Air Products Fills 100th Helium ISO Container at Doe Canyon

Air Products (NYSE: APD), a global leader in helium production, recently reached a milestone at its newest helium production facility in Colorado by filling its 100th helium ISO container. Air Products’ Doe Canyon plant is the only one in the world extracting helium from a gas stream composed primarily of carbon dioxide (CO2). The helium from this facility strengthens and diversifies Air Products’ helium supply chain to further enable the reliable delivery of product for its customers around the world.

“We are very pleased with the operational performance of our Doe Canyon helium plant, which is one-of-a-kind and sets a new standard by producing helium from a naturally occurring carbon dioxide stream. We will continue to make the investments necessary to maintain the leading market position in this industry that we have established and enhanced over many decades,” said Walter Nelson, vice president and general manager – Global Helium at Air Products. “This facility could not have been achieved without the cooperation of our site host. They allowed us to move forward with this outside-the-box thinking to helium production.” The site host is Kinder Morgan CO2 Company, acting for and on behalf of the Doe Canyon Deep Unit, in its capacity as Unit Operator.

Much of the helium produced in the United States today comes from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) system. The BLM system is in decline, however, and eventually that storage supply will be depleted. At the same time, the world’s demand for helium is likely to continue to grow, requiring additional new sources of helium.

“This is not just another liquid helium plant. By using cutting-edge technology, combined with world class operations, we’re able to recover helium from CO2. It is one more step, in a series of steps, Air Products has taken to be the most reliable helium supplier in the world,” said Corning Painter, Air Products’ executive vice president - Industrial Gases.

Most of the helium produced today is a by-product of natural gas (methane) processing. However, not all natural gas fields contain helium and, in fact, very few gas fields have high enough helium concentrations to make it economical for extraction. In this case, the naturally-occurring gas is composed primarily of carbon dioxide, and it contains high enough concentrations of helium to make extraction economical. The Doe Canyon plant is expected to produce up to 230 million cubic feet of helium per year, which can replace more than 15 percent of the current BLM reserve helium supply as that system declines.

Air Products’ Colorado facility uses a new technology process to produce pure helium from the carbon dioxide stream. Air Products extracts the helium from the gas stream and returns the carbon dioxide to Kinder Morgan CO2 for its intended enhanced oil recovery (EOR) use. Kinder Morgan CO2, supplies this carbon dioxide to the Permian Basin in West Texas, where it is used for EOR.

Helium is used in many unique and valued applications including: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); lifting for high altitude scientific research balloons, blimps and party balloons; fiber optics and semiconductor manufacturing; metallurgy; breathing atmospheres for deep diving or unique blood gas medical mixtures; analytical chemistry; pressurizing and purging pipes, vessels, and other critical equipment; leak detection; and other advanced applications.

Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective March 1, 2016, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly service charges for merchant customers in North America. The pricing adjustments include increases of:

Up to 20% for liquid argon
Up to 15% for liquid and bulk hydrogen
Up to 10% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid and bulk helium, and liquid carbon dioxide

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on specific situations.

These adjustments are in response to the cost impact associated with the significant slowdown in the steel market, and increasing operational and delivery costs associated with specific regional supply and demand imbalances in order to meet customer needs. In addition to covering increases in operating expenses, Air Products continues to make significant investments aimed at improving the reliability, security, safety, and the efficiency of its operations.

Doppelsieg in Katar: Air Products errichtet Heliumanlage für RasGas und erhält langfristigen Liefervertrag

Air Products (NYSE: APD) verzeichnet zwei Erfolge im Heliumsektor, die die Marktführerschaft des Unternehmens unterstreichen: Zum einen wird Air Products die RasGas Company Ltd (RasGas) mit der Ausrüstung für eine neue Helium-3-Anlage am Standort Ras Laffan Industrial City, Katar, versorgen. Zum anderen erhält Air Products auch den Zuschlag für die langfristige Heliumversorgung aus der Helium-3-Anlage, die voraussichtlich bis zu 0,4 Bscf (Billion Standard Cubic Feet) flüssiges Helium pro Jahr produzieren wird. Mit dem Produktionsbeginn 2018 sichert sich das Unternehmen seine Position als weltweit größter kommerzieller Heliumanbieter.

Air Products dankzij nieuwe projecten in Qatar grootste leverancier van helium ter wereld

Air Products, leverancier van industriële gassen, heeft vandaag bekendgemaakt dat het bedrijf twee nieuwe, grote projecten voor de productie van helium heeft binnengehaald. Air Products zal de installaties leveren voor de nieuwe Helium 3 fabriek van RasGas Company Ltd., die gebouwd wordt op het Barzan-complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar. Daarnaast heeft Air Products het langlopende contract voor de productie en levering van de helium vanaf de nieuwe fabriek gewonnen. Naar verwachting zal de fabriek per jaar zo’n 15 miljoen liter vloeibare helium produceren. Als de productie in de nieuwe fabriek in 2018 van start gaat, wordt Air Products de grootste, commerciële leverancier van helium ter wereld.

“De twee nieuwe contracten zijn belangrijke mijlpalen voor ons bedrijf”, zei Walter Nelson, vice-president en general manager Global Helium bij Air Products. “Het contract voor de levering van de installaties voor de nieuwe fabriek is een bewijs van het vertrouwen van Rasgas in Air Products als leverancier van technologie en equipment voor de productie en processing van gas en helium. Maar net zo belangrijk is het lange termijn contract voor de levering van helium vanaf de nieuwe fabriek. Daardoor kunnen we al onze klanten de komende jaren een betrouwbare levering van helium garanderen.”

Air Products werkt al lange tijd samen met RasGas in diverse andere markten en bedrijfstakken. Ook in Qatar heeft Air Products samen met Rasgas al een aantal succesvolle projecten afgerond. Air Products leverde aan RasGas en Qatargas bijvoorbeeld al technologie voor het vloeibaar maken van aardgas, de belangrijkste installaties voor liquefactie en installaties voor het onttrekken van helium aan LNG. Ook bouwde Air Products in Ras Laffan een grote luchtscheidingsfabriek (ASU) voor Oryx GTL.

Air Products is al meer dan vijftig jaar actief in het Midden-Oosten. Het bedrijf bouwde in de vijftiger jaren de allereerste ASU in de regio en levert al meer dan 50 jaar industriële gassen aan klanten in de regio. Het hoofdkantoor voor de activiteiten in het Midden-Oosten is gevestigd in Dubai. De activiteiten in de regio zijn de laatste jaren in een stroomversnelling geraakt omdat verschillende bedrijven een beroep deden op Air Products voor de bouw van luchtscheidings- en waterstoffabrieken. In april 2015 kondigde het bedrijf aan, het grootste complex voor de productie van industriële gassen ter wereld in Jazan (Saudi-Arabië) te bouwen en te exploiteren. Air Products werkt daarbij nauw samen met de Abdullah Hashim Group en ACWA Power.

