Air Products to Sell Performance Materials Division of its Materials Technologies Segment to Evonik for $3.8 Billion; Intends to Spin-Off the Electronic Materials Division of its Materials Technologies Segment to Shareholders as Versum Materials

Air Products (NYSE:APD), a world-leading industrial gases company, announced that it has signed a definitive agreement today to sell the Performance Materials Division (PMD) of its Materials Technologies segment to Evonik Industries AG (EVK.DE), a world leader in specialty chemicals and materials, for $3.8 billion in cash.

The sale of PMD is expected to close before the end of 2016, and is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Under the terms of the agreement, operational facilities, supplier contracts, labs, contracts, customers, and employees and certain legal entities associated with PMD would transfer to Evonik. Evonik intends to continue to run PMD from Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Air Products also intends to spin-off its Electronic Materials Division (EMD) to shareholders as a separate public company, called Versum Materials. Air Products is on track to separate EMD by the end of September 2016 and will continue to evaluate whether debt and equity market conditions are favorable for a tax-free spin-off.

Air Products has been consistently executing against its strategic, Five-Point Plan, which includes focusing on industrial gases and taking actions on non-core businesses. In September 2015, the Company announced plans to separate Materials Technologies, which includes PMD and EMD.

“As for the balance of our Materials Technologies segment, I am also very excited about the future of EMD, which we currently intend to spin-off as a new, world-class public company named Versum Materials. Guillermo Novo will be the CEO of the new company, and I will be non-executive chairman of Versum Materials while maintaining my current roles at Air Products.

“As a result of these moves, Air Products will be in an even stronger position to take advantage of the exciting investment opportunities to grow our core Industrial Gases business,” Ghasemi said.

全球领先的工业气体公司空气产品公司 (Air Products，纽约证券交易所代码：APD)今天宣布其已与世界领先的特种化工和材料公司赢创工业集团签署了最终协议，将以38亿美元现金出售其材料技术板块下的功能材料业务。

功能材料业务的出售有望在2016年底前完成，具体时间将以监管部门批准和惯例下成交条件的达成为准。根据协议条款，功能材料业务下属的运营工厂、供应商合同、实验室、合同、客户、员工及相关的法人实体全部将转到赢创。而赢创打算继续在美国宾夕法尼亚州的阿伦敦运营该业务。

空气产品公司同时计划以名字为“Versum Materials”的独立上市公司的方式，向股东拆分其电子材料业务。该公司将继续评估债券和股票的市场条件是否对于免税分拆有利，按照目前的进度，拆分将于2016年9月底前完成。

Air Products’ New Hydrogen Reactions Lab Now Operational

Air Products’ (NYSE:APD) Hydrogen Reactions Lab, located at its corporate headquarters in Allentown, Pa., is now operational and receiving material for laboratory trials. The new lab consists of three continuous, trickle bed reactors and has the design capability to handle hydrotreatment and hydrogenation reactions at pressures up to 2000 psig. The new lab enables customers to optimize existing hydrogenation and hydrotreatment reactions or switch from batch to continuous operation.

Air Products’ Hydrogen Reactions Lab has been designed to test the hydrogenation of various feedstocks with up to three fixed-bed catalytic reactors. The company is able to evaluate for its customers the impact of feed quality, catalysts, and additional operating parameters on product quality, throughput, and process economics.

“Hydrotreatment is a growing trend in the used oil re-refining and transmix processing markets,” says Tim Lebrecht, applications engineer at Air Products. “With Group II base oil becoming the norm for re-refiners and ULSD limits on sulfur for transmix-derived diesel fuel, both areas are seeing an immediate need for polishing and sulfur reduction techniques.”

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced that its Board of Directors has approved the intention to fully separate its Materials Technologies business via a tax-free spin-off to its shareholders. The targeted completion of the Materials Technologies spin-off is before September 2016, subject to typical regulatory approvals. New Air Products Lab Will Help Oil Recyclers Optimize Hydrotreatment Processes

Air Products (NYSE:APD) is building a hydrogen lab at its corporate headquarters in Allentown, Pa., that will support the fast growing oil recycling industry. A key feature of the new lab is a hydrotreatment unit capable of performing high pressure and high temperature hydrogenation reactions. Air Products will use the new hydrogen lab, which is scheduled to be operational in the third quarter of 2015, to help oil recyclers optimize their hydrotreatment processes.

