Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced it has signed a long-term contract with Henan Xinlianxin Fertilizer (Xinlianxin) and will build, own and operate an air separation unit (ASU) and integrated gas liquefier in Henan Province, China. The ASU will produce approximately 2,000 tons per day (TPD) of gaseous oxygen for Xinlianxin’s expanding fertilizer plant in Xinxiang. The liquefier will produce over 250 TPD of liquid products, namely oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, for the region’s growing merchant gases market. The Air Products ASU and liquefier are to be onstream in 2013.

“We are pleased to be supplying Xinlianxin’s tonnage industrial gas needs for its fertilizer plant expansion. Our ASU product offering of this specific size was the right solution for the customer’s needs. This is the first time Xinlianxin has contracted with a third-party to supply industrial gases, and we are honored by that trust,” said Steve Jones, Air Products’ China president. “From a merchant gases opportunity, this location meets Air Products’ strategic goals in two ways. First, the facility’s liquefier piggybacks on the ASU location to provide for integrated and efficient production of liquid gas products. Secondly, it will make Air Products the first global industrial gas producer in this market. The location is within a key region that Air Products believes will grow in industry segments we already serve globally including chemicals, electronics, fabrication and glass.”

“Air Products’ investment in Xinxiang brings a long-term and strategic partnership with Xinlianxin,” said Liu Xingxu, chairman and general manager of Xinlianxin. “The collaboration will help Xinlianxin to improve efficiency, reduce cost and sharpen its competitiveness. It is a win-win deal for both companies.”

The ASU train will include design enhancements to minimize operating costs through energy efficiency. Technology advancements and other productivity improvements support Air Products’ overall sustainability goals of reducing energy consumption and emissions. “Our goal is always to provide our worldwide customers with the lowest cost and newest advanced technology ASU facilities which offer energy efficiencies that benefit their production operations and the environment,” said Jones, a member of the company’s Corporate Executive Committee who is based in Shanghai as part of Air Products’ corporate strategy to support significant growth opportunities and accelerate the company’s development in emerging markets.

Air Products will also locate a liquid bulk terminal facility at this location to serve the varied liquid gas merchant customers in the region.

Xinlianxin is the largest fertilizer producer in Henan Province and the fourth largest coal based urea producer in China. Xinlianxin is a producer of urea, methanol and compound fertilizer using coal as a feedstock. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of China XLX Fertilizer Ltd., a Singapore-registered company listed on both the Singapore Stock Exchange (stock code: B9R.SI) and the main board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (stock code: 01866.HK).

Today’s China contract award news follows Air Products’ December 2011 announcement of a long-term contract for the largest single on-site ASU ever awarded to an industrial gas company. The facility, to be built, owned and operated by Air Products for Shaanxi Future Energy Chemical Co., Ltd., will be located in Yulin, Shaanxi Province, China. Visit www.airproducts.com/chemshow for a short preview.

Among Air Products’ featured offerings are:

The PRISM® Hydrogen Generator for cost-effective and reliable on-site generation of volumes from 2,000 scfh up to more than 10,000 scfh. Based on advanced proprietary technology, PRISM hydrogen generators are the most efficient generators on the market today, having the highest turn down and consuming the least amount of natural gas. These generators provide a consistent supply of high-purity hydrogen for a wide variety of applications not only in chemical processing, but also in metals treatment, steel, glass, photovoltaic, food, power generation and hydrogen fueling industries.

The Cryogenic Hydrogen Compressor (CHC), which is a proprietary liquid hydrogen supply system that instantly matches changing production needs, resulting in reduced operating costs and minimum downtime. Designed for industrial producers requiring high-pressure hydrogen, such as chemical and refinery manufacturers, the unique CHC technology is load-following, which means its output closely matches process demand patterns. While running continuously, the system supplies the flow rate needed by the process at any given time, helping to minimize vent losses in the system and making the technology more efficient than traditional liquid hydrogen pumps.