Het contract voor de levering van helium uit de nieuwe Helium 3 fabriek is een volgende stap in het proces dat Air Products recentelijk in gang heeft gezet om een betrouwbare levering van helium aan haar klanten te kunnen garanderen. Air Products heeft tijdens recente veilingen een substantiële hoeveelheid helium uit de reserves van het United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) toegewezen gekregen. Bovendien startte Air Products in augustus met de verkoop van helium, die met behulp van een eigen innovatieve technologie gewonnen wordt uit een natuurlijke bron in Colorado, die koolstofdioxide uitstoot.

Air Products heeft al veel nieuwe technologie ontwikkeld voor de winning, productie, distributie en opslag van helium, die tegenwoordig veelvuldig in de heliumindustrie gebruikt wordt. Het bedrijf exploiteert vele heliuminstallaties over de hele wereld.

Air Products Building Helium Plant for RasGas; Wins Long-Term Helium Supply Contract

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced two big helium market wins that demonstrate the company’s industry leadership. Air Products will supply to RasGas Company Ltd (RasGas), the helium licensor package equipment for the new Helium 3 plant to be located at the Barzan facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar. Additionally, Air Products won the award for the long-term helium supply from the Helium 3 plant which is expected to produce up to 0.4 Bsf/annum of liquid helium, and in achieving this, the company will again be the world’s largest commercial supplier of helium when the plant begins production in 2018.

The equipment win to build the helium plant demonstrates RasGas’ confidence in Air Products as a global supplier of high technology gas processing equipment and helium technology. Air Products has an existing relationship with RasGas in other business and markets, and a successful history of accomplishments in Qatar. Effective October 1, 2015, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly service charges for merchant customers in North America. The pricing adjustments include increases of:

Up to 20% for liquid argon and liquid carbon dioxide
Up to 15% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid and bulk hydrogen
Up to 10% for liquid and bulk helium
Up to 10% for tank monthly service charges

Air Products Holds Grand Opening at Its Doe Canyon Helium Plant

Air Products (NYSE: APD), a global leader in helium production, today held a grand opening at its new Doe Canyon helium production facility in Colorado. The Doe Canyon helium plant is the only one in the world extracting helium from a gas stream composed primarily of carbon dioxide (CO2). The helium from this new facility further diversifies Air Products’ supply chain to ensure a reliable and stable supply of product for its customers.

“Today celebrates an accomplishment that has not been achieved before. We are capturing an important molecule—that being helium—from a naturally occurring stream of carbon dioxide provided by this site’s host Kinder Morgan, who I would like to thank for their cooperation with this venture,” said Seifi Ghasemi, Air Products’ chairman, president and chief executive officer. “In doing so, our company takes another step forward to maintain the leading position we have earned in this industry and to help to ensure Air Products continues to build on the helium market leadership established and enhanced over many decades.”

Much of the helium produced in the United States today comes from the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) system, however, the BLM system is in decline, and eventually that storage supply will be depleted. At the same time, the world’s demand for helium is likely to continue to grow and is why new sources of helium are needed. The purified helium at the new Colorado facility will be liquefied on-site for subsequent delivery to Air Products’ customers. The plant is expected to produce up to 230 million standard cubic feet of helium per year, replacing more than 15 percent of the current BLM reserve helium supply as that system declines.

“People often talk about ‘thinking outside-the-box’, and that is really the case in this instance. This is not just another liquid helium plant, we’re using cutting edge technology to extract and produce helium that would have otherwise been lost. Bringing the Doe Canyon helium plant on-stream is just one more step in a series of steps that we’ve taken in order to become the most reliable supplier of helium to our customers around the world,” said Corning Painter, Air Products’ executive vice president and general manager of Industrial Gases.

Most of the helium produced around the world is a by-product of natural gas (methane) processing. However, not all natural gas fields contain helium, and in fact very few gas fields have high enough helium concentrations to make it economical for extraction. In this case, the natural gas is composed of primarily CO2, and it contains high enough concentrations of helium to make it economical for extraction.

Air Products’ Colorado facility will use a new technology process to produce pure helium from the CO2 stream. Kinder Morgan, operator of the Doe Canyon Unit, supplies this CO2 to the Permian Basin in West Texas, where the CO2 is used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Air Products will extract the helium and return the CO2 to Kinder Morgan for its intended EOR use.

Air Products and MATHESON Helium Production Begins in Wyoming

Air Products (NYSE: APD) and Matheson Tri-Gas, Inc. (MATHESON), a member of the Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (TNSC) group, today announced that production operations have begun with the filling and shipping of the first two 11,000 gallon helium ISO containers from their jointly-owned liquid helium production plant near Big Piney, Wyoming. The plant is designed to produce 200 million standard cubic feet of helium per year initially, with expectations for future expansion to 400 million standard cubic feet per year.

The Big Piney helium facility purifies and liquefies a helium feedgas stream that is supplied by Denbury Resources’ Riley Ridge gas processing plant. The Denbury plant processes a raw gas stream produced from the LaBarge Field in Wyoming, one of the largest helium-rich gas fields in the United States. The LaBarge Field is believed to contain sufficient helium reserves to support production for decades.

“This plant is beginning production operations at a good time as both suppliers and manufacturing end-users of helium are still recovering from a global helium supply shortage. Big Piney alone won’t solve the supply issue, but it will help to provide additional helium at this critical time. Going forward, the Big Piney plant will further diversify our helium source portfolio in our efforts to reliably serve our customers,” said Walter Nelson, general manager - Worldwide Helium at Air Products.

Speciální plyny Air Products dobývají vesmír

High-tech, tedy vyspělé technologie, jsou výkladní skříní každé rozvinuté ekonomiky. Výroba špičkové elektroniky, lékařských a měřících přístrojů, letecký průmysl, farmacie, to všechno jsou odvětví, která se neobejdou bez kvalifikované pracovní síly, nejmodernějšího výrobního vybavení a v neposlední řadě také bez dodávek nejlepších surovin. Mezi ně patří rovněž maximálně čisté speciální plyny.

Jejich spotřeba neustále roste – užívají se v laboratorních měřících aplikacích (plynové chromatografii, fotometrii a spektrometrii), při výrobě křemíkových elektronických součástek, při svařování hliníku a slitin v leteckém a kosmickém průmyslu, ale také pro iniciování, stabilizování nebo eliminování nejrůznějších chemických procesů nebo pro zvýšení intenzity osvětlení. Zatímco definice čistoty běžných technických plynů se udává v milióntinách obsahu (ppm - parts per million), u speciálních plynů se udává v ppb, což je hodnota jedné miliardtiny obsahu (parts per bilion). Pro lepší představu, obsah 1 ppb se přibližně rovná jedné kapce rozpuštěné v plné automobilové cisterně, kterou se rozvážejí pohonné hmoty.

Speciální plyny jsou náročné nejen na výrobu, ale především na udržení čistoty během skladování. Se snižováním tlaku v lahvích dochází k nárůstu kontaminace vlhkostí a kyslíkem. Společnost Air Products, jeden z největších světových výrobců technických plynů, přišla už před lety s převratným vynálezem. Lahve se speciálními plyny vybavuje vlastním patentovaným systémem dočišťování BIP (Built-In Purifier). Ten zajišťuje konzistentní čistotu až prakticky do úplně poslední molekuly plynu v lahvi.