Air Products’ new hydrotreatment unit has been designed to test the hydrogenation of various feedstocks over continuous flow fixed-bed catalytic reactors. The company will use the hydrotreatment unit to evaluate for its customers the impact of feed quality, catalysts, and other operating parameters on product quality, throughput, and process economics.

“If hydrotreatment is not carried out under optimal conditions, an inferior quality of base oil is produced that has to be either reprocessed or sold at a discounted price,” said Dr. Vipul Dholakia, senior applications engineer at Air Products. “The testing capability of the new hydrogen lab, combined with our knowledge and experience as a hydrogenation reaction and gas applications leader, will enable us to help oil recyclers increase profitability by improving their product quality and processing efficiency.”

Hydrotreatment reaction is widely used to produce various products such as low sulfur fuel, high quality lubricating base oils, hydrogenated vegetable oil, and specialty chemicals used in industrial, personal care, and pharmaceutical applications. The reaction is often carried out with high pressure hydrogen gas in the presence of a custom-made catalyst that enables the reaction.

The new Air Products hydrogen lab will be used not only to improve the commercial used oil hydrotreatment process, but also to develop other applications, such as bio-fuel hydrogenation and continuous hydrogenation to replace batch hydrogenation of specialty chemicals.

Air Products and Enterprise Products Expand Relationship with Hydrogen Off-Gas Processing Agreement

Air Products (NYSE: APD), the leading global hydrogen provider, today announced a long-term agreement with Enterprise Products Operating LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Enterprise Products Partners L.P., that will increase hydrogen supply for refinery and petrochemical customers connected to Air Products’ vast Gulf Coast Connection Pipeline system. Air Products will build, own, and operate a 40 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) hydrogen production facility to process a hydrogen-rich off-gas stream from a new propane dehydrogenation (“PDH”) facility Enterprise is currently constructing in Mont Belvieu, Texas. The new PDH plant is scheduled to begin service in the third quarter of 2015.

“We are pleased to expand the long term relationship we have with Enterprise. This hydrogen source enhances our ability to meet the growing demand of our customers on our pipeline, and it helps increase the supply reliability and flexibility of our system. The established pipeline system was an asset in maximizing the value of this product since it enables us to purchase more off-gas during the life of the contract as we continue to meet our customers’ growing demand,” said Wilbur Mok, vice president – North America Tonnage Gases at Air Products. Mok pointed to a recent Gulf Coast refinery contract expansion with increased hydrogen supply of potentially up to 50 MMSCFD as one of the indications of the growing needs of the system.

Air Products has been successfully processing off-gas at Enterprise’s Mont Belvieu complex since 1994, servicing an existing facility. The new Air Products facility will use the company’s proven pressure swing adsorption technology which is already in place at numerous other locations around the world.

Overall, Air Products’ Gulf Coast hydrogen system is the world’s largest plant and pipeline network and provides over 1.2 billion standard cubic feet of hydrogen per day to refinery and petrochemicals customers. Air Products Increases U.S. Midwest Liquid CO₂ Supply with Big River Resources Deal

Air Products (NYSE: APD), one of the leading suppliers of liquid carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the United States, today announced the signing of a long-term agreement for the production of liquid CO₂ with Big River Resources Boyceville, LLC; based out of Boyceville, Wisconsin. Air Products will operate a facility to produce 250 tons per day (tpd) of liquid CO₂ at Big River Resources’ established ethanol plant in Boyceville, Wisconsin. Air Products will market food and beverage-grade liquid CO₂ from the plant, which is expected to begin production in early 2014.

“This Boyceville project with Big River strengthens our position in the Upper Midwest with both existing and new customers,” said Joe Lamack, CO₂ general manager - North America Merchant Gases at Air Products. “We are excited to be working with a company like Big River that understands supply reliability to industrial customers.”

Air Products (NYSE:APD) will celebrate the 100th installation of its Cryogenic Hydrogen Compressor (CHC) system at the 2013 NORA Annual Recycling Conference & Trade Show in Carlsbad, Calif., from November 13-16. With Air Products’ CHC system, industrial producers requiring high-pressure hydrogen for chemical, refinery, and bioenergy manufacturing can reduce operating costs, increase efficiency, and improve onstream time.