The PolarFit™ Ultra-Fine-Grinding Mill for cost-effective reduction of hard-to-grind materials to smaller particle sizes than can be achieved with conventional impact mills. This unique grinding system uses a combination of size reduction mechanisms―including impact, attrition and particle-particle collision―to generate consistent yields of particles between 45 and 240 microns, and in some cases as small as 10 microns. The mill is ideal for cryogenic size reduction of a wide range of materials, including pigments, plastics, powder coatings, thermoplastic elastomers, waxes, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, spices and other food products.

A propos d’Air Products :

A propos d’Air Products :
Air Products (NYSE: APD), the leading global hydrogen provider, today announced it has strengthened its U.S. Gulf Coast hydrogen pipeline network in Louisiana with the successful completion of a 37-mile extension to the system. The new portion of the hydrogen network, much of which was placed in the lake-bed of Lake Pontchartrain, links Air Products’ existing pipeline systems on both sides of the lake. The new extension creates a more than 150 mile continuous hydrogen pipeline network from the city of Plaquemine to Chalmette, with 15 hydrogen production source points feeding the system including recently announced hydrogen plants being built in Garyville and Baton Rouge.

“This extension enhances our Gulf Coast hydrogen leadership position. The new connection increases the supply reliability of our pipeline network in Louisiana and continues to build upon our multi-source hydrogen system, which will soon have over 650 MMSCFD (million standard cubic feet) of capacity. This project demonstrates our commitment to safe, robust and reliable supply of hydrogen to the refinery and petrochemical industry in Louisiana,” said Tom Wendahl, manager – Tonnage Business, East Gulf Coast Area for Air Products. The newly expanded system also enhances supply reliability and efficiency to Air Products’ own liquid hydrogen production operations in New Orleans. Product from this plant, the largest liquid hydrogen facility in the world, is distributed by tanker truck to hundreds of customers across North America, including Kennedy Space Center for every launch of the Space Shuttle.

“A safe, reliable and cost-effective supply of hydrogen is critical to maintaining and creating jobs in the refining and chemical sectors of the Louisiana economy. I congratulate Air Products on the successful completion of this project,” said Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Stephen Moret.

Wendahl noted pipeline construction and permitting on the newest addition to the system went very smoothly in working with local authorities and regulators, as well as property neighbors in the area of the pipeline. “We worked very closely with all stakeholders and the project was novel in that the pipeline used an existing pipeline corridor in Lake Pontchartrain. That alone decreased potential environmental impact and landowner issues,” he said.

Additionally, in the U.S. Gulf Coast, Air Products has a second and larger hydrogen pipeline system of over 300 miles reaching from the Houston Ship Channel in Texas to Lake Charles, Louisiana. Air Products has safely operated hydrogen pipelines for over 35 years and incorporates a design philosophy based on 100 years of continuous safe operation. The company’s pipeline design and operations meet or exceed government requirements. For example, as a safety precaution, Air Products pioneered the use of automatic shut-off valves on pipelines which act to isolate line segments in the unlikely event of a system breach.

Air Products also has hydrogen pipeline networks operating around the world in the U.S. in Southern California, in Sarnia, Ontario, and Edmonton, Alberta in Canada, and in Rotterdam in The Netherlands.

Air Products (NYSE:APD) serves customers in industrial, energy, technology and healthcare markets worldwide with a unique portfolio of atmospheric gases, process and specialty gases, performance materials, and equipment and services. It is the largest CO coldbox and the largest workshop-built CO coldbox that Air Products has ever constructed for its customers globally. A completion ceremony was held today at the Caojing Manufacturing Facility.

Weighing over 300 tons and measuring over 70,000 cubic feet, the CO coldbox for Yangzi Petrochemical was designed with Air Products world class cryogenic technologies. It was completely manufactured at the Caojing Manufacturing Facility in Shanghai, one of Air Products’ three global manufacturing centers to build various types of industrial gas separation equipment. Building coldboxes in the workshop increases safety, reliability, and quality of the manufacturing process, and hence the equipment quality.

“The Caojing Manufacturing Facility is part of Air Products’ strategic business blueprint to serve our customers in China and Asia with local manufacturing capabilities by bringing our world class technologies and standards to the region,” said Li Bing, general manager of Air Products’ Caojing Manufacturing Facility. “We have already built many oxygen and nitrogen coldboxes for our customers throughout Asia. The CO coldbox for Yangzi Petrochemical is a new milestone for us in scale, scope and technologies.”

