ter wereld levert. Nelson: "De USA zou de BLM moeten toestaan zijn activiteiten uit te breiden, waardoor helium uit deze belangrijke bron beschikbaar blijft. Als dat niet gebeurt en de BLM geen toestemming krijgt om die federale reserves aan te spreken, dan bestaat de kans dat die voorraad ontoegankelijk wordt. De gevolgen voor de beschikbaarheid van helium in Amerika en de rest van de wereld zullen enorm zijn en tot chaos leiden. Wetgeving, die BLM in staat stelt om helium te blijven leveren, betekent een goede overbrugging van de periode tot de ingebruikname van enkele nieuwe productiefaciliteiten voor aardgas en helium."

De nieuwe productielocaties, waar Nelson op doelde, zijn bijvoorbeeld een nieuwe aardgas productiefaciliteit die levert aan een heliumfabriek in Wyoming, waarin Air Products zelf een belang heeft; een LNG- en heliumproject in Qatar en nieuwe productiefaciliteiten voor LNG en helium die in Algerije in aanbouw zijn. Al deze projecten worden naar verwachting dit jaar operationeel. "Alleen als deze drie nieuwe productiefaciliteiten voor helium operationeel zijn en de bestaande fabrieken weer normaal werken, zal de wereldwijde levering van helium weer stabiliseren. De wetgeving om BLM in staat te stellen helium te blijven leveren, is cruciaal voor vele bedrijfstakken", benadrukte Nelson.

Nelson ging ook kort in op de maatregelen die gebruikers en producenten kunnen nemen om het verbruik van helium te beperken en moedigde hen aan om investeringen te doen om helium terug te winnen en te recyclen, waar dat praktisch mogelijk is. "Stel dat we al die maatregelen kunnen treffen en dat ze allemaal het gewenste effect hebben, dan hebben we voor de komende jaren voldoende helium voor alle eindgebruikers en fabrikanten", was Walter Nelson's conclusie.

« A l'instar des carburants fossiles, l'hélium est une ressource limitée. Même si les sources d'approvisionnement connues sont suffisantes pour satisfaire la demande pendant plus de 100 ans, et bien qu'il y ait des chances que l'on en trouve encore plus avec les progrès réalisés en exploration et forage, cette ressource limitée doit être intelligemment gérée ». Voilà le message délivré par Walter Nelson- Directeur de l'approvisionnement en Hélium d'Air Products – durant le Symposium de l'EIGA (Association Européenne des Gaz Industriels), à Bruxelles (Belgique).

Air Products est l'un des plus importants raffineurs d'hélium aux Etats-Unis et un fournisseur de premier plan à l'échelle mondiale. Il y a eu beaucoup de discussions récemment sur l'étroitesse du marché et la disponibilité de l'hélium. La présentation de Nelson a couvert tous les aspects de l'activité hélium : sa provenance, ses applications et la demande du marché, sa disponibilité et sa distribution, la pénurie et les efforts de conservation et de recyclage. Plus important, Nelson a également listé les actions clés nécessaires au maintien et à l'augmentation de la fourniture d'Hélium aujourd'hui et demain.

L'importance de pouvoir disposer d'une fourniture d'hélium dans notre société est facile à démontrer; il suffit d'énumérer ses différents usages. Les débouchés les plus importants pour ce gaz sont l'industrie de la santé avec l'imagerie par résonnance magnétique (IRM) et les producteurs d'IRM ainsi que l'industrie des semi-conducteurs. La recherche scientifique et des utilisations classiques comme le coupage et le soudage, les ballons et les applications d'élévation, les mélanges gazeux pour la plongée et l'analyse comme la détection de fuite comptent parmi les autres utilisations finales de ce noble gaz.

Evoquant l'étroitesse du marché de l'hélium, Nelson a déclaré que la pénurie observée résultait d'une production limitée de gaz naturel et de Gaz Naturel Liquéfié (GNL) ainsi que des arrêts de production de certaines usines actuellement en service dans le monde. Il n'existe pas de réservoirs souterrains d'hélium pur d'origine naturelle. L'hélium est un sous-produit de la production de gaz naturel.