Nejdříve začala společnost Air Products dodávat v lahvích vybavených systémem BIP plyny jako helium, dusík a argon, později k nim přibyl ještě kyslík. V roce 2004 získal patentovaný systém BIP ocenění britské královny (Queen’s Award for Industry). Družice pohybující se na oběžné dráze kolem Země měřila, jakým způsobem naše planeta deformuje časoprostor. K tomuto účelu byla družice vybavena čtyřmi velice přesnými gyroskopy, které se otáčely v atmosféře čistého plynného hélia. Během výběrového řízení, kterého se zúčastnili tři výrobci, pouze společnost Air Products byla schopna garantovat vysokou čistotu plynu po celou dobu experimentu, a to právě zásluhou technologie BIP.

Experiment pořádaný ve spolupráci americké kosmické agentury NASA a Stanfordské univerzity potvrdil nejen, že se Albert Einstein nijak nemýlil ve svých předpokladech týkajících se deformace časoprostoru způsobené velkými tělesy, ale rovněž dokázal, že technologii BIP patří ve světě speciálních plynů nejen relativně, ale absolutně velká budoucnost.

Air Products Signs Distributor Agreement with TechnoGas in Kuwait

Today Air Products (NYSE: APD) announced it has signed a distributor agreement with the Kuwaiti company TechnoGas.

Air Products has been offering ultrahigh-purity gases (UHP), calibration mixtures, process chemicals and equipment to customers globally for over 40 years. By signing an agreement with TechnoGas, the company now has an important distribution network in Kuwait allowing it to expand its speciality gas and equipment activities in the State.

Through the company’s tonnage business, Air Products has been doing business in the Middle East for more than 50 years, with offices in Oman, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain. A provider of liquefied natural gas (LNG) cryogenic technology to Oman and the rest of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), Air Products has built, owned, and operated several air separation units and hydrogen production plants throughout the Middle East region.

Air Products Middle East was formed in 1990 and is a 100% owned subsidiary of Air Products. It operates a helium and cylinder gas filling and distribution facility, as well as a specialty gases center in the Jebel Ali Free Zone, UAE and distributes its helium and its specialty gases to over 20 countries throughout the GCC and wider Middle Eastern region.

“This distribution agreement provides us with entry to the speciality gas and equipment market in Kuwait by working with a trusted local company in TechnoGas,” commented Simon Little, General Manager, Merchant Gases at Air Products (Middle East) FZE. “Air Products’ business also compliments TechnoGas’ existing portfolio of products perfectly.”

Gaz Analytiques Air Products Explique Pourquoi et Comment Adopter L’hydrogène Comme Gaz Porteur GC à la Place de L’hélium

Acteur mondial de premier plan sur le marché des applications analytiques, Air Products accompagne les laboratoires dans leur conversion à l’hydrogène en remplacement d’un hélium qui se raréfie. Produit ultra pur mais aussi journées techniques, documents écrits, vidéo, témoignage client…, ses experts mettent tout en œuvre pour que cette conversion bénéficie à tous, en toute sécurité.

Les stocks actuels d’hélium, gaz porteur le plus couramment utilisé en chromatographie en phase gazeuse, se tarissent. Et même si l’on estime aujourd’hui que les réserves devraient suffire pour plusieurs siècles et si Air Products comme ses confrères travaille à trouver de nouvelles sources, son approvisionnement est désormais soumis à certaines restrictions. Il convient donc de rechercher des alternatives et notamment de reconsidérer les avantages de l’hydrogène pour la chromatographie en phase gazeuse (CG).

L’hydrogène est considéré par beaucoup comme le meilleur gaz porteur pour la chromatographie en phase gazeuse, et dans certaines applications, comme un gaz porteur de premier choix grâce aux caractéristiques qui lui sont propres : analyse rapide, grande efficacité et coûts réduits.

Sa diffusivité élevée permet en effet des vitesses linéaires plus rapides et des analyses raccourcies en offrant la même efficacité de séparation que l’hélium.

En comparant les avantages techniques de l’hélium, de l’azote et de l’hydrogène, on remarque par ailleurs que l’hydrogène a la plus large gamme de débit et la meilleure résolution à des débits élevés. Il a donc la capacité de fournir une analyse plus rapide tout en améliorant la résolution par rapport aux autres gaz ce qui signifie qu’il est possible d’utiliser des volumes d’échantillons plus faibles et donc de réaliser de substantielles économies.

De nombreux utilisateurs l’ont déjà constaté, à l’instar de MATGAS. Ce leader en R&D et centre d’excellence d’Air Products, situé sur le campus universitaire UNIVERSITAT Autonoma de Barcelone (Espagne) utilise en effet désormais l’hydrogène comme gaz porteur dans ses applications de chromatographie en phase gazeuse. Selon le Dr Lourdes Vega, sa Directrice, cette conversion a permis non seulement d’améliorer les performances et la fiabilité mais aussi de réduire les coûts.

La mise en oeuvre de ce gaz nécessite cependant certaines précautions. Contrairement à l’hélium, l’hydrogène est en effet inflammable et il faut toujours garder cette caractéristique à l’esprit quand on l’utilise comme gaz porteur. Les applications GC modernes peuvent détecter des fuites au niveau de l’entrée de la colonne, en contrôlant la pression de gaz dans leurs systèmes de contrôle de pression électronique (EPC). Si une fuite d’hydrogène se produit avant d’atteindre la colonne, le système EPC détecte le problème et arrête le débit de gaz. Toutefois, lorsque la fuite se trouve en avant de la colonne (en raison d’une rupture de colonne ou d’une fuite à proximité du détecteur), cette protection est vaine. C’est pourquoi il est indispensable de disposer d’un capteur d’hydrogène intégré installé dans l’application GC pour détecter toute accumulation d’hydrogène dans le four. Ces solutions sont disponibles dans le cadre d’un réaménagement mis en œuvre par tous les grands fabricants de GC. Air Products, dont le mot d’ordre est « Safety first », est également à la disposition de ses clients pour veiller au respect des bonnes pratiques en matière de sécurité.

Des développements spécifiques :
Pour répondre à une demande croissante en hydrogène comme gaz porteur, Air Products a élargi sa technologie BIP® unique à ce gaz offrant désormais des niveaux d’impuretés beaucoup plus bas qu’avec les bouteilles ou générateurs traditionnels.

Chaque bouteille H2 BIP® contient en effet moins de 20 ppb d’eau, 100 ppb d’oxygène et 10 ppb d’hydrocarbures totaux. Nettement plus pur que toutes les qualités d’hydrogène traditionnelles, l’H2 BIP® est de ce fait particulièrement adapté aux applications de GC les plus exigeantes.

Laboranalytiker setzen in der Gaschromatografie verstärkt auf ultrahochreinen Wasserstoff als Träger- und Brennstoffgas, wie der Industriegasehersteller Air Products festgestellt hat. Während Helium das Trägergas erster Wahl bleibt – vor allem wegen seiner chemischen Reaktionsträgheit und der geringen Verunreinigungen –, wird Wasserstoff als kostengünstige und effiziente Alternative immer attraktiver.