Air Products’ CHC system is built on proprietary technology that provides operating flexibility for hydrogen flow rates up to 120,000 scfh (standard cubic feet per hour) and up to pressures of 10,000 psig (pounds per square inch gauge). The two-phase flow process design can capture gas formed through normal heat leak vaporization and deploy that gas back into the process, resulting in operating savings. The unique CHC technology is also load-following, which means hydrogen production can fluctuate to closely match changing customer demand requirements. Ltd. Air Products will also further extend its existing industrial gas pipeline network to the Tembusu area from its existing pipeline network in the Sakra area on Jurong Island, Singapore, to support the growth of chemical and petrochemical customers with cost-effective and reliable industrial gas supply.

Air Products (NYSE: APD), and its subsidiary Air Products Canada Ltd., today announced plans to build, own and operate a new world-scale hydrogen production plant adjacent to Shell Canada’s Scotford facility located northeast of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The Air Products facility will produce over 150 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of hydrogen and will be connected to Air Products Canada’s existing Heartland Hydrogen Pipeline system which supplies refiners, upgraders, chemical processors and other industries in the Alberta Industrial Heartland region. The new Air Products Canada hydrogen plant is to be commissioned in the second half of 2015 pending regulatory approval.

The new Canadian plant will be built under a long term agreement for Air Products to supply Shell Scotford with hydrogen and steam. The Scotford contract represents the first award under a recently signed Enterprise Framework Agreement (EFA) between Shell and Air Products. The EFA provides a template for all future industrial gas contracts between Shell and Air Products.

“Refineries, upgraders, and other customers in the Heartland region have increasing demands for hydrogen. This new facility, which is connected to our established hydrogen pipeline system, will provide a very reliable source of hydrogen for these industries. We are pleased to be increasing our relationship with Shell, who we already supply at Scotford and other locations around the world,” said Wilbur Mok, vice president - North America Tonnage Gases at Air Products. Mok added that this follows Air Products’ well-established on-site business model of winning profitable projects by signing long-term agreements with reputable customers.

The Shell Scotford industrial location will gain an added supply reliability benefit from its connection to Air Products Canada’s 30-mile hydrogen pipeline. This pipeline is also fed by two existing hydrogen production plants in Edmonton that produce over 180 MMSCFD of hydrogen. “Our customers in the U.S. Gulf Coast have noted the benefit of being connected to a large hydrogen network pipeline system when it comes to enhanced supply reliability. We believe that model will also serve the Heartland customers well,” said Mok.

Pipelines offer a safe, robust and reliable supply of hydrogen to the refinery and petrochemical industry around the world. Globally, Air Products’ pipeline operational expertise is evidenced by its network of systems. Besides this newly announced pipeline, Air Products also has a hydrogen pipeline in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, and operates the world’s largest hydrogen pipeline network in the United States Gulf Coast, as well as pipeline systems in California in the U.S. and Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The new hydrogen facility will be built through the global hydrogen alliance between Air Products and Technip, a world leader in project management, engineering and construction. Air Products (NYSE:APD) has extended its PRISM® Hydrogen Generator product line for on-site gas production to supply requirements greater than 4,500 normal cubic meters per hour (4.1 million standard cubic feet per day). By combining the company’s proprietary reformer technology with its hydrogen pressure swing adsorption capabilities, Air Products’ PRISM Hydrogen Generators can offer the lowest cost hydrogen available in this production range. Air Products Adds North America Liquid CO2 Product Offering with EPCO Acquisition

Expanding its portfolio of industrial gases offerings in North America, Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced it has acquired EPCO Carbon Dioxide Products, Inc., a privately-held producer and marketer of liquid carbon dioxide (CO₂) headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana. The acquisition also includes Louisiana Leasing, Ltd. of Illinois, an affiliated company that owns liquid CO₂ distribution assets that are solely leased to EPCO, and immediately vaults Air Products to a position amongst the leaders in the North American liquid CO₂ market. The purchase price is not being disclosed.

“This acquisition is a good fit with our North American Merchant Gases set of core competencies. It also gives us immediate scale in a market that will allow us to capture additional sales of existing products by being able to offer an expanded product portfolio to existing and new customer accounts,” said Nelson Squires, vice president and general manager – North America Merchant Gases at Air Products. “We are pleased to be acquiring a company that demonstrated continued growth through the economic challenges of the past several years. EPCO’s geographic footprint overlaps nicely with our existing infrastructure such that we expect both cost and revenue synergy benefits.”