« La pénurie actuelle sur le marché de l'hélium est sans précédent. Des investissements par le secteur de l'énergie sont nécessaires pour développer et récupérer de l'hélium dans le cadre de la production de gaz naturel quand cela est possible », a-t-il ajouté. « Aucun champs de gaz naturel n'est similaire. Une partie du déclin de la production d'hélium est imputable aux sociétés qui concentrent leurs efforts de forage sur du gaz naturel riche en liquides plutôt que sur du « gaz sec » qui contient typiquement plus d'hélium ».

Un autre facteur clé menaçant la production d'hélium est la législation même, notamment américaine. Aux Etats-Unis, les réserves d'hélium sont gérées par le Bureau of Land Management (BLM), qui fournit aujourd'hui 30% de l'hélium mondial.. « Les législateurs américains ont incontestablement besoin de faire passer rapidement une réglementation étendant les opérations du BLM afin de préserver la disponibilité de cette importance source d'approvisionnement. Si la loi n'est pas votée et que le BLM ne voit pas son autorisation renouvelée pour continuer à gérer le réservoir fédéral, l'hélium encore en réserve deviendra inaccessible. L'impact sur les Etats-Unis, et le monde en termes de disponibilité d'hélium serait chaotique. Une nouvelle législation autorisant le BLM a continuer à fournir de l'hélium permettrait d'assurer les livraisons jusqu'à ce que les nouvelles usines de production d'hélium et de gaz naturel annoncées entrent en service», conclut Nelson.

Par "nouvelles usines de production", on entend une nouvelle usine de gaz naturel pour approvisionner une nouvelle usine d'hélium dans le Wyoming (et dans laquelle Air Products détient des parts) ; un projet Gaz Naturel et Hélium au Qatar et un autre site de production de GNL et d'hélium en Algérie. Tous ces sites devraient être opérationnels en 2013.

« L'approvisionnement mondial d'hélium ne commencera à se stabiliser réellement que lorsque ces trois nouvelles sources d'hélium seront opérationnelles et fonctionneront à plein régime. C'est pourquoi il est crucial pour tant d'industries que la réglementation américaine maintienne la fourniture par le BLM », complète Nelson.

Nelson a également évoqué le fait que les utilisateurs finaux et les industriels doivent contribuer à conserver l'hélium à son point d'utilisation et il les encourage à faire les investissements nécessaires pour récupérer et recycler l'hélium dès que cela est possible.

« Sous réserve que nous prenions toutes ces mesures, et c'est faisable, nous devrions avoir des quantités plus que suffisantes d'hélium disponibles pour les consommateurs finaux et les industriels pour les années à venir », conclut-il.

Air Products’ Helium Director Talks Market Supply Solutions at EIGA

“Like fossil fuels, helium is a finite resource. While the known supplies are sufficient to meet demand for more than 100 years, and with advances in exploration and drilling, chances are that we may find even more, this finite resource must be managed,” is the message Walter Nelson, director of Helium sourcing at Air Products (NYSE: APD) delivered today at the European Industrial Gas Association (EIGA) Symposium in Brussels, Belgium.

Air Products is one of the largest helium refiners in the United States and a leading supplier globally. There has been much discussion recently about the tightness in the market and the availability of helium. Nelson’s presentation discussed all aspects of the helium business: where helium comes from; its uses and market demand; availability and distribution; supply shortage; and conservation and recycling efforts. Most importantly, Nelson presented the key actions necessary to maintain and increase helium supply for today and tomorrow.

The importance of an available helium supply to society is easily demonstrated by its many uses. The largest end-user market segments for helium are the health industry with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MRI manufacturing, and the semiconductor industry. Scientific research, and traditional uses such as cutting and welding, balloons and lifting applications, diving gas mixtures and analytical and leak detection, are several other end-uses for the noble gas.