Gary Yates, Experte für Spezialgase, erläutert die Hintergründe: „Auch wenn die weltweit bekannten Helium-Reserven voraussichtlich noch 300 Jahre ausreichen werden, suchen Branchen, die auf eine schnelle und effiziente Gasanalyse angewiesen sind, schon heute nach Alternativen. Dabei haben jüngste technologische Fortschritte dazu beigetragen, Anwendungen mit ultrahochreinem Wasserstoff zuverlässiger, effizienter und einfacher zu machen. Gas chromatographers turn to hydrogen as a viable carrier gas alternative, says Air Products

When performing gas chromatography, a growing number of laboratory analysts are turning to ultra-high purity hydrogen as a viable carrier and fuel gas for the most demanding applications, according to Air Products.

While helium remains the carrier gas of choice in most situations, primarily due to its inert properties and its low levels of impurities, hydrogen is increasingly being considered as a suitable carrier and fuel gas for some laboratory applications.

Gary Yates, specialty gas consultant at Air Products, said:

“Even though the world’s known helium reserves are expected to last for another 300 years, industries that rely on fast and efficient gas analysis to deliver reliable measurements are already looking around for alternatives.”

“Recent technological advances which have helped to make ultra-high purity hydrogen more reliable, efficient and easier to use are certainly generating interest among volume users including laboratories and pharmaceutical businesses.”

Responding to this growing interest in hydrogen, Air Products has recently compiled research to compare the performance of ultra-high purity hydrogen (with critical impurities 100 x lower than standard grade hydrogen) with helium and nitrogen when used as a carrier gas. The tests carried out reveal that ultra-high purity hydrogen performs well – delivering reliable results, with minimal base line noise and reduced analysis time.

Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective October 1, 2013, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly charges for merchant customers in North America. The pricing adjustments include increases of:

Up to 12% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, and liquid carbon dioxide.
Up to 20% for liquid argon, liquid and bulk hydrogen, and bulk carbon monoxide.
Liquid and bulk helium pricing adjustments will be determined on a contract by contract basis.

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

The revised prices are in response to various factors, including supply and demand imbalances, that are driving up production and delivery costs, and increases in operating expenses such as employee labor and benefits, natural gas and energy, and maintenance. Air Products Signs MOU with Gazprom for Russian Helium Project

Air Products (NYSE: APD), the global leader in helium production, continues to take actions to improve future helium supply reliability for its customers. Today Air Products announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Russia-based Gazprom Export LLC that confirms Air Products’ long-term plans to purchase helium from Gazprom.

Gazprom intends to start development of its major natural gas resources in Eastern Siberia and plans to implement large-scale helium production from the helium-rich gas feedstock in the Blagoveshchensk region beginning in 2018. Beyond the purchase of helium, the MOU also indicates Air Products’ interest in working with Gazprom on logistical, technical, and production facets of the overall project.

“Our focus on reliable helium supply to our customers is priority one for Air Products and working with Gazprom would further diversify our helium source portfolio. This MOU is the latest in a series of actions we have taken to better position ourselves in meeting increasing customer helium demand. We will continue to look for other helium source opportunities where we can participate as a buyer, an investor, and operator,” said John Van Sloun, general manager – Worldwide Helium at Air Products.

“Through careful planning of the extraction, transport and storage facilities for the new and ambitious East Siberian helium project, it will primarily ensure these helium technologies will capture this scarce gas for flexible supply and strategic helium storage creation. We hope that our partnership with Air Products will help Gazprom Group in developing these vast resources in terms of global growth of helium demand,” the deputy Chairman of Gazprom’s Management Committee and General Director of Gazprom Export, Alexander Medvedev said.

Van Sloun also added that Air Products’ new, jointly-owned liquid helium production plant near Big Piney, Wyoming is scheduled to be onstream in 2013. The facility will process natural gas from the Riley Ridge Field in Wyoming, one of the largest helium-rich natural gas fields in the United States. The Riley Ridge field is believed to contain sufficient helium reserves to support production for decades.

Air Products Introduces New Gas Converter Mobile App

Air Products (NYSE:APD) has developed its first public mobile app, which converts weight and volume measures for common industrial gases and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Air Products Gas Converter is available for free download from global Apple® iTunes® Stores for use on iPhone®, iPad®, and iPod® touch devices. The new app enables users to quickly convert weight and volume measures for industrial gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, argon, hydrogen, helium, and carbon dioxide, as well as LNG/methane.

“Air Products developed the new app as a value-added tool for anyone who frequently uses units of measure that differ from those used by the industrial gas industry, giving them the ability to convert from one unit of measure to another, especially weights and volumes,” said Steve Ruoff, Metals Processing industry manager at Air Products. “We wanted a convenient tool that takes advantage of the digital technology everyone is using today and can be built upon in the future.”

When converting between liquid and gaseous units, the Gas Converter accounts for the unique properties of each industrial gas, particularly molecular weight and density. For LNG, the tool converts flow rates—including Diesel Gallon Equivalents—and allows the user to specify values for a number of variables.

In the past, Air Products has provided printed weight/volume conversion charts on business cards and currently provides interactive conversion tools on the company’s website. With the addition of the Gas Converter mobile app, users can quickly and easily access the tool anytime, anywhere.

Laboratory analysts are coming under increased pressure to produce accurate data consistently and quickly, and having the right range of gas products close at hand has become essential. Accurate data is not only important in emissions-testing applications to ensure compliance with environmental legislation it can also provide managers with vital insights into the quality or efficiency of their production processes too.

Showcasing BIP® technology
Among the products being showcased at WWEM 2012, is Air Products’ patented BIP® technology – cylinders that contain gases such as helium, argon, nitrogen and hydrogen, with less than 10 ppb oxygen and less than 20 ppb moisture right to the last molecule. Gas mixtures with a 10-year shelf life
When the highest standards of accuracy are required, most analysts prefer to use calibration gas mixtures that specify uncertainties for each gas component individually and offer full traceability to national standards. Recent advances in the manufacture of these gas mixtures mean that many in Air Products’ range now come with up to a 10-year shelf life so that accurate calibration is maintained over many years without the need to buy replacement calibration mixture cylinders.

Non-refillable cylinders

Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective, October 1, 2012, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly service charges for merchant customers in North America. The pricing adjustments include increases of:

Up to 10% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid and bulk hydrogen and liquid carbon dioxide
Up to 20% for liquid argon and bulk carbon monoxide

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

The global helium supply shortfall has caused us to address each customer price change on an individual basis.

The revised prices will offset higher operating costs and increased input costs. Air Products is taking aggressive actions internally to mitigate rising costs by reinvesting to improve efficiencies and maintain reliable supply.

Air Products hosts a symposium for laboratory scientists at Birmingham's ThinkTank

Air Products is hosting a symposium for the UK's leading laboratory scientists at Birmingham's Think Tank to share the latest techniques and technologies used in gas analysis.

The event is part of a day-long conference programme on 19th June 2012 that includes a session about the safe use of gas, delivered by Gas Safe. Technology providers, Macherey Nagel and Shimadzu will also be participating.