The coldbox will produce over 300,000 tons per year of CO and will be used in the 500,000 ton per year acetic acid factory of Yangzi Petrochemical. In addition to CO, the coldbox will produce hydrogen and syngas, a mix of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, to produce methanol, fuel, acetic acid and other products. Acetic acid is a basic chemical used in paints, adhesives, plastic bottles, foods, construction materials and hundreds of other consumer products.

Air Products will ship the CO coldbox via the Yangtze River and work with Yangzi Petrochemical for the road transportation to deliver the coldbox to its facility at the Nanjing Petrochemical Complex in Jiangsu Province, a journey totaling over 150 miles from Shanghai. The new facility will increase Air Products' membrane output by over 50 percent. It will provide for state-of-the-art hollow fiber production and module assembly technology across the full range of multiple PRISM membrane offerings. The new plant is to be on-stream in early 2010.

"This new facility will ensure our ability to meet the strong demand for high performance membranes. Membrane technology is being used increasingly in new and growing applications, and we will be positioned to meet that need with facilities capable of producing multiple size membrane product offerings," said George Lewis, global business manager, Equipment Sales at Air Products. Air Products will continue to operate its current PRISM® membrane production plant in St. Louis, which opened in 1984 and was expanded several times, most recently in 2007. "Locating near our existing facility will allow us to leverage our skilled workforce and know-how to bring the facility into full production more quickly and efficiently. We appreciate the support of both the City of St. Charles and the Missouri Department of Economic Development in helping to make this project a reality," Lewis added.

Membrane technology is used to separate and purify gases. Membrane modules contain thousands of hollow fibers to provide high processing capacity in a compact unit. Membranes are often used to produce nitrogen from compressed air; for hydrogen recovery and purification; for ratio adjustment to balance a mix of gases; air and gas dehydration to remove water, which can impact compressed gas performance; and natural gas treatment for removal of impurities. "The ability for membranes to separate gases by taking advantage of the differing permeability and solubility rates in feed gases, and do so in a highly reliable lightweight system, with few moving parts and to be able to operate in constrained spaces, makes membrane technology attractive for many applications," said Lewis.

Nitrogen membrane demand is driven by product needs from the chemical production, food processing, liquefied natural gas, oil and gas, transportation and mining industries. Hydrogen membranes are used in chemical, refining, and biofuels processes. Dehydration membranes are used in compressed air systems and for high pressure requirements such as for natural gas dehydration. Air Products' PRISM membranes have been used to produce gases to inert fuel tanks aboard aircraft, for use in coal mine methane recovery operations in China, to enrich oxygen for passengers on the world's longest and highest highland railway, the Qinghai-Tibet railway, and to produce nitrogen for blanketing chemical, methanol and liquefied gas shipments around the globe.

Air Products' PRISM line of gas generation systems supplied generated nitrogen and oxygen to more than 1,500 customers in over 30 countries worldwide.

Media Contacts:
Theo Snijders
Wisse Kommunikatie
Tel: +31 26 443 1523
Air Products and Linde Expand Production at Bethlehem, Pa. With its assurance of ultra-high purity, this premium hydrogen gas product will have applications in a wide range of industries – in particular, it will improve analytical accuracy and offer lower levels of detection in laboratory applications for the environmental management, pharmaceutical and petrochemical sectors.

Gary Yates, Air Products’ European Product Manager Analytical and Laboratories, said:
“This is the purest hydrogen gas product currently available in the UK – containing less than 20 ppb of water, less than 100 ppb of oxygen and less than 10 ppb of total hydrocarbons making it perfect for analytical applications.”

BIP® technology was originally developed by Air Products in 1993 and since then has been successfully used to supply pure helium, nitrogen and argon. The technology encompasses an internal purifier and patented valve design to deliver ultra-high purity gas to the user. The main benefits of the technology include improved analytical accuracy, lower levels of detection and enhanced cost efficiency, due to extended column life and the added convenience of not having to use separate purifiers at the point of use. These benefits are now being extended to hydrogen BIP® cylinders for the first time.