With this acquisition, Air Products adds liquid CO₂ to its North American offerings through EPCO’s 12 CO₂ purification and liquefaction plants located predominantly in the central portion of the United States. Liquid CO₂, which Air Products already offers in its other geographic regions around the world, is an important product in markets Air Products currently serves with other merchant industrial gases including the Food, Beverage, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Oil Field Services, and Metals Fabrication markets.

“Not only does this acquisition make Air Products a fully-integrated supplier of bulk industrial process gases, but a combined offering of liquid nitrogen and liquid CO₂ is expected to strengthen our sales of liquid nitrogen in markets we already serve. EPCO, established in 1987, had revenues of approximately $60 million in 2012 and was the largest North American independent liquid CO₂ company. Der Industriegasehersteller Air Products präsentiert auf der diesjährigen POWTECH (Nürnberg, 23.-25. April, Halle 4 Stand 423, www.powtech.de) seine neueste Mühle für die kryogene Vermahlung. Die PolarFit®-Mühle für extrem feines Vermahlen ermöglicht die Vermahlung selbst von nur schwer zerkleinerbaren Materialien wie z.B. Kunststoffen. Bei der Kaltvermahlung erfolgt die Zerkleinerung der Materialien mithilfe von Flüssigstickstoff. Die Chemie-, Pharma- und Nahrungsmittelindustrie erkennt zunehmend die Vorteile dieses Verfahrens, da der Markt immer kleinere Partikel nachfragt. Gleichzeitig steigen die Anforderungen an die Hersteller, möglichst hohe Durchsätze bei geringen Kosten zu fahren. Am Messestand können Interessenten die PolarFit®-Mühle und entsprechende Vermahlungsergebnisse begutachten. Eine Vorschau auf die Funktionsweise der Mühle bietet ein Video auf der Air Products-Webseite. Die PolarFit®-Mühle wurde für extrem feines Vermahlen von einigen Materialien bis zu einer Partikelgröße kleiner 50 Mikron entwickelt.

Feinste Vermahlung bei geringem Verbrauch
Die Kaltvermahlung kommt unter anderem bei der Produktion von Nahrungsergänzungsmitteln, Arzneimitteln, Pigmenten, Gewürzen und dem Recycling von Kunststoff zum Einsatz. Neueste Forschungsarbeiten *, in denen die Effizienz der bekanntesten Vermahlungsverfahren verglichen wird, haben gezeigt, dass kryogene Turbo-Mühlensysteme hinsichtlich Durchsatz, Energie- und Flüssigstickstoffverbrauch gegenüber traditionellen Vermahlungssystemen eine höhere Effizienz ermöglichen können. Der effiziente Einsatz von Flüssigstickstoff reduziert die Wärme während des Vermahlungsprozesses und verbessert damit die Produktqualität durch Verminderung oder vollständige Eliminierung von Wärmeschäden. Dies ermöglicht Kunden eine Maximierung der Produktion bei gleichzeitiger Minimierung der Kosten. Neben den Umweltaspekten des Recyclings profitieren Hersteller zusätzlich von geringeren Entsorgungskosten sowie geringeren Rohmaterialkosten.

Hintergründe zum Recycling schwer zu vermahlender Stoffe
Was hoch technisierte Kunststoffe wie Nylon, PVC, Polyethylen oder Polypropylen angeht, so ließen sich diese lange Zeit nur sehr schwer dem Recycling zuführen, da herkömmliche Mahlverfahren nur unzureichend einsetzbar waren.

Die Technologie der Kaltvermahlung kann genau dieses Problem beheben. Sie verwendet Flüssigstickstoff bei einer Temperatur von -196°C, um Materialien zu verspröden und freizusetzen, sodass Produktkomponenten, wie z.B. Kunststoffe, einfacher voneinander getrennt und gleichzeitig zu einem feinen Pulver vermahlen werden können. Das recycelte Material kann dann potenziell als Neumaterial verwendet werden.

Systemauswahl mit Hilfe von Testanlagen
Tests sind ein wesentlicher Aspekt von Zerkleinerungssystemen, vor allem wenn es um thermoplastische Kunststoffe oder Elastomere geht, deren Charakteristika vor allem im praktischen Einsatz erforscht werden. Air Products verfügt über Testanlagen in Europa, Asien und den USA, die Kunden bei der Auswahl des am besten geeigneten Vermahlungssystems unterstützen. Air Products befasst sich seit rund 40 Jahren mit dem Thema Kaltvermahlung, hat Komplettsysteme entwickelt und installiert und führt Partikelanalysen durch.