Addressing tightness in the helium market, Nelson said that we are seeing a shortage of helium supply resulting from limits in natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) production as well as some existing production plant disruptions around the globe. There are no naturally-occurring underground reservoirs of pure helium. Helium is a byproduct of natural gas production.

“The current shortage in the helium market is unprecedented. Investments by the energy sector are necessary to develop and employ helium recovery with natural gas processing where there is helium present,” he said. “Not all natural gas fields are alike. Part of the decline in helium production is due to companies focusing their natural gas drilling efforts on natural gas that is rich in liquids rather than ‘dry gas’ which typically has more helium.”

One additional key factor of looming impact to helium supply is legislation currently being considered by the United States (U.S.) Congress related to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) helium reservoir, which currently supplies 30% of the global helium demand. “U.S. legislators undoubtedly need to pass legislation soon to extend the BLM operations and preserve the availability of this important source of supply. Unless, this legislation passes and BLM has renewed authority to continue to operate the federal reservoir, all of the helium that remains in the reserve would be inaccessible. The impact on the U.S. and the world in terms of helium availability would be chaotic. Renewed or new legislation granting the BLM the authority it needs to continue to supply helium would bridge the time period necessary for new announced natural gas and helium production plants to come onstream,” Nelson said.

The new sources of helium to come onstream Nelson was referring to include: a new natural gas facility to supply a new Wyoming helium plant, in which Air Products has an ownership interest; an LNG and helium project in Qatar; and additional LNG and helium production expected in Algeria. All these projects are targeted to be onstream in 2013. “Only after these three new helium sources are operational and existing plants are again running at normal rates will the global helium supply begin to fully stabilize. This is why the U.S. legislation to continue BLM supply is so critical to so many industries,” Nelson said.

Nelson also touched on steps that end-users and manufacturers must take to help conserve helium at the point of use, and encouraged them to make the investments necessary to recover and recycle helium where practical.

“Provided we do all these things, and they are all attainable, we should have more than sufficient quantities of helium available for end-users and manufacturers for years to come,” Nelson concluded.

Air Products stellt deutschlandweit auf 300 bar Integra® Gasflaschen für Sauerstoff um

Air Products bietet ab sofort die Integra Gasflasche für Sauerstoff mit einem Druck von 300 bar an. Bisher war die Integra Gasflasche in Nord- und Westdeutschland lediglich mit einem Druck von 200 bar erhältlich. Im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen 50-Liter-Gasflaschen mit 200 bar Befüllungsdruck, ist die 30-Liter-Integra-Gasflasche bei gleichem Inhalt generell kleiner, etwa 23 Prozent leichter und standfester. Damit einhergehend erhöht sich bei der Integra Gasflasche die Gesamtsicherheit des Gasehandlings.

Integra Gasflaschen verfügen neben einer Füllstandsanzeige über einen integrierten Druckminderer, wodurch ein zusätzlicher Kauf oder etwaige Reparaturen wegfallen. Eine fest eingebaute Schutzkappe für das Ventil und den Druckminderer erhöhen die Sicherheit beim Handling. Ein Schnellverschluss erleichtert zudem die Verbindung zu den jeweiligen Anwendungen der Gase, da keine Werkzeuge notwendig sind.

Air Products Completes Acquisition of CryoService Limited

Air Products (NYSE:APD) today announced it has completed the acquisition of the UK company CryoService Limited, which will now be known as Air Products CryoEase® Services.

This acquisition follows an initial 25 per cent stake in CryoService that Air Products purchased in 1998 and subsequent majority shareholding the company acquired in 2008. For over a decade both businesses have operated in partnership to supply cryogenic and specialist gases to customer's in science, leisure and general industry.

Air Products vient d'annoncer qu'il avait finalisé l'acquisition de la société britannique CryoService Limited qui portera désormais le nom d'Air Products CryoEase® Services.

Ce rachat fait suite à une première prise de participation de 25% de CryoService effectuée en 1998 par Air Products , suivie d'une prise de participation majoritaire en 2008. Depuis plus d'une décennie, les deux entités travaillent en partenariat pour approvisionner en gaz cryogéniques et gaz spéciaux leurs clients scientifiques, professionnels des loisirs ou de l'industrie générale.