For companies involved in environmental emissions control, for example, the new hydrogen BIP® cylinders can be used as a carrier gas in gas chromatography, where it is especially important that critical impurities are kept as low as possible to ensure that industrial processes stay within specified emissions limits. Where Flame Ionisation Detectors (FID) are used, the ultra-high purity hydrogen BIP® will bring further performance benefits such as reduced baseline noise and improved accuracy.

Gary Yates concluded:
“For those involved in the most critical analytical applications, it is reassuring to know that this is the purest hydrogen available, delivering improved accuracy and the lowest possible limits of detection.”

The new hydrogen BIP® gases are part of Air Products’ Experis range of specialty gases and gas handling equipment and they have been endorsed by the Research Institute of Chromatography in Belgium.
Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced the signing of a Letter of Intent with Eastman Chemical, Inc. (NYSE: EMN) to be a significant participant in a petroleum coke fed gasification project planned by Eastman in the Gulf Coast. In the project, which will be one of the first major solid-fuel gasification facilities in the Gulf Coast, Air Products will market hydrogen produced by the operation to its industry leading Gulf Coast hydrogen supply pipeline network, and construct and operate new world-class air separation units to produce over 7,000 tons per day (TPD) of oxygen, essential to the gasifier operation.

Eastman intends to locate the $1.6 billion plant in Beaumont, Texas, where the company will make low-cost intermediate chemicals such as methanol, hydrogen and ammonia. Eastman expects the regulatory permit application process to begin later this year, and construction is expected to be under way by early 2009. Construction employment is expected to peak at 1,300-1,500 workers, with permanent employment expected to be approximately 250. Eastman expects to have an equity position of as much as 50 percent and to announce a co-investor in the near future.

“We are excited to be working with Eastman on this gasification project. The scope of this project integrates our two companies’ core strengths and businesses. The combination of Eastman’s gasification and chemical industry experience and Air Products’ industrial gas and large project experience help to make the project attractive and viable,” said Alex Masetti, vice president, Tonnage Gases North America for Air Products. “The gasification project and our involvement represent a unique opportunity for Air Products to provide our world-class ASU technology, key to the operation of the gasifier, and to supply our West Gulf Coast pipeline system with hydrogen generated from petroleum coke fuel.
Air Products (NYSE:APD) has commissioned a PRISM Micro high purity nitrogen (HPN) system for Graphic Packaging at the company's facility in Mitchell, South Dakota. The new Micro HPN series plant replaces Graphic Packaging's two existing PSA (pressure swing adsorption) systems to produce 17,200 standard cubic feet per hour of high-purity nitrogen for Graphic Packaging's electron beam curing machines.

Air Products' PRISM Micro HPN series systems were specifically designed to provide users with smaller flow requirements with a fully automatic and highly competitive method for on-site high purity nitrogen production. "This state-of-the-art Micro HPN system is designed with economies in mind, with the goal of enabling our customers to save more than 30% over other methods of high purity nitrogen supply," said John Bakey, commercial manager, Generated Gases. "We believe it is an ideal solution for smaller volume users who want outstanding performance and reliability."

The Micro HPN Series uses cryogenic distillation technology to separate nitrogen from oxygen, using the surrounding air as the feed source. Gaseous nitrogen is produced at a high purity level (similar to hauled-in liquid nitrogen) in this process and supplied to the customer.

The highly skidded, modular design of the Micro HPN Series makes it simple to install and significantly reduces any disruption to plant operations. The system is completely unmanned and has the capability for local and remote operation. All PRISM systems are offered with a customer-focused, customized portfolio of services that may include ongoing operation, maintenance and ownership of the equipment.

More than 1,500 customers in over 30 countries rely on PRISM systems to generate their nitrogen and oxygen. The systems currently are at work around the world providing these gaseous products to the electronics/semiconductor, food, metals processing, packaging, chemicals and energy processing industries.

Air Products (NYSE:APD) and John Zink Company, LLC today announced the signing of a license agreement for Air Products' patented Large Scale Vortex™ (LSV) burner technology. The LSV burner technology is designed to significantly decrease nitrous oxide (NOx) air emissions and provide environmental and operational benefits in industrial combustion applications. The license agreement applies to retrofitting of existing hydrogen and syngas plants, and new and retrofitted methanol and ammonia plants. Air Products still reserves all rights to use LSV burners exclusively in new hydrogen and syngas production installations.