Air Products’ process for unreacted olefin recovery combines partial condensation with pressure swing adsorption to deliver two product streams: a recovered hydrocarbon product for recycle and subsequent polymer production, and a nitrogen stream for reuse in facility operations, such as polymer degassing and pneumatic transportation.

The Air Products technology, developed with Department of Energy (DOE) support under the Industrial Technologies program, enables nearly 100% recovery of hydrocarbons and nitrogen from the feed, creating a high-purity nitrogen product. An additional benefit, compared with competitive systems, is low maintenance cost since the adsorbent material used in the pressure swing adsorption process has a useful life compared to other system components. Suitable for new, world-scale plants or as a retrofit process to existing facilities, the technology provides a short payback period on invested capital and enables polyolefin manufacturers to avoid flaring that results in emissions of NOx, VOCs, CO, and CO2.

Samy Sablayrolles, expert français en traitement des eaux usées du Groupe, y donnera par ailleurs une conférence sur les progrès d'Air Products en matière d'oxydation avancée et d'oxydation supercritique des eaux et boues industrielles.

Air Products to Feature Volatile Organic Compounds Recovery System for the Chemical Process Industry at ChemInnovations 2012

Air Products (NYSE:APD) will highlight the environmental and operational benefits of its Cryo-Condap® nitrogen condensation system for the recovery and abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at the 2012 ChemInnovations Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans, La., from November 14-15. This proprietary cryogenic technology is one of several industrial gas solutions that Air Products will feature at this year’s show to help chemical process industry professionals reduce their risk of noncompliance, improve safety, and lower costs.

Air Products’ Cryo-Condap® system uses liquid nitrogen (LIN) to condense and freeze VOC vapors. The condensate and frozen particles are then removed from the process, leaving a clean process gas stream that can be discharged into the atmosphere. OCI Signs on to Air Products’ New Gulf Coast Connection Hydrogen Pipeline

When Air Products (NYSE: APD) dedicated its Gulf Coast Connection Pipeline (GCCP) project just weeks ago, company representatives talked about the benefits for new customers in need of reliable and flexible hydrogen supply to connect to the world’s largest hydrogen plant and pipeline supply network. Those statements were demonstrated today as Air Products announced a new long-term hydrogen supply agreement with OCI Beaumont LLC in Beaumont, Texas.

Air Products, the leading global hydrogen provider, will supply approximately 25 million standard cubic feet per day of hydrogen, effective immediately, via the GCCP and Gulf Coast hydrogen system for OCI Beaumont’s integrated methanol and ammonia plant. OCI Beaumont is a subsidiary of OCI Fertilizer (Netherlands), one of the European market leaders in the production of mineral fertilizers and the world’s largest producer of melamine.

“We had supplied OCI Beaumont with hydrogen since their start up late last year, but the new extended and increased supply contract opportunity was solidified with our Gulf Coast pipeline capabilities. Reliability and flexible supply are of the utmost importance to customers and we believe OCI Beaumont recognized the strength of our pipeline offering in making its supplier decision. We are pleased to have expanded this relationship with OCI Beamont,” said Wilbur Mok, Air Products’ vice president - North American Tonnage Gases.

Air Products’ Gulf Coast pipeline stretches 600 miles from the Houston Ship Channel in Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana. In August it began supplying over 1.2 billion cubic feet of hydrogen per day to refinery and petrochemical customers. Air Products had operated two hydrogen pipeline systems in Texas and Louisiana before joining them with the new 180-mile segment. The pipeline span is fed by over 20 Air Products hydrogen production facilities.

The pipeline is monitored by Air Products’ new Operations Service Center (OSC) and Customer Service Center (CSC) in Pasadena, Texas. Working hand-in-hand, the OSC oversees the daily production at Air Products’ plants, and the CSC works with customers and communicates with the OSC on product supply needs. The centers support most of Air Products’ North America industrial gas facilities and the new pipeline to meet customer demand and operate its industrial facilities safely and efficiently.