« Le service client, l'innovation et la gestion technique ont toujours été prioritaires pour CryoService et sont en parfaite adéquation avec l'activité d'Air Products », a commenté Ivo Bols, Vice Président et Directeur général d'Air Products pour les Gaz marchands en Europe. « Cette acquisition démontre bien la stratégie d'Air Products : fonctionner comme un producteur de gaz industriels intégré pour optimiser croissance et rentabilité. Imaginé pour les clients qui consomment mensuellement entre 100 m3 (10 bouteilles) et 3 000 m3 d'un seul produit (azote, argon ou oxygène), ce service exclusif comprend la location d'un petit réservoir de gaz liquide sur leur site, directement connecté aux équipements de production, en service 24h sur 24, 7 j/7 et ré-approvisionnable automatiquement.

Après une étude gratuite du site et de ses applications afin de valider le choix de la solution CryoEase® et de déterminer la taille du réservoir (de 230 à 2000 litres), ce dernier est installé rapidement, sans travaux de génie civil ou branchement électrique. Le service CryoEase® supprime toute manutention et manipulation de cadres et bouteilles. Le gaz est directement connecté au point d'utilisation réduisant du même coup l'exposition aux gaz pressurisés. La suppression des connexions et déconnexions des bouteilles garantit quant à elle une absence de pollution éventuelle du réseau de distribution du gaz lors des changements d'emballages.

Le client voit sa procédure administrative allégée et ne paie que le gaz qu'il utilise puisque les pertes résiduelles inévitables avec les bouteilles ne sont plus à l'ordre du jour. Finies les zones de stockage séparées pour les bouteilles de gaz vides et les pleines : l'empreinte au sol d'un réservoir de 1000 l de produit liquide est de 1m x 1m, soit l'équivalent en capacité de 7 cadres environ (ou 70 B 50) qui occuperaient 6 m2 au sol !

CryoService ist spezialisiert auf die Gasversorgung von Unternehmen, die kleinere Volumina benötigen und über die Befüllung von Kleintanks versorgt werden. Effective January 1, 2012, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will be implementing a price increase for liquid and bulk helium gases in North America. Specific adjustments are being communicated directly to customers.

The price increase is the result of several factors. The global helium market continues to experience severe shortages in the supply needed to meet the world’s growing demand. The industry-wide shortage has made it increasingly difficult to maintain Air Products’ global system for meeting customer requirements, and unfortunately this situation is expected to continue well into the future. Effective September 1, 2011, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will be implementing a price increase of 15 percent for liquid and bulk helium gases in North America.

The pricing adjustment is the result of several factors including the continued strong demand over the past year for helium and significant reductions in supply. The helium market has been tight across the globe with product allocations implemented by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and with many other global helium sources producing below capacity. Additionally, new helium sources located primarily outside of the U.S. are extremely expensive, wholesale prices for crude and processed liquid helium have increased, and costs have escalated for power and diesel.

Air Products’ worldwide helium team is managing this difficult situation on a daily basis so that it can continue to bring uninterruptible supply to customers. It is expected that demand will exceed supply for the next two to three years, thus creating ongoing shortages in the market.

Carburos Metálicos trae la nieve a la ciudad de Barcelona

Carburos Metálicos, grupo Air Products, ha sido la empresa encargada de proporcionar el nitrógeno líquido necesario para fabricar la nieve utilizada en la primera edición del Barcelona Snow Show, una competición internacional de snowboard y esquí freestyle en la modalidad de Big Air (saltos).

El nitrógeno líquido es un gas imprescindible en la creación de nieve. Mediante aire comprimido el agua se atomiza y los copos de nieve se congelan con este gas.

Todo ello se lleva a cabo dentro de una tienda especial instalada en la pista de esquí. Gracias a ella se controla la atmósfera y así se posibilita una correcta formación de la nieve. Además, en esta tienda se evita la concurrencia de diversos factores que podrían afectar a la forma y medida de los copos, como son el incremento de la temperatura, las corrientes de aire así como el control de la humedad.