"We wanted to work with someone very prominent in the combustion industry," said Bob Davis, director of technology commercialization, Energy and Process Industries, at Air Products. "We've got a great technology with environmental and operational benefits, but are not in the burner business. By licensing to John Zink we can fully leverage the advantages of this technology." The LSV's competitive advantage is its ability to meet low NOx emission requirements in regulated regions. This makes the added capital investment expense of a selective catalytic reduction unit for these combustion applications unnecessary.

"We are looking forward to working with Air Products to develop this new burner technology," said Stephen Pirnat, president of John Zink Company. "The collaborative effort between Air Products and John Zink Company will provide our customers with an innovative NOx reduction solution that offers them significant economic and environmental value."

Under the license agreement, Air Products will perform the process and detail design of the LSV burner for its selected applications. John Zink Company will handle the marketing, detailed mechanical design, manufacturing, and will interface directly with customers purchasing the Air Products technology.

At the heart of this new technology are a proprietary fluidic flame stabilizer and novel mixing nozzles, which enable the primary flame to operate at ultra-lean conditions. This new flame stabilizing method requires very little fuel in the primary flame, which keeps temperatures low, thereby greatly reducing NOx emissions.

Technologie LSV, na niž má patent Air Products, je určena k výraznému snížení oxidů dusíku (NO x) ve spalinách a umožňuje uživateli dokonale přizpůsobit proces hoření potřebám tavby.

V rámci této spolupráce bude Air Products provádět detailní přizpůsobení hořáků pro jednotlivé konkrétní aplikace, John Zink Company zprostředkuje styk se zákazníky, marketink a zajistí výrobu.

„Hledali jsme bonitního partnera z oboru spalovacích technologií,“ říká ředitel pro komerční využití technologií Air Products Bob Davis, „protože v tomto oboru máme rezervy, a přitom máme co nabídnout.

New Reporting Guidelines Put Pressure On Solvent-Using Industries, Says Air Products

New environmental reporting guidelines, published by the Department of Food and Rural Affairs, will add to pressure on solvent-using industries to maximise the efficiency of emissions control systems, says Air Products.

The proposed guidelines, based on identified key performance indicators, are set out in a consultation paper and companies have been asked to respond by 19 th September 2005. The guidelines are intended to help businesses to report on their environmental impact but, if they are not widely adopted, further regulation may follow.

As one of the 25 direct key performance indicators, all emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) should now be reported by UK businesses, regardless of whether they are listed as public companies. This means more businesses will need to report on their environmental impact for the first time.

Luc Rijnbeek, Commercial Manager Environmental Cryogenics, comments:

"Many solvent-using industries in the chemicals and pharmaceuticals sectors are reviewing their existing emissions control systems - looking for ways to minimise solvent consumption and reduce emissions levels.

"These new reporting guidelines will further add to this pressure and will encourage companies to look for technologies that will enable them to meet legislative targets. Cryogenic emissions control technology is a highly efficient solution and flexible enough to operate even at low gas flow rates, below 300 Nm³/h."

Cryogenic condensation technology has been used to recover solvent emissions from process gas streams since the early 1980s and has achieved recognition for its efficiency and its suitability for major scale applications, where large volumes of solvents are used.

Since then the technology has evolved and the new generation systems operate more flexibly, even where there are very low flow rates and a relatively high solvent loading. Using these new systems it is even possible to recover the solvents from the waste gas stream in a pure form so they can be reused or resold, so enhancing their overall sustainability.

Luc Rijnbeek comments:

"Today's cryogenic emissions recovery systems are designed to meet the needs of each individual plant. For some the original cryogenic condensation technology, which was built to cope with high volumes, is the most appropriate, but where flexibility and high concentrations at low flow rates are a consideration, the new cryogenic systems will optimise efficiency."

Solvent-using industries are also preparing to meet the new emissions limits established as part of the EU Solvent Emissions Directive, which they will need to comply with fully by the end of October 2007. These industries can apply for the reduction scheme, which will enable them to reduce emissions levels over a pre-agreed extended time period, but the deadline for these applications is the end of October 2005.