Gas analysis is performed for a variety of reasons – everything from industrial emissions control to the manufacture of pharmaceutical drugs. The scientists attending the technical symposium will learn more about the importance of gas mixtures and their role in improving the accuracy of measurements. They will also be briefed on all aspects of gas safety.

Gary Yates, Air Products' European Product Manager Analytical and Laboratories, said:

"The world of gas analysis is becoming more challenging for everyone and stringent regulations have led to increased demand for accurate and reliable readings. The gases and equipment used to perform gas chromatography and other laboratory tests are critical to their outcome.

"Based on our extensive knowledge of gas analysis, Air Products has invested in the development of higher grade gas mixtures that come with ISO 17025 certification, and we have also taken steps to make gas selection as easy as possible."

As well as focusing on accuracy, laboratory scientists attending the session will learn how to use their analytical equipment more efficiently and where possible, increase its life. Gary Yates adds:

"Using higher grade gases can make a significant difference to process efficiency by helping to extend the life of the column inside the chromatgraph and minimising downtime. This equipment is costly to replace and using ultra-high purity gases can effectively double or even triple its life span."

Other technology providers will be participating in the day-long programme of events including Macherey Nagel and Shimadzu.

Der Industriegasehersteller Air Products erweitert sein Angebot an Spezialgasen um recyclingfähige Einwegflaschen. Auf diese praktische Versorgungsform wird vor allem im Analytikbereich zurückgegriffen. Während Einwegflaschen bisher nur zeitweise zum Angebot von Air Products gehörten, hat das Unternehmen nun beschlossen, diese Versorgungsform langfristig und umfassend anzubieten. Damit begegnet Air Products der steigenden Nachfrage für Anwendungen, bei denen es besonders auf eine einfache Handhabung und Transportabilität der Gase ankommt.

Der Einsatz von Einwegflaschen empfiehlt sich vor allem für Anwendungen, bei denen nur geringe Volumina benötigt werden und es hauptsächlich auf eine schnelle Verfügbarkeit von unterschiedlichen, standardisierten Gasmischungen ankommt. Dies gilt beispielsweise für Gaswarngeräte und andere Spezialanwendungen in Laboren. Zudem entfällt die Flaschenmiete.

Die ‚International Safety Equipment Association' empfiehlt, dass Gaswarngeräte täglich einem Funktionstest unterzogen werden sollten, um sicherzustellen, dass Sensoren und der Alarm ordnungsgemäß funktionieren. Einwegflaschen mit einem Analysezertifikat sind für diesen Zweck besonders gut geeignet, da sie jederzeit problemlos zur Verfügung stehen und zugleich die notwendige Qualität und Zuverlässigkeit sicherstellen.

Die Einwegflaschen sind aus Aluminium gefertigt und in unterschiedlichen Kapazitäten von 12 bis 100 Liter Gasvolumen verfügbar. Zudem wird jede Gasflasche mit einem Analysezertifikat ausgeliefert. Aufgrund der langjährigen Erfahrung in der Abfüllung von Flaschengasen, kann Air Products sicherstellen, dass selbst hochreaktive Gasmischungen langfristig stabil bleiben. Nicht-reaktive Gasmischungen sind zudem mit einem Chargen-Prüfzertifikat ausgestattet, um die Konsistenz der eingesetzten Gase zu gewährleisten.

Air Products Expands Supply of Non-Refillable Cylinders

Air Products is expanding its supply of disposable, non-refillable cylinders to provide a more convenient gas product for use in gas analysis.

While non-refillable gas cylinders have been available to specialty gas users for some time, Air Products has decided to expand its supply of these products in order to meet demand for applications where ease of use and portability are critical.

Switching to non-refillable cylinders for low volume applications allows gas users to avoid rental charges when using smaller volumes of gas and benefit from speedy delivery of a wide range of standardised mixtures. These mixtures have been developed specifically for use in gas detection and other specialist laboratory applications.

Gary Yates, Air Products' European Product Manager Analytical and Laboratories, said: "When it comes to gas detection in areas like personal safety and plant protection, access to stable gas mixtures at short notice is essential and laboratory analysts are demanding a high standard of service from their gas supplier.

"Backed by our pan-European supply network, Air Products is ideally placed to extend this service to specialty gas users in a variety of industry sectors."

Non-refillable gas products are available in a range of aluminium cylinder types, with capacities ranging from 12 litres up to 100 litres and they are supplied with a Certificate of Analysis. Utilising Air Products' extensive cylinder-filling expertise, all reactive mixtures are guaranteed to provide long-term stability and non-reactive mixtures are batch-certified, ensuring consistency with the source gas.

According to Gary Yates, non-refillable gas products can provide much more than just enhanced convenience, they can bring significant safety benefits too. He said:

"The International Safety Equipment Association recommends that gas detection equipment should be 'bump' tested prior to each day of use or before each confined space entry in order to check that sensors and alarms are operating properly. Stable non-refillable gas products that come with a Certificate of Analysis are ideal for this purpose."

Air Products Completes Acquisition of CryoService Limited

Air Products (NYSE:APD) today announced it has completed the acquisition of the UK company CryoService Limited, which will now be known as Air Products CryoEase® Services.

This acquisition follows an initial 25 per cent stake in CryoService that Air Products purchased in 1998 and subsequent majority shareholding the company acquired in 2008. For over a decade both businesses have operated in partnership to supply cryogenic and specialist gases to customer's in science, leisure and general industry.

"CryoService's commitment to customer service, innovation and technology operations complement Air Products' business," commented Ivo Bols, Air Products' Vice President and General Manager, Merchant Gases – Europe. Air Products (NYSE:APD) heeft bekendgemaakt, dat het de overname van het Britse bedrijf CryoService Limited heeft afgerond. Het bedrijf, dat in 1970 werd opgericht, zal verder gaan onder de naam Air Products CryoEase® Services. Air Products had in 1998 al een belang van 25 procent in het bedrijf verworven, dat in 2008 werd omgezet in een meerderheidsbelang. Samen met Air Products levert CryoService cryogene en speciale gassen aan klanten in de industrie, het wetenschappelijk onderzoek en de recreatiesector.

De vestiging van CryoService in Worcester was al uitgegroeid tot het centre of excellence van Air Products op het gebied van CryoEase® producten en diensten in Groot-Brittannië en Ierland. Air Products boucle l'acquisition de CryoService Limited

Air Products vient d'annoncer qu'il avait finalisé l'acquisition de la société britannique CryoService Limited qui portera désormais le nom d'Air Products CryoEase® Services.

Ce rachat fait suite à une première prise de participation de 25% de CryoService effectuée en 1998 par Air Products , suivie d'une prise de participation majoritaire en 2008. Depuis plus d'une décennie, les deux entités travaillent en partenariat pour approvisionner en gaz cryogéniques et gaz spéciaux leurs clients scientifiques, professionnels des loisirs ou de l'industrie générale.