Globally, Air Products’ hydrogen pipeline operational expertise is evidenced by the 40 year safe operation of its network of systems. Pipelines offer a safe, robust and reliable supply of hydrogen to the refinery and petrochemical industry around the world. Air Products Acquires ASU and Integrated Liquefier in China

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced it has acquired an air separation unit (ASU) and integrated gases liquefier in Guiyang, China from Guizhou Kaiyang Chemical Co., Ltd. The ASU will produce approximately 2,000 tons per day (TPD) of gaseous oxygen and nitrogen to be supplied to Guizhou Kaiyang Chemical’s coal to ammonia facility under long-term contract. Liquid product will be sold predominantly to the region’s industries on the merchant market, with some also being sold to Guizhou Kaiyang Chemical. The Air Products owned ASU and liquefier are to be onstream in October 2012.

“This is the second contract Air Products has entered into with a subsidiary of the Yankuang Group. There are additional growth and expansion opportunities at this location for us. We look forward to strengthening the relationship with Yankuang in working with and supplying industrial gases to Guizhou Kaiyang Chemical. We are also pleased to be acquiring the liquefier for merchant supply,” said Steve Jones, Air Products’ China president. Jones, a member of the company’s Corporate Executive Committee relocated to Shanghai approximately one year ago as part of Air Products’ corporate strategy to support significant growth opportunities and accelerate the company’s development in emerging markets.

Air Products is also working with another Yankuang Group member, Shaanxi Future Energy Chemical Co., Ltd., in Yulin, Shaanxi Province. Air Products is constructing and will own and operate the largest on-site ASU order ever awarded to an industrial gas company. The facility includes multiple ASU trains and will produce 12,000 TPD of oxygen and significant tonnage volumes of nitrogen and compressed dry air for Shaanxi’s coal chemical plant starting in 2014.

Guizhou Kaiyang Chemical is jointly-owned by the Yankuang Group, a Shandong provincial state-owned enterprise and one of the four largest coal mining companies in China, and the Guizhou Kailin Group, one of China’s leading phosphate mining companies and producers of ammonia phosphate for use as a fertilizer.

Today’s announcement with Guizhou Kaiyang Chemical is the second China tonnage gases market announcement made by Air Products this month. On Sept. 4, Air Products announced it will build, own and operate an ASU and integrated gas liquefier in Hebei Province, China to supply Cangzhou Zhengyuan Fertilizer Co., Ltd. The ASU will produce approximately 2,000 TPD of gaseous oxygen for Zhengyuan’s gasifier operation as part of its fertilizer plant in Hebei, and the liquefier will produce liquid product for the region’s merchant gases market beginning in 2014.

Air Products’ ASU Technology Selected to Supply Cangzhou Zhengyuan Fertilizer

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced it has signed a long-term contract with Cangzhou Zhengyuan Fertilizer Co., Ltd. and will build, own and operate an air separation unit (ASU) and integrated gas liquefier in Hebei Province, China. The ASU will produce approximately 2,000 tons per day (TPD) of gaseous oxygen for Cangzhou Zhengyuan’s gasifier operation at its fertilizer plant in Hebei. The facility also will produce liquid product to serve the region’s growing merchant gases market. The Air Products ASU and liquefier are to be onstream in 2014.

“We are pleased to have won this contract and to be working with Cangzhou Zhengyuan. The location of this facility in Hebei Province furthers several of the objectives in our China strategy. It will site sustainable tonnage gases and merchant operations in a key region and use a proven A2000 ASU product line. Further, the liquefier provides for the integrated gases model and offering we are seeking to establish in this market,” said Steve Jones, Air Products’ China president. Jones, a member of the company’s Corporate Executive Committee relocated to Shanghai approximately one year ago as part of Air Products’ corporate strategy to support significant growth opportunities and accelerate the company’s development in emerging markets.

“Air Products’ proven technology in gases for coal-gasification along with its unparalleled operations and management expertise will help strengthen Zhengyuan’s leading position in coal-gasification, synthetic ammonia and urea industries,” said Liu Jincheng, president of Hebei Yangmei Zhengyuan Chemical Group Co. Ltd., parent of Cangzhou Zhengyuan, and chief onsite construction command of Cangzhou Zhengyuan. “The cooperation brings mutual benefits and is a win-win deal.”

The ASU train will include design enhancements to minimize operating costs through energy efficiency. Technology advancements and other productivity improvements support Air Products’ overall sustainability goals of reducing energy consumption and emissions. Air Products will also locate a liquid bulk terminal facility to support the liquefier at this site to serve merchant gas customers in the region.