It is designed to help businesses from a wide range of industry sectors to benchmark their performance in pollution prevention.

The inventory focuses on a number of specific emissions, such as chlorinated solvents, a high proportion of which are produced by industries in France and the UK. It also identifies the UK as one of the main sources of VOC emissions including benzene, hydrogen cyanide, dichloroethane and non-methane volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Diana Raine, business manager for cryogenic applications, Air Products explains:

"In the past, in the absence of comparative data, there has been a tendency for UK companies to believe that they are doing more than their counterparts in the EU to minimise air pollution.

"This inventory shows that in fact the UK could be a primary source of some emissions and closer control may be necessary to ensure we meet any future emissions reduction targets which may be imposed."

The pollution inventory is just part of an overall tightening of environmental legislation designed to minimise pollution and specifically, reduce air emissions. In response, Air Products has developed a state of the art cryogenic VOC recovery solution, called Air Products ExStream™ which is efficient, compact and highly adaptable – capable of recovering even complex VOCs at low gas flow rates, below 300 Nm³/h.

Diana Raine explains the benefits of this enhanced technology:

"As legislation tightens, forward thinking process managers need to ensure that air emissions control is prioritised and considered as part of a holistic plan for their plant's environmental management.

"Cryogenic solvent recovery systems are an ideal, long term solution for a wide range of solvent-using installations and can help to enhance sustainability too by recovering VOCs which can be reused on site."

For more information about cryogenic condensation technology, contact Air Products on 0800 3890202, visit www.airproducts.com/epm or email cryoeur@apci.com.

About Air Products
Air Products (NYSE:APD) serves customers in technology, energy, healthcare and industrial markets worldwide with a unique portfolio of products, services and solutions, providing atmospheric gases, process and specialty gases, performance materials and chemical intermediates.

Founded in 1940, Air Products has built leading positions in key growth markets such as semiconductor materials, refinery hydrogen, home healthcare services, natural gas liquefaction, and advanced coatings and adhesives. Like many manufacturers in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are used as part of some production processes.

Amid tightening environmental legislation, the company is investing in a new emissions control system, CryoCondap® ExStream™, to recover VOCs from process gas streams to near 100% efficiency. The compact system is capable of recovering even the most complex VOCs at low gas flow rates, below 300 Nm³/h. The system can also be easily adapted on site to recover different VOCs at varying freezing temperatures and concentrations.

Mark Northwood, Air Products' commercial manager, for cryogenic applications in the UK, said:

"Legislation is a key driver for solvent-using industries, to minimise air pollution and ensure they can meet tough emissions limits now and in the future. Our ExStream™ technology is capable of near zero efficiency at low gas flow rates and therefore represents an ideal solution."

While keeping up with changing legislation is important, Syngenta's decision to invest in cryogenic abatement technology reflects the company's commitment to enhancing sustainability and caring for the environment in the longer term.

Syngenta were impressed with Air Products' knowledge of working with difficult solvents and their ability to demonstrate the efficiency of the ExStream™ solution in laboratory trials at an early stage. In particular, they were impressed with the scope the solution allows for enhancing the sustainability of our processes, by allowing for solvent reuse.

This sector includes many solvent-using processes, typically operated by chemicals and pharmaceutical industry manufacturers.

While this legislative requirement to prevent air pollution and minimise solvent emissions to air is not new to most major installations, which were previously affected by PPC, the broader remit of IPPC means some smaller installations are affected for the first time.

Diana Raine, business manager for cryogenic applications at Air Products, said:

"Deadlines for IPPC permit applications affecting solvent-using industries are leading to an increase in enquiries about cryogenic solvent recovery systems, which operate to near zero emissions and comply with the toughest European emissions limits.

"However, most of these enquiries are from major installations seeking to update current abatement systems in order to stay one step ahead of tightening emissions legislation.

"We are concerned that some solvent-using industries, particularly smaller installations falling under IPPC for the first time may be taking a piecemeal approach to readiness for IPPC and may not be prioritising air pollution prevention early enough."