« Le service client, l'innovation et la gestion technique ont toujours été prioritaires pour CryoService et sont en parfaite adéquation avec l'activité d'Air Products », a commenté Ivo Bols, Vice Président et Directeur général d'Air Products pour les Gaz marchands en Europe. « Cette acquisition démontre bien la stratégie d'Air Products : fonctionner comme un producteur de gaz industriels intégré pour optimiser croissance et rentabilité. Imaginé pour les clients qui consomment mensuellement entre 100 m3 (10 bouteilles) et 3 000 m3 d'un seul produit (azote, argon ou oxygène), ce service exclusif comprend la location d'un petit réservoir de gaz liquide sur leur site, directement connecté aux équipements de production, en service 24h sur 24, 7 j/7 et ré-approvisionnable automatiquement.

Après une étude gratuite du site et de ses applications afin de valider le choix de la solution CryoEase® et de déterminer la taille du réservoir (de 230 à 2000 litres), ce dernier est installé rapidement, sans travaux de génie civil ou branchement électrique. Il est ensuite rempli de produit liquide (azote, argon ou oxygène) par un véhicule dédié. Puis le gaz est acheminé, au choix, sous forme liquide ou gazeuse, par un réseau, directement au point d'utilisation et donc disponible de façon permanente.

Son immersion dans l'azote liquide prévient également toute perte de produit. « Anti-gaspi », la pompe des véhicules CryoEase® est aussi efficace : elle remplit un réservoir de 2000 l en moins de 20 minutes sans même nécessiter la présence du client. Le service CryoEase® supprime toute manutention et manipulation de cadres et bouteilles. Le gaz est directement connecté au point d'utilisation réduisant du même coup l'exposition aux gaz pressurisés. La suppression des connexions et déconnexions des bouteilles garantit quant à elle une absence de pollution éventuelle du réseau de distribution du gaz lors des changements d'emballages.

Le client voit sa procédure administrative allégée et ne paie que le gaz qu'il utilise puisque les pertes résiduelles inévitables avec les bouteilles ne sont plus à l'ordre du jour. Finies les zones de stockage séparées pour les bouteilles de gaz vides et les pleines : l'empreinte au sol d'un réservoir de 1000 l de produit liquide est de 1m x 1m, soit l'équivalent en capacité de 7 cadres environ (ou 70 B 50) qui occuperaient 6 m2 au sol !

CryoService ist spezialisiert auf die Gasversorgung von Unternehmen, die kleinere Volumina benötigen und über die Befüllung von Kleintanks versorgt werden. Das Versorgungsmodel verschafft Unternehmen mit entsprechendem Bedarf Kostenvorteile und verbessert die Betriebsabläufe.

Der Industriegasehersteller Air Products feiert mit einer Ausstellung das 21-jährige Bestehen seiner Forschungs- und Entwicklungseinheit, der ‚European Technology Group', an deren Hauptsitz in Basingstoke, Großbritannien. Die Ausstellung ‚Spirit of Innovation' richtet sich an Studenten, Kunden sowie an Forschungs- und Industriepartner aus ganz Europa und befasst sich mit den bedeutendsten Erfolgsgeschichten seit der Gründung der Forschungs- und Entwicklungseinheit im Jahre 1991 sowie mit deren Einfluss auf Märkte und Industrien weltweit.

Preisgekrönte Technologien
Zwei der Exponate haben zusammen mit den dazugehörigen Maxx-Gasgemischen den "Queen's Award for Innovation" in den Jahren 2004 und 2007 gewonnen. Dies ist zum einen die BIP-Technologie (BIP = built-in-purifier, integriertes Gasreinigungssystem), die allerhöchste Reinheitsgrade für anspruchsvolle Laboranwendungen sicherstellt, sowie der Integra-Zylinder, der das Gasehandling einfacher, sicherer und kostengünstiger macht und bei gleicher Gasmenge nur halb so groß ist wie ein konventioneller Zylinder. Flaschengase und -bündel kommen nahezu in allen Industrien zum Einsatz, von der Untermeeresbautechnik bis hin zu Laboranalysen und beim Schweißen.

Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt von Air Products' Innovationskraft sind kryogene Technologien, also Verfahren, die mit Hilfe von Stickstoff Kälte erzeugen und beispielsweise bei der Weiterverarbeitung von Lebensmitteln, aber auch bei Anwendungen zur Emissionsvermeidung zum Einsatz kommen.

Exponate aus allen Unternehmensbereichen
Zu den Anfang Februar ausgestellten Produkten und Exponaten gehören unter anderem:

Tunnelfroster für die Lebensmittelindustrie, die mit flüssigem Stickstoff chargenweises und zugleich lose-rollendes Frosten ermöglichen. Das kryogene Verfahren hilft bei der Erhaltung der Produktqualität, indem es den Flüssigkeitsverlust beim Frosten reduziert und damit Geschmack, Textur und Anmutung der Lebensmittel beibehält.
Technologien zur kryogenen Emissionskontrolle, mit der beispielsweise flüchtige organische Substanzen und andere Schadstoffe am Ende eines Produkt-Lebenszyklus aus Kühlschränken und Frostern gefahrlos entfernt werden können.
Der preisgekrönte Integra-Zylinder, der in Kombination mit den Maxx-Gasgemischen leichter, einfacher zu handhaben und sicherer ist, als herkömmliche Zylinder. Vor allem Schweißfachkräfte profitieren von einer erhöhten Produktivität und Effizienz sowie von einer verbesserten Qualität der Schweißnähte.
Die Freshline-Lebensmittelgase, die in Schutzgasverpackungen (MAP, modified atmosphere packaging) die Haltbarkeit von Lebensmitteln verlängern und die Qualität zahlreicher Produktgruppen zu erhalten vermögen.

Firma Air Products, największy dostawca gazów technicznych w Polsce, zorganizowała w dniach 1-3 lutego 2012 roku w siedzibie Europejskiej Grupy Technologicznej (European Technology Group) Air Products w Basingstoke w Wielkiej Brytanii wystawę prezentującą osiągnięcia ponad 20 lat działań firmy w zakresie opracowywania innowacji. Wydarzenie było okazją do podkreślenia celowości inwestycji w badania i rozwój, a także wyeksponowania współpracy wielu podmiotów przy projektach badawczych.

Gośćmi wystawy „Duch innowacji” byli studenci kierunków ścisłych, partnerzy projektów badawczo-rozwojowych z całej Europy oraz klienci Air Products. Na wystawie można było zobaczyć najważniejsze oraz nagradzane projekty opracowane przez Europejską Grupę Technologiczną Air Products. Zaprezentowano osiągnięcia ośrodka od jego otwarcia w 1991 r. do

chwili obecnej oraz ich wpływ na rozwój wielu sektorów przemysłu na świecie. Dwa prezentowane eksponaty Air Products – technologia oczyszczania gazów wysokiej czystości BIP® oraz butla Integra® wraz z towarzyszącą jej ofertą gazów spawalniczych Maxx®, uzyskały prestiżową brytyjską nagrodę Queen’s Awards for Enterprise: Innovation, odpowiednio w 2004 i 2007 roku.