Hebei Yangmei Zhengyuan Chemical Group is a manufacturer of urea and ammonia via processes that utilize coal as a feedstock and the largest producer of urea and synthetic ammonia in Hebei province. Cangzhou Zhengyuan is its wholly-owned subsidiary.

Today’s China contract award news follows Air Products’ March 2012 announcement of a long-term contract with another fertilizer producer, Xinlianxin, the largest fertilizer producer in Henan Province and the fourth largest coal based urea producer in China. Air Products’ ASU and liquefier are to be onstream at this location in 2013.

Air Products’ Charlie Page Gives North American Membrane Society Keynote Speech

The increasing global demand for energy is just one market-driver pushing the development, demand and use of membrane technology. This was just one of the messages delivered by Air Products’ (NYSE: APD) PRISM Membrane Group director of operations and technology Charlie Page in his opening session keynote speech today at the 22nd Annual North American Membrane Society (NAMS) Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“Membranes as a technology have been known for a long time, but their use as a commercial product in gas separations has only been fairly recent. Developments in polymer sciences dating back many years led to discoveries of synthetic materials mimicking natural membranes that were capable of performing interesting industrial separations,” Page told the audience.

Page delivered a retrospective synopsis of the evolution of the commercialization of membrane technology into the industrial sector in his address. With 30 years experience, he began work in this area much earlier and joined Air Products’ membrane business via a 1991 technology acquisition. Page continued as global membrane product owner before assuming commercial responsibility for Air Products’ PRISM Membranes Group in 2000 and became program director in 2008.

Page said he was honored to give the keynote address. “This type of opportunity is a real honor when you consider the long list of distinguished membrane experts who have given keynote talks in the past,” he said.

In looking both back to the past and ahead to the future of membrane technology, Page noted that Air Products has spent many years working with aerospace and transportation industries in making the transport of people and materials safer for the world. “Perhaps our most important market segment in today’s business is in aerospace, specifically OBIGGS (On Board Inert Gas Generating System). Inerting of fuel tanks for the prevention of fire and explosions has taken a long time to develop. Today, we supply membranes for both military and commercial passenger aircraft. Almost all new production aircraft are being equipped with membranes. OBIGGS will be a key market for many applications for many years requiring large numbers of high performance membranes,” Page said.

He added that it is not just planes, but also trains that Air Products has played a role with safe travel. “In fact, Air Products membranes have even provided oxygen enriched air that is used on high altitude trains in Tibet to partially offset the decreased cabin pressure and ensure passenger safety,” he said.

In looking forward, Page also noted that Air Products’ development of ceramic membranes for oxygen production, with much support from the United States Department of Energy, is a potential game changing enabler for clean energy production. “We need to keep finding new technologies that will address the pressing needs of a world with increasingly depleted resources,” he said.

With more than 500 of the large process gas systems installed, and over 100 thousand nitrogen and air dehydration membranes shipped to customers across many applications, Page said he takes great pride in the reliable and long-term stable performance these units have displayed. “By long term, we mean years, not hours or days. We are also quite proud that we have maintained a ’green’ factory with respect to our environmental impact,” he said.

Air Products is the worldwide leader in production of gas separation and purification membranes. Membrane technology is used to separate and purify gases. Membrane modules contain thousands of hollow fibers to provide high processing capacity in a compact unit. Air Products Wins Long-Term Supply Contract for Xinlianxin in Chinachina

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced it has signed a long-term contract with Henan Xinlianxin Fertilizer (Xinlianxin) and will build, own and operate an air separation unit (ASU) and integrated gas liquefier in Henan Province, China. The ASU will produce approximately 2,000 tons per day (TPD) of gaseous oxygen for Xinlianxin’s expanding fertilizer plant in Xinxiang. The liquefier will produce over 250 TPD of liquid products, namely oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, for the region’s growing merchant gases market. The Air Products ASU and liquefier are to be onstream in 2013.

“We are pleased to be supplying Xinlianxin’s tonnage industrial gas needs for its fertilizer plant expansion. Our ASU product offering of this specific size was the right solution for the customer’s needs. This is the first time Xinlianxin has contracted with a third-party to supply industrial gases, and we are honored by that trust,” said Steve Jones, Air Products’ China president. “From a merchant gases opportunity, this location meets Air Products’ strategic goals in two ways. First, the facility’s liquefier piggybacks on the ASU location to provide for integrated and efficient production of liquid gas products. The ASU train will include design enhancements to minimize operating costs through energy efficiency. Xinlianxin is the largest fertilizer producer in Henan Province and the fourth largest coal based urea producer in China. Xinlianxin is a producer of urea, methanol and compound fertilizer using coal as a feedstock. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of China XLX Fertilizer Ltd., a Singapore-registered company listed on both the Singapore Stock Exchange (stock code: B9R.SI) and the main board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (stock code: 01866.HK).