En el caso de la Barcelona Snow Show que se celebró en el estadio Olímpico Lluís Companys de Barcelona, Carburos Metálicos tuvo que proporcionar nitrógeno para poder cubrir con nieve una rampa de 35 metros de altura y 112 metros de longitud, la más alta realizada en Europa hasta la fecha para una prueba de Copa del Mundo de Snowboard.

Effective October 1, 2009, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE:APD) will increase pricing and monthly service charges as follows for merchant customers in North America for the following products:

liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid argon, liquid and bulk hydrogen by 4% to 8%; and
liquid and bulk helium by 5% to 10%.

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

This pricing initiative is in response to higher operating costs related to running plants with significantly lower product demand, in addition to both higher energy costs and overall increases associated with the production and distribution of merchant gas products.

Air Products Launches New Balloonium® Delivery Service

Air Products is launching a new dedicated Balloonium® delivery service for party and event organisers and specialist retailers in the London area. Operating within the M25, the new service will deliver lightweight helium cylinders directly to the customer’s doorstep, as and when they are needed.

Gestiegene Dieselpreise

Laut Statistischem Bundesamt erreichten die Dieselpreise bei Abgabe an Großverbraucher im November 2007 ihren historischen Höchstwert von 103,96 EUR pro 100 Liter. Im Jahresvergleich (Dezember 2006 - Dezember 2007) stiegen die Dieselpreise sogar um 18,2% von 87,62 EUR auf 103,56 EUR pro 100 l.

Erhöhte Mautgebühren

Die Mautgebühren wurden zum 1. September 2007 um 8,9% von durchschnittlich 12,4 Cent auf 13,5 Cent pro Kilometer angehoben. Darüber hinaus hat das Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Bau und Stadtentwicklung (BMVBS) bereits jetzt die nächste Mauterhöhung zum 1. Oktober 2008 um bis zu 52% je nach Emissionsklasse angekündigt.

Reduzierung der Arbeitszeiten für Kraftfahrer

Seit April 2007 dürfen Kraftfahrer laut Arbeitszeitgesetz nur noch maximal 48 anstelle der bisherigen 60 Stunden pro Woche arbeiten. Diese Neuregelung stellt eine erhebliche Kostenbelastung dar, da der verkürzte Arbeitszeitrahmen zusätzliches Fahrerpersonal erfordert.

Selbst ständige Prozessoptimierungen und Rationalisierungsmaßnahmen können diese zusätzlichen Belastungen nicht völlig kompensieren. Wir sehen uns deshalb gezwungen, Teile dieser Kostensteigerungen an unsere Kunde weiterzugeben und den GGVS/Mautsatz für unsere tiefkalten verflüssigten Gase (Sauerstoff, Stickstoff und Argon) sowie für Wasserstoff anzupassen.

Air Products and Matheson Tri-Gas to Form Joint Venture to Build and Operate New Wyoming Helium Plant

Air Products (NYSE: APD) and Matheson Tri-Gas, Inc., a member of the Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (TNSC) group, today announced their intention to jointly build and operate a liquid helium production plant near Big Piney, Wyoming. The plant, designed to produce 200 million standard cubic feet per year at start-up, with expectations for future capacity expansion, would process crude helium produced by a natural gas processing facility that would be owned by Cimarex Energy Co. (NYSE: XEC) and their partner, Riley Ridge LLC.

The Cimarex facility would process natural gas from the Riley Ridge Field in Wyoming, the second largest helium-rich natural gas field in the United States. Riley Ridge is believed to contain sufficient helium reserves to support production for decades. Production at the new Wyoming plant is anticipated to commence in 2009.

Air Products, the global leader in helium production, has pioneered many of the helium extraction, production, distribution and storage technologies used in the industry today. Air Products maintains the world’s largest helium production and distribution system and operates numerous facilities around the world.