Wiele opracowanych przez firmę Air Products innowacji znalazło komercyjne zastosowanie w różnych gałęziach przemysłu. Air Products repasa sus 21 años de éxitos en I+D en la exposición “Espíritu de Innovación”

Air Products organizó, entre el 1 y el 3 de febrero, una exposición para
conmemorar sus 21 años de innovación y para promover la importancia de la colaboración en
proyectos de investigación como núcleo del desarrollo de I+D. La exhibición “Espíritu de
Innovación” tuvo lugar en la sede del Grupo de Tecnología Europea, en Basingstoke.

En el evento se mostraron algunos de los productos del Grupo de Tecnología Europea de Air
Products más significativos y con más reconocimiento en materia de I+D -desde que se inaugurara la
instalación en 1991 hasta la fecha-, así como los que han tenido un mayor impacto en el mercado
global. Dos de los productos expuestos, la gama de tecnología BIP® y las botellas Integra® -con su
complementaria gama de gases Maxx®- lograron el Queen's Award for Innovation (premio de la
Reina de Inglaterra a la innovación) en 2004 y 2007, respectivamente.

En las últimas décadas, la tecnología de congelación criogénica ha encontrado numerosas
aplicaciones industriales, desde sistemas de congelación de alimentos a soluciones de control de
emisiones, así como cualquier aplicación que requiera un entorno extremadamente frío. Los túneles
de gases industriales y las botellas de gas se emplean también en todo lo relacionado con la
construcción submarina, los análisis de laboratorio y hasta las aplicaciones para soldadura.
A la inauguración de la exposición “Espíritu de Innovación” acudieron estudiantes e investigadores
de la localidad, así como numerosos clientes y socios de industriales de toda Europa.

John Marsland, Vice-presidente de Air Products y Director Mundial de Gases Comerciales, comentó:

Tecnología de control de emisiones criogénicas para recuperar compuestos orgánicos volátiles

Air Products accueille du 1er au 3 février 2012 une exposition dans les quartiers généraux de son Centre d'excellence technologique européen à Basingstoke (Grande-Bretagne) qui retrace 21 ans d'innovations. Il souligne ainsi l'importance des projets collectifs de recherche, élément clé de ses investissements en R&D.

L'exposition « Esprit d'innovation » est organisée à l'attention des étudiants en sciences de la région comme des clients et des partenaires industriels et de recherches du Groupe en Europe. Y sont mis en exergue quelques uns des succès les plus significatifs obtenus par le Centre d'excellence technologique européen depuis son ouverture en 1991, distingués par des prix, et qui ont eu un impact sur le marché mondial. Deux d'entre eux – la technologie BIP® d'Air Products et la Bouteille Integra®, avec sa gamme de gaz Maxx® - ont ainsi respectivement obtenu le Queen's Award for Innovation en 2001 et 2007.

Air Products Announces "Spirit of Innovation" Exhibition to Showcase 21 Years of R&D Success

Air Products is hosting an exhibition at its European Technology Group’s headquarters in Basingstoke to showcase 21 years of innovation and to promote the importance of collaborative research projects as a focus for R&D investment.

The ‘Spirit of Innovation’ exhibition (1–3 February 2012) will be attended by local science students as well as a host of customer, research and industry partners from across Europe. Exhibits at the event will include some of the European Technology Group’s most significant and award-winning R&D success stories to date, since the facility opened in 1991, and their impact in the global marketplace. Two of the exhibits – Air Products’ BIP® technology and the Integra® cylinder, with its complementary Maxx® gases range, have achieved Queen’s Awards for Innovation in 2004 and 2007 respectively.

In recent decades, cryogenic technology has found many varied industrial uses in everything from food freezing systems to emissions control solutions, in fact, in virtually any application that benefits from an extremely cold environment. Industrial gas cylinders and cylinder packs are used in everything from sub sea construction to laboratory analysis and welding applications.

Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective, October 1, 2011, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly service charges for merchant customers in North America. The pricing adjustments include increases of:

– 5 to 10% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid argon, liquid and bulk hydrogen; and;

– 3 to 5% for monthly service charges.

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

The revised prices will offset higher operating costs and increased input costs. Air Products is taking aggressive actions internally to mitigate rising costs by reinvesting to improve efficiencies and maintain reliable supply.

Air Products’ India Joint Venture Investing in Three New Merchant Gases Plants; Building a Fourth Plant for Long-Term Supply to Saint Gobain Glass

Air Products (NYSE: APD)today announced that INOX Air Products Ltd., its joint venture (JV) in India, will construct three air separation units (ASU) and liquefiers for the merchant market and also will build a fourth plant for long-term industrial gas supply to Saint Gobain Glass India. The four facilities are scheduled to come on stream during 2012.

“We are the market leader in merchant industrial gases in India, and these new plants are part of our strategy to continue to provide efficient and reliable product to support the strong growth in India. The anticipated manufacturing growth is more than seven percent annually over the next five years, and the demand for industrial gases has been steadily increasing,” said Pavan K. Jain, managing director of INOX Air Products. “The investments strengthen INOX Air Products’ existing substantial presence throughout India and reinforce our supply positions which we have achieved through our strong customer focus.”

INOX Air Products will build the ASU and liquefier merchant plants to produce liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, and liquid argon in the states of Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Puducherry. All three locations have a strong manufacturing base, and these cost-effective facilities are strategically located close to the principal markets that they serve.

INOX Air Products will also build an ASU and liquefier for the merchant market and signed a long-term supply contract for nitrogen and hydrogen with Saint Gobain Glass India (SGGI). The production plants, to be located at SGGI’s facility in the state of Rajasthan, will supply nitrogen from the ASU by pipeline and hydrogen from a steam methane reformer (SMR) plant designed to meet the specific requirements of the customer. The SMR is a product offering from Air Products’ PRISM® gas generation portfolio.

“A customer-focused approach was essential in gaining our business. Reliable supply is very important to our project, and we believe INOX Air Products’ industrial gas expertise will deliver on our industrial gas needs,” said Mr. S.N. Eisenhower, director–Operations at Saint Gobain Glass India.

In adding these four new facilities, INOX Air Products’ market presence in India continues to grow. Earlier this year, the company announced a long-term contract with POSCO Maharashtra Steel Private Limited (PMSPL) to supply on-site nitrogen and hydrogen gases to its new facility in Vile Bhagad, Maharashtra, in western India. PMSPL is a subsidiary of POSCO, the world’s fourth largest steel producer by output. The nitrogen plant and the SMR are both product offerings from Air Products’ PRISM® gas generation portfolio. The plants are expected to come on stream in late 2011.

Air Products’ PRISM line of gas generation systems supply nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen to more than 1,500 customers in over 30 countries worldwide. Air Products and MATHESON Break Ground for New Wyoming Helium Plant

Air Products (NYSE: APD) and MATHESON, a member of the Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (TNSC) group, today announced that on-site construction has commenced on a new, jointly-owned liquid helium production plant near Big Piney, Wyoming. The plant, designed to produce 200 million standard cubic feet per year at start-up, with expectations for future expansion to 400 million standard cubic feet per year, would process crude helium produced by a natural gas processing facility that would be operated by Cimarex Energy Co.

The Cimarex facility, which is currently under construction, will process natural gas from the Riley Ridge Field in Wyoming, one of the largest helium-rich natural gas fields in the United States. The Riley Ridge field is believed to contain sufficient helium reserves to support production for decades. Production at the new Wyoming plant is anticipated to commence in 2011.