Today’s China contract award news follows Air Products’ December 2011 announcement of a long-term contract for the largest single on-site ASU ever awarded to an industrial gas company. The facility, to be built, owned and operated by Air Products for Shaanxi Future Energy Chemical Co., Ltd., will be located in Yulin, Shaanxi Province, China. It will include multiple ASU trains and produce 12,000 TPD of oxygen and significant tonnage volumes of nitrogen and compressed dry air for Shaanxi’s coal chemical plant. The Air Products ASUs are to be commercial in 2014.

The PRISM® Hydrogen Generator for cost-effective and reliable on-site generation of volumes from 2,000 scfh up to more than 10,000 scfh. Based on advanced proprietary technology, PRISM hydrogen generators are the most efficient generators on the market today, having the highest turn down and consuming the least amount of natural gas. These generators provide a consistent supply of high-purity hydrogen for a wide variety of applications not only in chemical processing, but also in metals treatment, steel, glass, photovoltaic, food, power generation and hydrogen fueling industries.
The Cryogenic Hydrogen Compressor (CHC), which is a proprietary liquid hydrogen supply system that instantly matches changing production needs, resulting in reduced operating costs and minimum downtime. Designed for industrial producers requiring high-pressure hydrogen, such as chemical and refinery manufacturers, the unique CHC technology is load-following, which means its output closely matches process demand patterns. Air Products, producteur de gaz industriels et leader reconnu en cryo-broyage, est fier d’annoncer l’ouverture en Allemagne d’un centre d’essais et de démonstration à la pointe de la technologie, équipé de son tout nouveau cryo-broyeur ultra fin PolarFit™.

Des démonstrations à échelle industrielle du procédé de cryo-broyage permettent aux visiteurs de constater de visu les bénéfices d’une telle technologie. Le site est également doté de tous les moyens d’analyses nécessaires et d’un classificateur pneumatique qui atteste de la capacité du broyeur à offrir une distribution précise des tailles de particules.

Le cryo-broyage consiste à broyer à froid des matériaux en employant de l’azote liquide. Ses atouts sont de mieux en mieux connus des industriels de la chimie, de la pharmacie et de l’agro- alimentaire chez qui l’on observe une demande croissante pour une granulométrie fine aussi bien que pour des broyeurs offrant le plus fort rendement possible pour le coût le plus bas.

Le cryo-broyeur ultra fin PolarFit™ d’Air Products installé sur le site de Bobingen permet de produire une poudre homogène de grande qualité en combinant différentes techniques de broyage telles que l’impact, l’attrition et la collision particule contre particule. Les matériaux difficiles à broyer comme les élastomères thermosplastiques, peuvent désormais l’être à des granulométries plus fines que cela n’était possible jusqu’ici avec un équipement classique. Le broyeur produit avec régularité des grains mesurant entre 45 et 250 microns (ou entre 60 et 325 US mesh), et même dans certains cas inférieurs à 10 microns. La distance rotor-stator du broyeur, facile à ajuster, offre une grande flexibilité dans le choix de la taille des particules, pour une granulométrie fine à ultra-fine. Un usage judicieux de l’azote liquide permet de contrer la chaleur engendrée par le processus de broyage et de préserver la qualité du produit en minimisant, voire supprimant les dommages thermiques. Les clients peuvent ainsi optimiser leurs taux de production tout en réduisant leurs coûts opérationnels.

L’expérience d’Air Products dans le broyage fin s’étend aussi au domaine de la classification pneumatique. La capacité à classer des matériaux cryo-broyés constitue un atout supplémentaire pour des sociétés qui cherchent à obtenir une distribution granulométrique précise pour leur produit. En offrant un système de classification pneumatique en complément de son cryo-broyeur ultra-fin PolarFit, l’utilisateur peut obtenir une meilleure distribution des tailles de particules et ainsi augmenter son rendement, sa productivité et éviter de devoir recourir à un matériel de tamisage supplémentaire.