TNSC is the leading helium supplier in Japan, and is one of only six industrial gas companies in the world with direct access to helium sources.

“Taiyo Nippon Sanso purchased a ‘sold out’ helium business from Linde with limited ability to grow. Helium from the Riley Ridge Project will improve our ability to supply existing customers and provide the opportunity to grow the business beginning in 2009. Upon completion, the Wyoming helium production plant will be the 10th liquid helium plant operating in the United States, and the first new U.S. facility since 2000. It is expected to employ approximately 8-10 people after start-up.

Air Products Reaches Microbulk Solutions Milestone with 10,000th Installation

Air Products (NYSE: APD) achieved a milestone in May with the 10,000th customer installation of its innovative Microbulk Solutions for small volume industrial gas customers. The installation of Microbulk Solutions at a customer manufacturing facility located in Georgia marked the achievement of the global product offering first introduced in the United States in 2005, and offered in Europe prior to 1990. Microbulk Solutions is a novel gas supply and services option that provides the most technically-advanced and cost-effective alternative to traditional cylinder gas packaging in the marketplace.

“Microbulk delivery service and on-site storage and blending systems are very popular and have reached the 10,000th installation because the offering brings the advantages of bulk supply to operations with less than traditional bulk delivery volumes. At the 10,000th installation, Microbulk was the answer for our customer’s argon needs for vacuum furnaces. Květen 2007 — V pátek 18. května 2007 proběhlo v Písku vyhlášení ankety o nejlepšího lyžaře Král bílé stopy, spojené se slavnostním ukončením sportovní kariéry Kateřiny Neumannové. Její poslední „trasa“ vedla přes celou délku nejstaršího mostu v Čechách, kde byla vytvořena 120 metrů dlouhá běžecká stopa.

Most byl zasněžen technickým sněhem (obchodní značka PolarSnow), jehož výrobu zajišťovaly společnosti Polar Technologies International a Air Products, které tento produkt společně vyvinuly. Patentovaná technologie výroby sněhu PolarSnow spočívá v „imitaci přírody“ – sníh je vyroben pouze za použití vody, stlačeného vzduchu a vysoce chladného kapalného dusíku (-196°C), neo bsahuje tedy žádné chemikálie. V tom spočívá jeho hlavní přednost, neboť nabízí všechny vlastnosti pravého sněhu. Mezi jeho další výhody patří zejména rychlost výroby (50m³/h) a jeho stabilita v čase – i v případě vysokých teplot vydrží minimálně 24hodin.

PolarSnow tak může být vyroben kdykoli a na jakémkoli místě, ať v saharském vedru nebo mírně vlhkém prostředí pražského parku. Může být produkován ve velkém objemu a v jakékoli požadované kvalitě: od dokonalého „prašanu“ na lyžování a snowboarding až po zledovatělou „břečku“ vhodnou k testování pneumatik. Je ideální pro první zasněžování lyžařských hal, skokanských můstků a různých typů sáňkařských ramp, vytváření zimních kulis pro filmové produkce nebo reklamní akce apod.

Air Products Completes Purchase of BOC Gazy from Linde

Air Products (NYSE:APD) announced today that it has completed the acquisition of the industrial gas business of BOC Gazy Sp z o.o. from The Linde Group for 370 million euros or about $503 million. With this transaction, Air Products is now the leading industrial gas supplier in Central Europe’s fastest growing economy.

Air Products announced on January 8 its intention to acquire the BOC Gazy business and has since received clearance from the European and Polish regulatory authorities.

The business, headquartered in Warsaw, has approximately 750 employees, five major industrial gas plants and six cylinder transfill facilities serving customers across a diverse range of industries, including chemicals, steel and base metals, among others. Combined with Air Products’ existing Polish business, 2006 sales were about 140 million euros or about $190 million.

Air Products Announces Surcharge for U.S. Merchant Customers

Air Products (NYSE:APD) announced today that it is increasing nationwide surcharges on its liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen products starting June 1, 2006. The surcharges are required to recover increased distribution costs such as purchased transportation and diesel fuel.