Air Products, the global leader in helium production, has pioneered many of the helium extraction, production, distribution and storage technologies used in the industry today. Air Products maintains the world’s largest helium production and distribution system and operates numerous facilities around the world.

Upon completion, the Wyoming helium production plant will be the 10th liquid helium plant operating in the United States, and the first new U.S. facility constructed in over a decade. It is expected to employ 8-10 people after start-up.

Air Products Announces North American Price Increase for Liquid and Bulk Industrial Gas Products

Effective October 1, 2010, or as contracts permit, Air Products (NYSE: APD) will increase product pricing and monthly service charges for merchant customers in North America as follows:

4-8% for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid argon, liquid and bulk hydrogen;
5-10% for liquid and bulk helium; and
3-5% for monthly service charges.

Some price adjustments may be outside of these ranges based on other specific situations.

The revised prices will offset higher operating costs and increased input costs. We are taking aggressive actions internally to mitigate rising costs by reinvesting to improve efficiencies and maintain reliable supply.

Helium is severely impacted by the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) cost increase for crude helium announced last month.

Air Products to Build New ASU at Granite City, Illinois

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced the signing of a new long-term oxygen and nitrogen supply agreement, and that it will build a new air separation unit (ASU) and refurbish its existing ASU and liquefier at its facility in Granite City, Illinois. The new facility, planned to be onstream in the second quarter of 2012, will provide additional capacity for meeting both on-site customer demand for gases and merchant liquid products in the region.

“Air Products has been producing industrial gases at Granite City since the 1950s. This new investment will expand our capability to serve current customers and provide significant modernization of our operations there. It represents another step in our commitment to existing customers in that area, and strengthens Air Products’ ability to supply merchant liquid products to customers in the Midwest market,” said Wilbur Mok, vice president–Tonnage Gases North America for Air Products.

The new 500-ton-per-day ASU, planned to be onstream in 2012, in combination with the existing, refurbished ASU and liquefier, will add capability to serve both the on-site customer and the merchant market. Total argon capacity for the site will also increase as a result of this project.

Gasmengsels van Air Products voortaan twee keer zo lang houdbaar

Air Products, leverancier van gassen en chemicaliën voor diverse markten, heeft bekendgemaakt dat veel van zijn kalibratiemengsels voor gebruik bij analytische toepassingen voortaan twee keer zo lang houdbaar zijn. Daarmee gaat de houdbaarheid van vijf naar tien jaar. Air Products heeft met deze ontwikkeling een nieuwe norm gezet voor de Europese gasindustrie.

De verdubbeling in houdbaarheid is te danken aan de technologische ontwikkelingen op het gebied van productie en cilinderbehandeling. De voordelen spreken voor zich: langere houdbaarheid biedt extra zekerheid aan de vele gebruikers van de gassen, waartoe onder andere de farmaceutische, chemische en petrochemische industrie behoren, en laboratoria en klanten op het gebied van milieubeheer.

Veel van de gasmengsels van Air Products bevatten meer dan 100 componenten, waaronder argon, helium, kooldioxide, zuurstof, edelgassen en vele (gehalogeneerde) koolwaterstoffen. Ze worden geleverd met een analysecertificaat van Air Products, en tien jaar garantie.

Gary Yates, Air Products European Product Manager voor de analytische markt, vertelt: "Dit is een doorbraak voor de gassenindustrie. Bedrijven die heel specifieke gasmengsels gebruiken bij kalibratie of andere vormen van kwaliteitscontrole kunnen ervan op aan dat het mengsel een tiental jaren in stabiele staat blijft. Die betrouwbaarheid koesteren we."

Voorheen werd de stabiliteit van gasmengsels voor een periode van maximaal vijf jaar gegarandeerd, afhankelijk van de gebruikte componenten en hun concentratie.

Yates vervolgt: "Het is van belang dat gasmengsels niet langer worden gebruikt dan aangegeven. De kwaliteit van mengsels gaat nu eenmaal achteruit na verloop van tijd. Dat zou kunnen resulteren in onnauwkeurige kalibratie, waarop tijdrovende en kostbare herbewerking volgt. Dankzij de lange houdbaarheidsgarantie van Air Products is dubbel werk niet nodig."

Yates geeft aan dat de langere houdbaarheid met name van pas komt als bedrijven een klein volume gas verwachten te gebruiken. Hij legt uit: "Bij kalibratie van analytische toepassingen wordt maar een klein beetje gas gebruikt. Een langere houdbaarheid is daarom met name interessant voor kleine gebruikers die niet vaak kalibraties verrichten. Maar het is natuurlijk ook voor gebruikers van grotere volumes heel prettig om te weten dat hun kalibratiemengsels aanzienlijk langer goed blijven."

AIR PRODUCTS DOUBLE LA DUREE DE CONSERVATION DES MELANGES GAZEUX

Ses recherches sur les process de production des gaz et de traitement de ses bouteilles ont permis à Air Products d’établir une nouvelle norme pour l’industrie gazière européenne : le Groupe a fait passer de 5 à 10 ans la durée de conservation de nombreux mélanges gazeux à vocation analytique. Premiers bénéficiaires de cette avancée technologique majeure : les laboratoires d’analyse et de contrôle Qualité (industrie pharmaceutique, chimique et pétrochimique, contrôle environnemental) utilisant des mélanges de gaz très variés mais en petite quantité pour chaque calibration ou effectuant des analyses peu fréquentes

Jusqu’à maintenant, la stabilité des mélanges de gaz était garantie pour une période maximale de 5 ans en fonction de la nature et de la concentration de leurs composants. Mais Air Products est dorénavant en mesure d’offrir à ses clients un certificat d’analyse avec une garantie de 10 ans pour un grand nombre de mélanges gazeux de plus de 100 composants (dont l’argon, l’hélium, le dioxyde de carbone, l’oxygène, des gaz rares et de nombreux hydrocarbures et gaz halogénés).

Selon Gary Yates - Product Manager pour le marché analytique chez Air Products -« Ceci constitue une réelle percée pour l’industrie gazière. Les sociétés utilisant des mélanges de gaz très spécifiques pour la calibration ou des applications de contrôle Qualité savent en effet maintenant qu’elles peuvent utiliser leurs mélanges en toute sérénité jusqu’à 10 ans après leur achat, sans jamais douter de leur stabilité. » Il ajoute : « Il est important de ne pas employer les mélanges gazeux au-delà de leur date limite de stockage car tous finissent par se détériorer dans le temps. Ne pas respecter cette date revient à s’exposer à un manque de précision des calibrations. Il faut alors procéder à une seconde analyse de contrôle, ce qui constitue une perte de temps comme d’argent. La garantie de 10 ans d’Air Products élimine ce risque de devoir s’y reprendre à deux fois ».

Toujours selon Gary, « Cette prolongation du temps de stockage est particulièrement intéressante pour les sociétés appelées à ne consommer que de petits volumes. Cependant, tous les analystes gagneront en sérénité en achetant des mélanges de calibration qui demeurent stables pendant une période beaucoup plus longue ».