In addition to the roll-out of the IPPC regulations, solvent-using industries will also be aware that further specific legislation is likely to bring reductions of complex emissions including volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Diana Raine comments:

"As legislation tightens, forward thinking environmental managers need to ensure that air pollution prevention is prioritised and considered as part of a holistic plan for IPPC readiness.

"Cryogenic solvent recovery systems operate to near zero emissions and are now more compact and flexible than before, capable of operating at lower gas flow rates, below 300 Nm3/h. This makes them an ideal, long term solution for smaller installations. It can also improve the installation's sustainability, by recovering VOCs which can be reused on site."

However, one significant drawback of such systems is the need to dispose of the VOC contaminated carbon materials at designated landfill sites.

From 1st April 2004 the cost of 'active waste' disposal is rising from £11 per tonne to £15 per tonne - an increase of 36% and are expected to rise further by 2010. According to Air Products, this increase in costs, is prompting many businesses to review their emissions control systems.

Diana Raine, business manager for cryogenic applications at Air Products, said:

"This hike in Landfill tax costs represents another cost burden for the UK chemicals and pharmaceutical industries, which will impact on their competitiveness.

"In readiness, many businesses are reviewing emissions control systems and where possible are adopting more sustainable solutions, such as cryogenic systems, capable of reusing recovered solvents."

Cryogenic solvent recovery technology is suitable for use across a range of manufacturing processes and such systems are now more compact and capable of recovering even the most complex VOCs at low gas flow rates. The systems can also be adapted quickly and easily on site to allow for changes in gas flows.

However, to date, only relatively few companies have found ways of reusing recovered solvents. Diana Raine explains:

"Pharmaceuticals and chemicals businesses are often required to go into production as quickly as possible - for example, as soon as a new drug has been sponsored. At this stage little thought is given to how waste substances may be reused. However, where the reuse of recovered solvent has gone ahead some companies have been able to achieve major savings, significantly reducing their solvent consumption.

"In terms of sustainability, cryogenic solvent recovery systems are an ideal solution. Not only can manufacturers reuse the recovered solvent as part of their own processes, they can also choose to sell the recovered solvent elsewhere if they prefer. In addition, the liquid nitrogen used as part of the cryogenic freezing process can itself be recovered and reused elsewhere on site to ensure an inert process environment."

For more information about cryogenic condensation technology, contact Air Products on 0800 3890202, visit www.airproducts.com/epm or email cryoeur@airproducts.com.

The new standard high purity nitrogen assist plant was commissioned and built for Hercules, Inc.'s facility in Brunswick, Ga. to replace an existing Air Products PRISM® Nitrogen System, PSA Series, which Hercules had outgrown. The HPN Series plant, which will produce more than 50,000 standard cubic feet per hour of gaseous nitrogen product, will greatly reduce the amount of liquid nitrogen previously used by Hercules, resulting in considerable cost savings.

"Hercules is a long time Air Products customer. Our relationship with them has been built around finding solutions that will meet their growing needs and do it not just economically, but reliably and safely as well. Our HPN Series backup systems take care of all of that," said Steve Jacobs, Air Products Business Area Asset Manager. "Once Hercules' business had grown to the point where they needed to replace our original plant, they came back to us first, and together we devised a solution that was installed and running in two-thirds the amount of time that they needed it in," he added.

Gary Kooke, an Air Products Construction Specialist who worked on the Hercules project, credited the shorter installation time to the fact that the HPN Series plant is pre-fabricated and arrives on site in large pieces. Since the components come pre-mounted, field time can be reduced and start-up time accelerated, which results in additional cost savings for the customer.

The HPN Series plant at the Brunswick, Ga. location will be used by Hercules in their process for extracting rosin from pine wood, which then goes into a lot of everyday products including chewing gum, citrus beverages and household cleaners. Hercules is a global manufacturer of chemical specialties used in making a variety of products for home, office, and industrial markets. Established in 1912, Hercules is headquartered in Wilmington, Del.

Air Products (NYSE:APD) serves customers in technology, energy, healthcare and industrial markets worldwide with a unique portfolio of products, services and solutions, providing atmospheric gases, process and specialty gases, performance materials and chemical intermediates.
